Spring Awakening for Choreography? Please!! That isn't dancing. That's touching yourself and it's stupid. Also, I know I shouldn't care because the show is quite horrible, but I can't help but feel about the Pirate Queen People who were completely snubbed. Sucks to be you guys.
mmm... Mary Poppins and Laura Bell Bundy... Sounds like the "fifth wheel" nomination... you know? that "we-already-have-more-than enough-to-choose-from-thank-you-so-we-are-nominating-something/someone-who-doesn't-have-a-shot-in-hell" thing?
I'm not especially shocked Kristin Chenoweth wasn't nominated. Nominating Bundy instead definitely is an intentional snub... I guess they think that you have to put in some time on Broadway if you want to be taken into account, no matter how good you are. The hit and run performances are not good enough anymore to get a Tony nom when you have actresses who stay in the same part for 15 months... no matter how bad they are.
I guess she'll finally get her Tony when she's old enough to pull an Angela Lansbury and come back FROM tv TO Broadway.
I find it quite ironic that the show is nominated for Best Revival when almost every critic said it was not that great and that Chenoweth was the only reason to see it. Guess they had to throw a bone to Roundabout for the effort.
so... anyone else thinks it's a lock for Audra now that Kristin's out of the way? I so wish they'd recognize Debra Monk's talent, even if I have not seen her in Curtains and I really can't tell if the part's any good but I have always had a soft spot for her and I'm sure Audra will get other shots to the Big One.
"What book of rules says that theatre exists only within some ugly buildings crowded into one square-mile of New York City? Wherever there's magic and make-believe and an audience, there's theatre..."
Congratulations to Raúl, Doyle and the cast of Company. I'm really upset to see that they only got those three, though -- I was pulling for at least two more somewhere between lighting, orchestrations and featured actress.
1. How can MARY POPPINS and Bundy's nomination be the fifth-wheel nominations when there are enough ladies to nominate these categories two times over? Bundy was a strong contendor from day 1. And how doesn't MARY POPPINS have a chance of winning? If you ask me, it has a GREAT chance. ($$$)
2. You have no idea why they didn't nominate Kristin Chenoweth. Don't presume to give that a reason when you have NO idea.
3. Every critic said that THE APPLE TREE was nothing spectacular (other than Chenoweth), but the reason that it got the nomination was because there aren't that many musical revivals. What are you talking about? LES MIS was rightfully snubbed.
4. McDonald is great, but the Tony is Ebersole's.
5. You are odd.

Best Choreography - Bill T. Jones, SPRING AWAKENING: This man deserves to win for his choreography that pushes the boundaries of anything Broadway has ever seen before. This is not cookie cutter choreography, people. This is the essence of innovation, and most importantly, his work here fits these characters in this particular show to a T and assists in guiding the story in such a powerful way.
Best Featured Actor in a Play - Ethan Hawke, Anthony Chisholm and John Earl Jelks all deserve their nominations for creating strong characters and committing to them from beginning to end. Crudup was expected, and his nomination is deserved as well. I'm also thrilled for Sands. I only wish Boyd Gaines would have been placed into this category, which is really where his character belongs, and that Hugh Dancy, "the" lead actor in JOURNEY'S END, would have received a nomination in the lead category instead for his startling performance.
Some notable snubs:
*Susan Lynch, TRANSLATIONS - Best Featured Actress in a Play *Lily Rabe, HEARTBREAK HOUSE - Best Featured Actress in a Play *Laila Robins, HEARTBREAK HOUSE - Best Featured Actress in a Play
I would have left out Jennifer Ehle and inserted one of the above ladies.
*TALK RADIO and INHERIT THE WIND over HEARTBREAK HOUSE for Best Revival of a Play.

