Truly something special. I've read the play many times, though never seen it, and it was one of the most moving experiences I can remember. For a first preview of a show that reportedly was almost a staged reading, it was astonishing and absolutely fully realized. If Ellen Barkin doesn't win the Tony, I'll eat my hat.
Really, really not to be missed.
"Why, I make more money than... than... than Calvin Coolidge! PUT TOGETHER!" ~Lina Lamont
Is the script available anywhere? If it is, is it worth it to read it? I would love to see this, but I don't see myself being able to get to the city while this is running.
Just need to echo everyone's praise for this performance. There was pure electricity in the theater after Barkin gave her big monologue in triumphant fashion. I'm surprised they didn't stop the play and give her the Tony right then and there. She was perfect in every aspect. Her voice, her incredible body movements, all of it. She could never get comfortable in her chair and it spilled over to the whole performance.
My tears began during Bruce's monologue about Albert and I couldn't regain my composure for the rest of the night. I don't know if I have ever been more of a wreck for a sustained period of time at the theater or a movie.
There are no words for Joe Mantello. Bring on your best hyperbole and it won't be enough. If you thought he was good at the benefit you didn't see anything. I want to go back and stagedoor to tell him how much his performance meant to me.
Let's not forget the ever amazing John Benjamin Hickey. His scene work with Mantello is so effortless. It really is something rare and special to watch.
The play...good god this play! It was the right time to finally bring it to Broadway. It's interesting to see how much has changed and at the same time how much is still the same. The topics of gay politics and how the gay community organizes to fight for rights couldn't be more compelling to me. There is still so much in-fighting, so much struggle to find a cohesive identity and strategy to move forward. I see the conversations on stage happening in our lives today.
I've been unhappy with a lot of the shows this spring, so it was nice to end the season on such a wonderful high. Congrats, bravo and many thanks to everyone at The Golden tonight!
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.
Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!
ummmm....WOW incredible, amazing...everything that has beensaid is 100 percent true. I don't know that anyone has mentioned Jim Parsens...who was also incredible.. MUST SEE
Both were wonderful especially Jim Parsons. He got some of the best audience reaction all night. Lee Pace's second act monologue was when I started to lose it-he was great.
If there is a God in heaven, this will extend through Labor Day. That's the first opportunity I'll have to be back in NYC. I am so hoping and praying that this will extend!
Ok,I'm only in NYC for only 3 days. Should I ditch or try to resale my People in the Picture tix in order to see The Normal Heart? This sounds great, but I've never seen Donna Murphy live and love her from Passion and Sondheim B-day Concert dvds.
I'm also seeing BOM, Priscilla, La Cage and Anything Goes. PITP is the only one I'm not totally excited about and I don't want to kick myself for missing what you all are describing as must see theater. I've been intrigued since reading the cast list and I've never read or seen Normal Heart.
Wonder if there will be a same day rush for this right after offical opening? Any clue?
breath, that is a hard call. I saw "People in the Picture" because I wanted to see Donna Murphy live also. "People in the Picture", in my opinion, was not great. Donna was fine though. You may walk out wishing you had seen "The Normal Heart" but at least you could say you saw her live. I didn't give up another show to see her but when i walked out I thought "Well, I saw Donna Murphy live onstage. Hopefully the next time it will be in a better show".
You have the rest of your life to see Donna live. You also only have three months to see a production that will be talked about for the rest of your life. Updated On: 4/20/11 at 12:53 PM
