"Granted, saying "Thanks to the cast and crew" covers multitudes, but to me, it's special when specifics are called."
It's also more considerate of the theatre and television audience, none of whom knows or cares about the long lists of names being hurled out them at breakneck speed.
Or better yet, why not just say a simple "thank you" and walk off the stage? They did just that in the old days, and it worked just fine. And boy, would it ever speed things along!
I think people want to hear more than a simple thank you but I don't think it is necessary to remember almost every name associated with the show in the speech.
Because it's their moment to bask. Let 'em thank whomever the hell they want. I LOVE the speeches.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
While it's not a laundry list, this is much more than a simple on-"thank you"-and off acceptance speech. 1960
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)
I have one, and only one complaint about what was an otherwise extraordinary show - if someone had to come out and stomp on NPH's cell phone, WHY WAS IT NOT LUPONE?

I thought I heard an n-bomb!!! I don't think that's what he said though. Argh, part of the reason Lin-Manuel comes off as a hack is because he's too chicken**** to write legit rap lyrics.
And all his raps apparently have the same structure and tricks.
I thought it was a very good ceremony as a whole- clipped along very well. A lot of the comedic bits fell flat, as they are wont to do. But none of the show performances were memorable, in my opinion- every single one was swallowed up by the space.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
Exactly they all have the structure and intonation. It's not a style it's all derivative. AND he uses hacky words like Pinocchio!
Despite CBS's horrible audio you can make out "bigger", the n-word doesn't fit in that lyric structure, he isn't rhyming anything with bigger.
It may have been funny if he had been rhyming bigger, trigger, etc and then when Tyson came out did the Mel Brooks style "uh--igger."
If Lin Manuel used the N-word in a "rap" I would be surprised. Again his rap is homogenized as white bread and mayonnaise. TMZ has the unbleeped video.
Gratuitous slap at Les Miserables totally unnecessary considering most of the actors were stage performers and most of the people in the audience would have sold their souls to be in the film. Then there is the small matter that it takes talent to be able to to do 20 takes in a row of the same song live compared to singing it once a night.
"I thought all the performances came off really great with the glaring exception of PHANTOM, which now looks and sounds so dated (oy to those silent film star gestures!),like it came from another century altogether. Oh, wait...it did."
I wasn't to thrilled with Christine sounding like a Disney princess, but Phantom is a classic and beyond iconic. It doesn't feels dated, it feels elegant and timeless, qualities that most of last night's nominated shows lack. It also just became the first show in Broadway history to run for 25 years, so it would've been very disrespectful not to feauture a tribute.
I'm also surprised Diane Paulus didn't mentioned Bob Fosse in her speech. He is as much of a creator as Stephen is.
ljay-I watched the show today and that was true. They showed the dog licking Neil's face, but they couldn't go any further. My guess for that reasoning is the time difference. Like that originally aired at night, don't remember the specific time. But, The View is on in the morning.
I also think maybe that's why all the children heavy shows were early in the show. It was probably to get children interested in those shows.

I thought this was one of the best Tony’s in years. Very entertained and felt like the telecast was much more focused on catering to Broadway fans as opposed to the general public, which was a nice change. As much as the Broadway characters announcing the performers was a little awkward at times, I prefer that Broadway actors get to be showcased as opposed to movie stars doing the presenting.
The opening number was truly astounding (just the mere fact of coordinating that many people!) and the applause after ignited that feeling of the excitement you can only get from live performances – a great way to start off the night!
Thrilled about the two women directors! Wonderful and, from what I hear, both so well deserved!
The cancelled shows number was hilarious. Probably my favorite moment of the night. Very well done!
Didn’t agree with many of the winners, but not surprised by many. Happy that “Woolf” was not forgotten, as many feared it would be. And, I loved the multiple shout-outs to the Chicago theatre community.
Very glad that “Vanya…” was recognized, although I wish some of its actors had received the Tony as well (namely, Kristine Nielsen…her monologue was truly one of the most moving and extraordinary moments I have seen in the theatre – I will never forget it. Cicely Tyson’s speech was a highlight for me, though, and I am sure she deserves it as well!). And, I loved the David Hyde Pierce cell phone stomping bit – I love that, if you have seen “Vanya,” it’s just all that much funnier.
Congrats to Cyndi for making history winning best score. I simply wish it was not this score that made that momentous mark in Tony history. I, personally, don’t think this score represents the talent of woman composers very well.
Jane Lynch blew me away. Glad she was able to show off her talent. I am sure she exceeding many expectations last night (I know she did mine and I am a Jane fan!).
I was disappointed by “A Christmas Story” – the tapping was fantastic, but, having not heard or seen anything from the show, I had higher expectations based off of what I had heard. The song was a bit cringe-worthy for me.
I enjoy NPH as host, but I am on the Jesse Tyler Ferguson as host bandwagon for next year!
I just rewatched a few of the performances from last night. In all honesty, I find Kinky Boots to be the most bland of the evening. The song was monotonous and I was underwhelmed by the aggressively touted 'conveyor belt choreo'. I haven't seen it yet but I have to wonder who would want to after such a mediocre, elementary performance.
Like I said, I really do think that the issue with most of the ensemble performances (PIPPIN and KINKY BOOTS, in particular) were that they were terribly filmed, which is why they didn't pop like they should have (and probably did, live). They cameras were all over the place, with too many cuts and close-ups.
