I'd love to see what John Doyle could do with something like In The Heights. It obviously isn't a totally flashy show but I'd love to see how much Doyle could really strip it down.
How about you? What do you want to see John Doyle bring to Broadway in a completely reimagined production? Do you have an out-of-the-box idea for a show?
I think Assassins and Grey Gardens would good for him.
Spongebob
A Chorus Line. That opening number with the Bennett choreo while playing an instrument would win every Tony Award.
Oddly, Spongebob was my first thought, though he'd need to strip down the book as well.
I think his production of Allegro was something of a misfire, but I'd like to see what he could do with Shenandoah or House of Flowers.
Obviously it’d never happen but I’d have loved to see what he could do with HAMILTON.
The GREY GARDENS idea sounds incredible. I’m not always big on Doyle, I really disliked COMPANY but thought THE COLOR PURPLE was one of the most thrilling experiences I’ve had in the theatre. It seems that a show like GREY GARDENS, which I think didn’t reach its full potential the first time out, would benefit from his ability to get to the emotional core of a show.

Parade (Take the Donmar production even further)
Next to Normal
Bonnie and Clyde. I bet you Doyle could make that show work if he stripped down the cast, had Bonnie and Clyde perform in bullet riddled clothes, that'd be really cool.
I'd love to see what he could do with The Last Ship. That's a show I think would really benefit from being stripped down.

How exactly would he go about doing this? I feel like it'd simply be a more forced version of Greif's production. It would also give a lot less importance to Natalie's recital, since everyone else is out there playing instruments around it.
He doesn't seem to have the actors playing the instruments much anymore.

Having not seen The Color Purple before I was a bit confused by the story telling in his revival. But thought the performances were great. Just wish it had been staged in a thrust.

THAT. WOULD BE. AMAZING.
MATA HARI. It never had a fair chance.
I'm
Surprised The Last Ship has had zero life after Broadway. It's a great score, but no one is doing it.
Dogfight - to give the show a credible Broadway production and punch up the story
Waitress - I think the original Broadway production misses on a lot of emotional marks. That score and story deserved a better director

There aren't many better directors than Diane Paulus, but I do think the show and her vision just didn't mesh. I love the Sara Bareilles album but I hate the show so much.
Kiss of the Spider Woman
No Strings
Candide
Gypsy
I'm sure I'll hear carping that the show is done to death but it's the Lear of musical theatre as far as I'm concerned and I'm interested in seeing all the any decent director or actress take a crack at it. Imagine a regional production with Donna Murphy or Victoria Clark or someone who's never going to get the chance to take the role to Broadway. Could be thrilling. Could be lousy. But I'd be interested to see what he'd do with it.
I'd totally be curious in a Doyle Gypsy. And yeah, I kind of agree about Waitress. I think it's a brilliant show and I've seen it twice, but I don't think she was the best choice for it. I think it could have had a much simpler production. I think it was over directed.
I'd like to see him take on something epic like Miss Saigon.

I'm going to go with Aspects of Love, my first Broadway show and a score I still very much admire.
I'd like to see what he could do with Big River, Smile and Grind. All troubled, all in need of focus. As someone said above, could be great or lousy, but interesting either way.

Doyle should direct a Parade revival. Also curious to see what he would do with Ragtime
