TBFL said: "Splitting the film in 2 is purely for money making reasons, but as people have mentioned, it's also a huge risk because people might not come back for part 2, if the first one isn't any good.

There isn't a huge amount of difference from the stage to screen version. There are a few bits of back story, such as the film starting at Kiamo Ko in a flashback. Some scenes are added to fill in gaps, such as Elphaba, Glinda and Fiyero travelling from Shiz to Oz, on a huge Orient Express type train. Fiyero is now part of One Short Day, There are dance breaks added in places (there are some amazing scenes in the Govs. Mansion!) , some new teachers at the school to expand the animals storyline and of course the two new songs in part 2, 1 each for Glinda and Elphaba. Info about the songs are in the spoilers, along with the Idina and Kristin cameis.

There's no major new storylines that I recall. As Long As Your Mine is shot in a massive birds nest type set, high up in the trees. The sets are spectacular and the details in the sets and costumes are insane.

I am looking forward to seeing the film, when they have the cast and crew screenings before it's released in November, though some lucky folks will likely see test screenings before that.

Well that was quite a newsy post.  Thank you!  Are you part of the cast or the crew?

I'm most curious about Part 2, which I think will have much more fleshing-out to do to make it a compelling film.

Also, the below-the-line team is quite notable per IMDB (which isn't always accurate) ---

Costume Designer - Paul Tazewell (Tony winner for Hamilton)
Production Designer - Nathan Crowley (6x Oscar nominee - Dark Knight, Interstellar, Wonka, etc)
Art Director - Gavin Fitch (Wonka, Ready Player One, M:I Dead Reckoning)
Cinematographer - Alice Brooks (In the Heights, Tick Tick Boom)
It looks like ILM and OPSIS are working on the VFX

Do we know the official Screenplay credit on the shooting script? Wikipedia and IMDB have Holtzman and Schwartz listed as screenwriters, but that might not be true.

Honestly the first time I started to actually care about this movie was seeing the creative team and the first leaked images of the sets. Regardless of whether the movie is good or not - it won't be for a lack of effort and talent.

This kind of makes no sense to me. If the movie is being split into two parts, I suspect they will be at least 2 hours, or more. The stage show runs 2 hours and 45 minutes with the intermission. So it seems there is at least 90 minutes or more time to fill with the story. If I remember correctly, I read that more of the book is incorporated into the movie. We also know that there are characters in the movie that are not in the show.  Just my thoughts.

I wasnt in on those days, unfortunately, but i can tell you that those bricks were the flimsiest paper mache bricks ever made. Look out for them in the Wizards workshop scenes too. There are also some amazing gadgets in those scenes, and the' Wizards Head', that is operated by the wizard behind the curtain, is a nassive wooden sculpture, at lease 12ft tall and it's very creepy!

Dorothy is in the film, but no more than she is in the stage show. It's not a speaking role.

The goal in dividing the film into two parts was, as TBFL notes rooted in the additional musical material Schwartz wrote for what is now part two. The films are going to more or less follow the structure of the stage show, with Defying Gravity being the finale of the first film. The goal was not to go back to the original book, which is wildly different in tone, though some small aspects included in the book have been brought in as backstory, additional characters, etc.  They are not bloating the run time of the stage show exponentially for film. It will just be presented in two parts. with what is normally act 2 being 10-15 minutes longer than what is on stage.

So...huh? The second film is an hour and fifteen minutes...?

Do they still try to shoehorn Fiyero being the Scarecrow, which has never made sense to the character's trajectory in the Wizard of Oz?

I would be shocked if they changed that.  Part of what makes the show so much fun for audiences is seeing how all the pieces ultimately fall into place for the Wizard of Oz story.  Also, does it make any less sense with respect to the Wizard of Oz than the other plot elements?  If you take Wicked at face value when watching the Wizard of Oz, then you basically have to accept that every character in the Wizard of Oz is majorly gaslighting Dorothy (pretending to not know each other, lying about their intentions, ignoring shared history, etc.).

The films havent been edited or screened. I don't know how long either part will ultimately be (and add 8 minutes to each part, for what will be a long final credits sequence), but script wise, each part orrelate to being a film well under two hours.  This hasn't been turned into Dune or Lord of the Rings, unless they decide to extend copious lanscape shots or slow the  pacing in the face of criticisms that the films could very likely have been relaseased as a single 3 hour 15 minute movie.

Yes, those make little sense. But with Fiyero it's the most egregious! As if, turning into the Scarecrow, he would assist this little girl down the yellow brick road to get himself a brain and her a ride home from an evil man he already knows to be a humbug! When rescued by Dorothy he would immediately hightail it to Winkie country to be with Elphaba.m! It makes no character sense within the confines of the Wicked plot, let alone juxtaposed against the original story!

Yes, people delighted in these character origin stories so much that they ignored plot sense. And maybe they can do that on stage in a musical, but I don't see how that gross inconsistency can survive a screen interpretation!

Then I hope the screenplay has found a much more organic reason why Fiyero would be compelled to do this...

Glad to hear the runtimes for the movies won’t be bloated. I hope that’s true. Few films earn the right to be longer than 90 minutes, in my opinion.

I agree it’s silly when compared to the 1939 film. On one hand what it takes a throwaway line from Elphaba in the book where she’s driven half mad with anxiety that she actually believes Fiyero is disguised as the scarecrow coming to be with her. She never finds out what actually happened to Fiyero.

How I choose to see it is that the Oz in Wicked and the Oz in the Wizard of Oz are similar but completely different. It’s almost like Wizard of Oz is the propaganda version of the story where everything is made to be all happy-clappy whether as Wicked is the actual story of what really happened.

One of the biggest differences between Wicked and Wizard of Oz is the Ruby Slippers are actually silver like they are in the book, which also further proves my point that the two worlds are similar but not the same.

I like what the previous poster said about how the beloved characters are all gaslighting Dorothy as that’s another similar call back to the book. Dorothy didn’t trust the trio, at one point she sleeps with her hands between her legs because she’s afraid they’ll rape her. It’s suggested that Uncle Henry and/or the farm hands have sexually assaulted Dorothy so she’s very distrustful of men.

Fiyero flirts with Elphaba in front of Glinda in the show.

Did it ever cross your mind how and when Fiyero went to Oz? Why can't they all go as friends? I guess you'll find out in November. If you are expecting an exact replica of the show, same costumes, same lines etc, you're going to be disappointed.

Oh each movie is 90 minutes?

It's so funny, it's kinda like you could merge those two 90 min films, trim a little and it would be

the length of a normal movie musical.

Funny how no one is considering that