"Yeah, I second that about the SA Choreography. Second, If you know ANYTHING about dance you know how INNOVATIVE it was. Suck it."
HHAHAHA!! That was HIGHlarious, cghoward!
The "dancing" in SA is RIDICULOUS and it made me laugh out loud. That was NOT dance at all. I am a dancer and have studied modern for years and that wasn't "modern" either.
If you don't think Spring Awakening's choreography is "modern", then you surely haven't been exposed to enough of it. There are far weirder things out there than this choreography.
Am I the only one that is irked that Grey Gardens and Spring Awakening got 21 total nominations? I think they only deserve 10 combined! Seems like Featured Actress in a Musical is the toughest category.
Dean: Can I tell you something?
Lorraine: That depends on what it is.
Dean: I think you're really really pretty.
Lorraine: (after a pause) Ok, you can tell me that.
I find it quite ironic that the show is nominated for Best Revival when almost every critic said it was not that great and that Chenoweth was the only reason to see it. Guess they had to throw a bone to Roundabout for the effort.
THE APPLE TREE's nomination for Best Revival was more of a way to give a kick in the balls to Cameron Mackintosh for greedily bringing back LES MISERABLES after only three years than as a nod to a wonderful revival of THE APPLE TREE.
And it is a huge snub for Kristin. If her new series were on CBS, I might think she'd still go, but if were her, I'd skip the ceremony.
It's not even an issue of her having a right to "skip" the ceremony. As of right now, Chenoweth isn't even invited. You don't automatically get a ticket to the Tonys for having acted in a show that season. You're only guaranteed an invitation if you're a nominee, which she is not.

Are you really <>this dumb?
Chenoweth hasn't put in her time on Broadway? That certainly is a laughable accusation. And as far as your distinction of them snubbing "hit and run performances"... Apple Tree was a limited engagement for the Roundabout you nitwit!

I would bet a million bucks that the nominaters liked Legally Blonde, but were afraid if it was nominated for best musical, it would win, and they didn't want that, so they snubbed it. Mary Poppins got lucky, because now with the tony nod it will probably run for ten years.
We need Rosie to host now. She pretty much does whatever she wants, so that is the one chance for Legally Blonde to perform.
I said that I have STUDIED modern along with many other dance disciplines. I never said I was a modern dancer. I am sorry but I don't consider what I saw to be dance at all..It was just a bunch of rubbing, walking and weird head rolls. It didn't fit the story or move it along in any way. It was just there to be weird. Everyone around me was snickering. It just didn't make any sense.
As I just said, I would never consider myself to be a modern dancer but I have studied the discipline and have seen and performed some wonderful pieces but have never performed anything as bizarre and simplistic as SA's choreography. I guess I just have not be exposed enough to modern dance.
Sorry for pissing some people off. It wasn't my intention, guys.
I also hope hope hope they open the ceremony like they did in 2005, with clips from all the shows, and a little snippet from the nominated shows, so we get to see more performing and less gabbing! That was a great opening!
We already have six shows performing at the ceremony, not to mention all of the extra Hugh Jackman-Aretha Franklin type numbers that take up an hour of the show on their own. LEGALLY BLONDE will not be performing at The Tony Awards this year.

"We already have six shows performing at the ceremony"
Why six and not seven? Is someone not performing?
Regarding Modern Dance. people tend to put the word modern in the title of certain things so they can pass crap off as art. Seriously, a toilet seat is not art, Philip Glass is totally awful, and walking around the stage in patterns is not choreography, it is marching band!
However I am very pleased to see Angela Lansbury and Dana Ivey up there. I would have liked to see John McMartin just because that man deserves so much and unfortunately he has been nominated consistently in years when other roles were just flashier and more "award-grabbing."
BSoBW2: I punched Sondheim in the face after I saw Wicked and said, "Why couldn't you write like that!?"
I am also very surprised that there is no Costume Nomination for The Pirate Queen. I am rooting for that show, even if it doesn't look very good, because I like Stephanie J. Block.
Here's who I want to win (not what I think WILL happen)
Best Play: The Little Dog Laughed Best Musical: Grey Gardens Best Book: Curtains Best Original Score: Curtains Best Play Revival: I Don't Care Best Musical Revival: Company Best Special Theatrical Event:: Jay Johnson Leading Actor in a Play: Frank Langella Leading Actress in a Play: Julie White Leading Actor in a Musical: Raul Esparza Leading Actress in a Musical: Christine Ebersole Featured Actor in a Play: I Don't Care Featured Actress in a Play: Jan Maxwell Featured Actor in a Musical: Brooks Ashmanskas Featured Actress in a Musical: Orfeh Scenic Design for Musical: Mary Poppins Costume Design for Musical: Grey Gardens Lighting Design for Musical: Spring Awakening Direction of a Musical: John Doyle Best Choreography: Jerry Mitchell Best Orchestrations: Grey Gardens Just give all the tech awards for plays to Coast of Utopia
LuPonatic, my bad. Seven performances. Even more of a reason why no one will be throwing LEGALLY BLONDE a bone to perform this year.
