sorry if this is going to upset people, but if Sutton gets to Broadway and overacts like she did in the first act of LITTLE WOMEN during previews, then I seriously doubt she will be win best actress (This is going by what I saw in the second preview they had). I heard she has gotten better, and I hope so, but like I said, in my opinion she shouldn't win (even though I haven't seen the others that will be competing against her). Maureen McGovern though, as I have said before, was BRILLIANT!!!

You're right about the billing PJ...I think I looked at the 'Night Mother and Little Women Marquees on the same day on Playbill online and meshed the two together.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will be eligible for New Musical. It is not a revival.

Being the title character doesn't necessarily make one the LEAD character.

Brooklyn comes off as an ensemble piece to me. I don't think there is any lead actor in the show. Eden has one big song early in the show, but never really has her own number again and doesn't really shine as the lead of the show. Ramona emerges as something closer to a star in this show, in my opinion. I don't think any of them would be nominated for lead. But it's up to the producers.

P.S. It's wayyyyyy too early to make such predictions. It's very possible we haven't even HEARD of the hit of the season yet.

In November 1995, the main competitors for Best Musical were considered to be BIG, VICTOR VICTORIA, and STATE FAIR. No one had even HEARD of RENT or BRING IN DA NOISE. Come Spring 1996, RENT took the top prize and BIG, V/V, and SF weren't even nominated!

In other words, there could be some show that could sneak up out of nowhere land on Broadway in late April and take all the awards. We can't assume we know the contenders. Furthermore, we can't assume all of these musicals we THINK are going to get to Broadway are actually going to get to Broadway. Sometimes shows put up their marquis, go out of town, and talk the talk about Broadway, but never actually walk the walk.

P.P.S. Why is no one mentioning THE FROGS? It will be up for revival, I'm sure and Nathan Lane, Roger Bart, and others could likely be nominated. Updated On: 11/25/04 at 09:34 PM

I read in one of Ken M's columns that Frogs would probably qualify for New Musical.

edenespinosalover ~ being Brooklyn in Brooklyn does not make you immediately eligible to be considered for Best Lead Actor/Actress. Thats like saying the Fiddler in Fiddler on the Roof is eligible for Best Actor/Actress simply because he/she is the Fiddler in Fiddler on the Roof. Rocky in Rocky Horror is hardly the lead role. Oliver is not the lead role in Oliver!...the leads are Fagin and Nancy. And are the Frogs in the Frogs all eligible for Best Actor/Actress? Hardly.
Being the title character has nothing to do with eligibility for Lead Actor/Actress. In fact it doesnt guarantee even eligibility in Featured Actor/Actress.

Spider- I must disagree with what you say about Sutton. I thought she was absolutely brilliant. I saw Little Women three times and each time I loved it(and her) more than the last. I think that her "overacting" was Sutton's take on Jo's character, who is prone to over-exaggeration and has huge dramatic flair. I must admit that I may not be the best judge of a person's acting, but I went two separate times with people who are very knowledgeable in the theatre department, and they also thought she was brilliant. (Please do not take this as a personal attack on you. Just my opinion.re: Tony nominees- who do you think will be nominated? ) But I do think that Maureen was also brilliant. I love her voice!
So....my votes:
Leading Actress: Sutton Foster
Featured Actress: Maureen McGovern

jonartdesigns. again, you are wrong. What about Miss Saigon? Les Msierables? Cats? Phantom of the Opera? These shows all opene din London before they came to Broadway. And when they arrived they weren't moved to Broadway like Chorus Line or Rent. It was a new production of it. Chitty has been considered for Best Musical.

Musical- Little Women, Spamalot, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, All Shook Up and/or MAYBE Brooklyn.

Actress- Sutton, (if shes considered a lead) Eden and thats all i can think of off the top of my head

RE edenespinosalover's comment earlier in this post: Just because Eden's name is the title of the show doesnt mean shes a lead. Look at GYPSY. The character of Gypsy Rose Lee is considered a supporting role...relax before you start freaking out cause someone says that Eden might not be considered a lead. The Tonys are in the summer...its NOVEMBER!

Ramona Keller is the best thing about "Brooklyn" and should be the first one considered from that show.

At least she played the closest thing to a real character.

Gov. Slaton -

You asked about Reckless. It's new to Broadway, but not new to New York. It was produced off-Broadway in 1983 and 1988, and has since been seen in regional theatres around the country, and in its terrible 1995 movie version. It would seem to fall into the Tony "classic" rule now, a la Assassins or Little Shop of Horrors.

I strongly doubt that Eden Espinoza or BROOKLYN will be nominated for Actress OR musical - there are too many new musicals opening this year, and even if they're just mediocre, I'm certain that BROOKLYN will not make the cut - that's my prediction.

I can't make any predictions about what exact actors and actresses will be nominated, but I would almost bet money on the fact that DRACULA will fail to gain a single nomination. The characters and actors certainly aren't developed or memorable enough to merit a nomination. If they are nominated, I think it would be either for Lighting or Costumes. Possibly the score, only because CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG isn't eligible for this category which leaves another open space, but I wouldn't count on that either. I have a feeling DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS will win best musical this year - just a hunch.

It's funny, Munkustrap. You and others here have a single-minded, monomaniacal pursuit of Dracula as being an epic horror of the musical stage. Whatever its problems, and there ARE many, I'd give it points for being extremely interesting to look at. That's more than I can say for some of the Broadway musical atrocities of the 70s and 80s that I witnessed.
