Actually the 40th Academy Awards were postponed several days due to the Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King 4 days before.

I don't think that any other situation has actually occurred the day of/night before. So he's technically right. The other postponed events had time to cancel.

Is it feasible to postpone? I get that they should but any other award postponement (9/11, Reagan shooting) had an advance. Has there ever been a day of postponing? I think it's the respectful thing to do but how do you deal with things like the SA cast, etc who are already in town? Another Kickstarter? It's a sticky situation."
I think the cast of Spring Awakening will be okay.
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
The awards should stay on. We can't give in to terrorism. They should have a moment of silence, and then go on with the show. We can find joy through sorrow.
I was honestly just going to write that the awards should go on, but the opening needs to be tossed and Audra should come out and sing You'll Never Walk Alone or something like that.
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.
Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!
I have no idea WHAT the opening is, but they've already rehearsed it twice.
I would hope they start with their decication/moment of silence and then go to "the plan".
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Can you imagine if the Hamilton number is My Shot and if they decide to change it now with so little time......sure Lin will make the right choice tonight..
People commenting on similar cases are forgetting the Latin Grammy Awards, which were supposed to be held in LA (and broadcast by CBS) on the very same day as the 9/11 attacks in 2001. I remember because I was very excited about it at the time and, as a kid, was very let down that it was cancelled. They eventually presented the awards at a press conference event almost 2 months later.
Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
Today on Oak's Instagram, the cast is wearing white which suggests they'll be performing either "Alexander Hamilton" or "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story?"
I, for one, would like for them to still perform their usual sassy / irreverent opening. People need to be cheered up in situations like this. Have pregnant Audra perform an inspirational ballad later in the evening.
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
It seems gun control isn't the only issue... Like Donald Trump, things as terrible as this massacre pull us away from the bubbles we live in and remind us how ****ed up we are and how long the way we still need to go is.
However, to say that we need to put theater aside so we can brace ourselves for the horrible reality is to take theater too lightly. Theater is not just an escape or an easy way to temporarily get in another bubble, but instead the imagination of what the world can and should be and a reminder that actions must be taken. We have Hamilton, which disseminates the hope to new immigrants and countless school kids that whatever color your skin is, you can achieve something great as long as you are (young), scrappy and hungry. We have Spring Awakening, which, despite Davenport's stunt, shows the world that no one deserves to be forgotten regardless of their physical difficulties, because they are also goddamn talented. We also have Shuffle Along, The Color Purple, Waitress... The show must go on, for the whole nation and the world need to see what we can and should be.
All sass and crass should be cut. We can still be entertained and cheered up without it; to perform something sassy would come off as completely tone deaf to what happened less than 24 hours earlier. The awards can be fun and respectful in tone.

Are you sure that's Tony related as opposed to the clothes they wear at today's matinee? 3 hours ahead of time is early to be in costume but I don't think they are doing the opening again or the closing, neither makes sense.
The Tony Awards are dedicating the entire performance to all affected in this horrible tragedy. Tons of actors and actresses on social media have already said they are dedicated their performances to them as well.
This isn't quite the same situation, but I remember that the Grammys a few years ago were the day after Whitney Houston's death, and Bruno Mars was supposed to be the opener, but they changed it to Bruce Springsteen out of respect. Maybe the Tonys will do something similar.
