What a 'Wicked' Surprise! Jon M. Chu Scores Upset Win as Best Director at Critics Choice Awards

At last night's Critics Choice Awards, actor/presenter Orlando Bloom noted that the last 7 winners for Best Director at the Critics Choice Awards has gone on to win the Oscar for Best Director. Well, Jon M. Chu broke that streak. Even though ''Wicked'' garnered 10 Oscar nominations and been up for Best Picture at various awards, he's largely been overlooked for Best Director, not just by the Academy, but the Golden Globes, BAFTA and the Directors Guild of America. However, the Critics Choice DID nominate him in a field of 8, which included Oscar nominees Jacques Audiard, Sean Baker & Brady Corbet.

Chu graciously and gratefully accepted his prize, but started off by joking about his Academy snub: ''I'm gonna win that Oscar!'' He called America ''the greatest place where dreams can come true,'' rejoicing in his love of storytelling and growing up in his family's Chinese restaurant in Los Gatos, Calif.

And ''Wicked'' won two other Critics Choice prizes for Costumes (Paul Tazewell) and Production Design (Nathan Crowley, Lee Sandales).

In a recent feature in The New York Times, Universal's theme park chief Mark Woodbury revealed that the film will be serving as the inspiration for secret "significant attractions" that may come to the company's theme parks in the future.

I'm really surprised they aren't doing For Good over the In Memoriam. Then again, there's always next year.

I have just watched Wicked again and it seems even better watching it a 2nd time.

There's 2 little things that I was wondering about. First, during "The Wizard and I" there is an effigy of Jeff Goldblum's face in the rocks and also pictures of him in her children's book. How come that when they meet the wizard later on they are surprised that he is a man and didn't know what he would look like?

Also, why did Elphaba ask Madam Morrible to give Glinda the wand? In the scene before, "Dancing through life", Elphaba is really annoyed about Glinda pulling this trick on Nessa. When Nessa tells Elphaba that she has been asked to the ball by Boq, "Please, try to understand", Elphaba sings "I do". I see this as "I understand exactly what is going on, Glinda is a b*tch, but I don't want to burst your bubble". During the later part of the song Elphaba goes to Glinda to confront her. And then Glinda cuts her off. She does give her the hat in a split second but that can't be all for the complete turnaround a moment later? The scene ends with Elphaba still not looking happy and being cut off when asking about the situation with her sister.

My understanding is that it’s more or less implied by the propaganda show that the Wizard has ascended to godhood in a sense, transcending his physical being. They’ve dropped the conceit that “no one has ever seen the Wizard” and made him into a hybrid deity, tech mogul and Big Brother. I’ll admit, it does make the big giant head make less sense, but by making the man himself into a myth, they’ve created their own mystery, even knowing it began with a man.

Higher quality poster image without the watermark. Reportedly, the trailer will be shown at Cinemacon this week (although that does not necessarily guarantee it will be released publicly)

I still really hate the subtitle. And it doesn't even make sense - why would the first movie be called "Part I" if the second movie isn't called "Part II"?

Description of the trailer via THR:

It opens with cracking windows around Glinda in the Emerald City. "Elphaba, I know you're here...Just come out before the monkeys spot you," says Ariana Grande. "This is between us, the wizard and I," says Cynthia Erivo. Prince Fiyero leads a squadron that is searching for Elphaba. Elphaba writes "Our Wizard Lies" in the sky with her broomstick. An angry mob with pitchforks comes.

The song "For Good" plays - "I've heard it said, that people come into our lives, for a reason," Ariana Grande sings. "Who can say if I've been changed for the better," Elphaba and Glinda harmonize together. We see an overhead shot of Dorothy walking the yellow brick road with the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion.

"Because I knew you...I have been changed for good," the pair sing together. "I'm off to see the wizard," says Cynthia Erivo. She flies through the sky followed by flying monkeys - cut to the title

There seems to be a big W between them. I wonder what that stands for...?

Obviously teasing the long-awaited big screen treatment of “Wonderful.”

I cannot believe I just sat through those 300 trailers of guns/fire/chases for no Wicked For Good 😩

That’s a bummer! I got stuck babysitting my nieces and nephews later than anticipated so I missed the showcase today and planned to attend it on Thursday…. Glad to find out now instead of attending the showcase to be disappointed by it not being shown.

Wasn’t there a blurb promoting this “screening” that specifically called out FOR GOOD as being included in the lineup? I could’ve sworn I saw that.

Hopefully we'll get a teaser trailer for this soon. It will be pretty interesting considering that Kiss of the Spider Woman will come out in October and then we're getting Wicked: For Good the next month. It's neat that we're getting big movie musicals so close to each other.

I'm guessing that it'll debut in front of the live action How to Train Your Dragon (another Universal release produced by Marc Platt) in June.

I wonder if they won’t premiere the trailer at the Tonys, considering Erivo is hosting.

I had the same thought yesterday. I mean, regardless, we will definitely get a trailer then - whether it’s the first or not, who knows?
