I’m pretty sure Universal is taking Dear Evan Hansen’s failure to heart.

Groundbreaking comment, please, tell us more.
What we really need is Henry Selick to direct a claymation adaptation of this.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande!

I love this pairing
I love it too... but I bet soon we will hear Ben Platt as Boq and James Corden as Dillamond.
Oh, good. I’ve always wanted to hear a completely unintelligible take on Glinda’s songs.
Sooo Cynthia will be great, of course, but uhhhhhh….why are they casting an elphaba-type voice as G(a)linda? Does Arianna have a legit soprano we don’t know about ?

Agreed, if this is what the casting will be like I'm curious as to who else will play the other roles. I wonder if Cynthia playing Elphaba means that she is going to be busy and unavailable to play Celie for The Color Purple film adaptation that's also supposed to be in development.
What's interesting is that Ariana Grande was supposed to play Alyssa Greene in Ryan Murphy's film adaptation of The Prom but she had to drop out because of schedule conflicts and was recast with Ariana Debose.

Yeah, she really needs to get it together for this. She was awful

She has an insanely gorgeous voice, but it doesn’t strike me as the right fit nor does her acting style really feel like a Glinda. Ervio will sound good and she’ll be great. But curious how this will not come off as crazy cheesy.
Was literally watching the Voice last night and noticed how Ariana kept singing in her soprano range. She also has recently mentioned she's been in acting lessons. I am PUMPED for this!! I really think she's going to surprise us. What a dream come true it must be for her. Congrats to she and Cynthia!
I don’t think anyone’s ever said she doesn’t have a gorgeous voice. The problem is you can’t understand a damn word that comes out of her mouth.
Also, now I hope they get Mandy Patinkin for Dillamond

Ariana is very out of left field for this part…
Actually, I made this pic and sent it to Cynthia on Twitter years ago, back when she used to interact with people on there, and before she went full Hollywood:

Grande still seems so youthful and still part of the Disney Channel-type age, whereas Errivo has played Harriet Tubman and feels like a grown woman. It’s difficult to imagine them as peers going through school together and falling for the same guy. To me, something feels imbalanced.

Ariana's lack of enunciation is a stylistic choice and like all stylistic choices can be dropped. She has songs where her diction is much clearer. Notably both of her collaborations with JRB. I've also never seen her as an Elphie. She's always seemed like a Glinda to me. Her voice sits very high both speaking and singing. Her personality also seems more in line with Glinda too. Now obviously acting is acting so maybe she could've done Elphaba but that dark emo kid thing is not her vibe.

Odd pairing. Ariana still looks like a little girl. Erivo in another musical is just as boring as J Hud in another one.
Aren't they supposed to be in school? Yes I know it's a fantasy musical, but the two ladies look completely different ages.

The casting that actually confuses me is Cynthia. Cynthia's brand is slightly more mature and serious. Ariana Debose is around the same age but reads much younger. I would've went with her.

So everyone that clowned Ben Platt for being 27 playing 17 will surely clown Cynthia Erivo for being 34 and playing 18….right?
I think CGI will play heavily into especially that character, so I wouldn’t say it’s even remotely the same thing.
