Oh, I know there is no chance for Legally Blonde to perform, I just wish the Tony Awards could be like five hours long and ALL the shows from each year did a performance. I would watch!

Damn! I really thought Barbara Walsh deserved a nomination. Oh well...

I guess I made it up in my head that there were supporting actor/actress categories then...?

While I'm surprised by several nominations (LBB, Mary Poppins, etc), I am just plain angry that Erin Davie didn't get it. And that Charlotte got it in place of her.

I didn't care for Erin Davie. I think most of why Grey Gardens doesn't work for me is the book, but part of the fault lies with her. I just don't buy that her character ages to become Ebersole in Act Two, whereas I entirely believed the Big Edie transformation from Act One to Act Two.

Mary Poppins? Laura Bell Bundy?
CHRISTIAN BORLE but no Aaron Lazar?
My mind cannot wrap around these nominations. They be smoking something over there.

Everyday i like SA less and less.

I mean, Denzel Washington? Gun to my head..of course.

Annak- Have you seen "Grey Gardens"? Christine Ebersole is a SUREWIN ! Her performance is one of the best this year !! alongside with Audra MacDonald.

I am very happy with all nominees in New Musical, New Play, Play Revival & New Play... category, though I wish that Pirate Queen should have at least pick up 1-2 noms with Costume Design & Scenic.

I think Bill T. Jones' nomination for Spring Awakening is certainly earned. It's fresh, it's innovative, it's beautiful.

Choreography doesn't have to include step-dancing, or three pirouettes, or the grapevine.
The choreography serves the show extremely well.

I think Groff certainly deserved a nomination, though a win is a long shot. He's a great actor, and plays the part well. I think the part is a bit dull, but he does a GREAT job with it.

I am most excited for Gallagher, though. I think he deserves, and just might win the Tony. I thought he was spectacular.

Wow, I feel like a Spring Awakening junkie. I didn't like it THAT much.

Interesting that Audra and Angela could break the record together for most performer Tonys.

But I think we all know that Audra has at LEAST 2 more Tonys to win, even if she wins this won.

Personally, I think I have too much bloom.

What I like about the SA choreography is that it ISN'T pretty. But SA isn't a pretty show.

To the comment about "putting your time in on Broadway":

110 in the Shade is also a limited engagement, like the Apple Tree, so your "logic" falls short.

Was Les Mis not eligible this season?

I believe Les Miz was eligible, but its presence on Broadway is an absurdity (for many people - I personally have no real opinion either way)given the mere three years since the last production. The fact that it is more a reproduction rather than a re-vision probably worked against it, as well. While many talented actors are or were involved with this "revival," I suspect the consensus is that Les Miz has had its time where accolades are concerned.

It's not a matter of LES MIS having had it's "time", I think it has more to do with the fact that none of the performances were anything to write home about, paired with the fact that there were better musical revivals this year.

d'Amboise has been a Broadway hoofer for years and years, and this is her first opportunity in a very long time to originate a role in a production, so I feel that her nomination is more of a hats off to her commitment to Broadway theatre over the years than a recognition of a particularly notable performance.

I think D'amboise deserves it the least out of every nom. She was god awful in Chorus Line. Why not Kristin? Where she at? Yay for the Spring boys, but I don't think either will win. Legally Blonde nominated for so many things but not best musical-doesn't make sense to me. If a show is nominated for book, music, choreo, and leading actress...why not? I haven't seen it yet, but it is the logic of the situation what confuses me.

D'Amboise hasn't originated anything. The powers that be tried to paste McKechnie's choreography on her and hung her out to dry instead of adjusting it. She looks like a flailing chicken. And let's not talk about her singing. A more comfortable key might help. She was great as Roxie because Roxie doesn't have to be great. But this doesn't work.

raphael06 I have to agree with you. Spring Awakening has some really innovative stuff happening, but as a show? Did people really find it that engaging? There were so many random tangents, adolescent poetry class lyrics, awkward book lines, and cheesy direction moments (inspirational spirit rising from his grave after shooting himself in the mouth a few scenes earlier?, what was Lauren Pritchard's character? why the Dark I Know Well scene? the obligatory hopeful chorus finale) that it felt like an amateurish experience for me. Albeit an amateur production with an intriguing score, some crazy lights, and aspiring young talents - but Tonys? I couldn't take it that seriously.

Exactly! I am no SPRING AWAKENING hater by any means. Collectively, as a whole piece, I really enjoyed it. But I think when you break it up into individual actors, technical aspects, etc, not a single one is fantastically overwhelming or stands out.

The "inspirational spirit rising" you talk of is not a cheesy direction moment, it's taken from the original play written in 1891. So were those "random tangents," "The Dark I Know Well," Lauren Pritchard's character, all written in because the play had them. It's just the nature of the material. I've never once heard someone call the material amateurish. Hmmm...

Actr, I agree with your points regarding Erin Davie. She's probably one of the reasons why I didn't get the so-called "brilliance" of Grey Gardens.

But when you musicalize something you have to take liberties so things "flow" if you will. I'm sure those tangents made sense in a complete play text. But there wasn't much more description here besides: oh I got problems too, my Dad rapes me sometimes, oh really? so does mine! sing it girls! Suddenly what I thought was about adults withholding crucial sexual education from the youth to "protect" them, got contradicted by a father who has sex with his daughter - it seemed all the sudden to imply all adults were terrible people at this time in Germany. I don't know, just my thoughts.

I agree as well on Erin Davie's performance being the retractor in making GREY GARDENS work as a whole. Only, I don't blame Davie personally. I think Michael Greif is to blame for not going to work on that character after the criticism it received in the Off-Broadway mounting for not believably transitioning to Ebersole's Little Edie in Act II. All he did was re-cast the role with an actress that looked more physically like Ebersole. But he didn't do any of the dirty work.

No, there really isn't much more context in the play. Which is why I think they decided to leave it that way for the musical. Which is why I never thought Spring Awakening would turn into a mainstream musical. I always thought it would be more for the people who like more artsy theatre. It's definitely not a traditional show. Actually, if anything, I think the play is more abstract, especially with the character of the Masked Gentleman who comes in at the end out of the blue and tells Melchior not to kill himself. So in fact, they have taken a huge liberty, for that character is one of the things that defined Spring Awakening.

sorry to kind of beat a dead horse, but i really doubt Kristin will perform for THE APPLE TREE
the show is closed, she was snubbed, and THE APPLE TREE is not a big contender to win the best revival award, so why should they perform?

anyways, about Kristin being snubbed, i mean, she was tremendous, i absolutely LOVED her in APPLE TREE, she was so cute, funny, and is truly legendary in my book.
BUT, i think the Leading Actress nominees played out very well, with 4 divas, and 1 up and coming diva, so...works for me that Kristin wasnt nominated :)
