What a 'Wicked' Surprise! Jon M. Chu Scores Upset Win as Best Director at Critics Choice Awards
At last night's Critics Choice Awards, actor/presenter Orlando Bloom noted that the last 7 winners for Best Director at the Critics Choice Awards has gone on to win the Oscar for Best Director. Well, Jon M. Chu broke that streak. Even though ''Wicked'' garnered 10 Oscar nominations and been up for Best Picture at various awards, he's largely been overlooked for Best Director, not just by the Academy, but the Golden Globes, BAFTA and the Directors Guild of America. However, the Critics Choice DID nominate him in a field of 8, which included Oscar nominees Jacques Audiard, Sean Baker & Brady Corbet.
Chu graciously and gratefully accepted his prize, but started off by joking about his Academy snub: ''I'm gonna win that Oscar!'' He called America ''the greatest place where dreams can come true,'' rejoicing in his love of storytelling and growing up in his family's Chinese restaurant in Los Gatos, Calif.
And ''Wicked'' won two other Critics Choice prizes for Costumes (Paul Tazewell) and Production Design (Nathan Crowley, Lee Sandales).
In a recent feature in The New York Times, Universal's theme park chief Mark Woodbury revealed that the film will be serving as the inspiration for secret "significant attractions" that may come to the company's theme parks in the future.

Cynthia and Ariana are doing the opening musical number on Sunday’s Oscars. WICKED medley, of course.

I'm really surprised they aren't doing For Good over the In Memoriam. Then again, there's always next year.
I have just watched Wicked again and it seems even better watching it a 2nd time.
There's 2 little things that I was wondering about. First, during "The Wizard and I" there is an effigy of Jeff Goldblum's face in the rocks and also pictures of him in her children's book. How come that when they meet the wizard later on they are surprised that he is a man and didn't know what he would look like?
Also, why did Elphaba ask Madam Morrible to give Glinda the wand? In the scene before, "Dancing through life", Elphaba is really annoyed about Glinda pulling this trick on Nessa. When Nessa tells Elphaba that she has been asked to the ball by Boq, "Please, try to understand", Elphaba sings "I do". I see this as "I understand exactly what is going on, Glinda is a b*tch, but I don't want to burst your bubble". During the later part of the song Elphaba goes to Glinda to confront her. And then Glinda cuts her off. She does give her the hat in a split second but that can't be all for the complete turnaround a moment later? The scene ends with Elphaba still not looking happy and being cut off when asking about the situation with her sister.
