If I was one of the producers of "A Christmas Story The Musical" I would have been on the phone with NBC Friday morning. It is a perfect choice. True, not a lot of people have seen it yet, but many who have seem to really love it. I think it's great. Best12Bars is right. SOM was a success because families wanted to watch it together (like we all used to pre-cable and even pre-VCR)and kids love stories about kids. ACS could be on the air in early December, then open a in a theater few days later (allowing some time to rehearse in the theater space after the broadcast) It's probably going to be an annual fixture in NYC and this exposure would be huge. "Oliver!" is a great choice too for the same kids reason, but ACS would be wonderful.
My bid? Little Shop of Horrors. Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Seymour Katy Perry as Audrey Michael C Hall as Orin/Other Part Cee Lo Green as the voice of Audrey II Mandy Patinkin as Mushnick
I'm betting it will be somewhere along the lines of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF or maybe even CAMELOT. ANNIE has been done to death and WEST SIDE STORY is much to tragic of a story to do for the holidays.
I know it has no real recognition as a 'classic' musical but maybe they can even attempt to do HERE'S LOVE under it's new title: MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET: THE MUSICAL.
It won't happen, but I'd love to see Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, with Megan Hilty reprising her Encores! role. You could fill out the rest with more well-known names.
That said, please not Grease. And ABC seriously needs to do Beauty and the Beast. Or they could try to re-do The Little Mermaid for tv.
Oddly, I don't hate the idea of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, though I doubt they want to deal with the flying car. Perhaps i am just on Annie and Grease overload
Zadan and Meron won't do a project they've already produced. Of that list I'm sort of warming up to West Side Story. The two leads can easily be casted by pop stars, and it already has a fan following. But, is it family apropiate? And I would only enjoy it with the Robbins choreography. Only time will tell. I am guessing we will hear an announcement after the new year.
I do not believe WEST SIDE STORY would get a G rating. Whatever the choice, it must come in as TV-G to maintain family appeal. We never think of that sort of thing but television executives do. And it plays a large part in this whole thing.
I understand that. But I'm still rooting for West Side Story (even though it'll probably never happen). I could just imagine Naya Riveras as Anita, Bruno Mars as Bernando, Chris Pine as Tony (depending on his theatrical voice, even though he did land in ITW), and maybe Ariana as Maria.
