Probably Best Musical and Best Score, but beyond that, it's hard to tell this early when most of the shows haven't even entered previews yet.

I say score for sure.
Curious as to why everyone thinks George is a sure bet. Just because of Michael in the Bathroom? Having seen the show twice off-Broadway, I'd say Jason Tam had the standout performance overall. I also thought Will Roland was great, but that's going to be a tough category to break into.

Best Score, Orchestrations, Featured actor (Salazar), Lighting Design, Sound Design.
Best Musical is possible but I think it depends on how Aint Too Proud is received (assuming the other 3 slots are Hadestown, Tootsie, and Prom).

I know next to nothing about this show, but I hope I love it seeing I spent $199 per ticket to see it!

Speak for yourself. I'm being completely realistic when I say that the odds of it getting zero nominations are very slim.

Then it's probably better to not say "we."

Jason Tam may be giving the better performance, but George Salazar is the one with the showstopper that everyone knows, so that might give him the edge. At the very least, I can see Michael in the Bathroom being Be More Chill's performance at the ceremony, assuming it does perform.

Choir Boy does have music, but it'd still compete as a play, right?

Yes, it's a play.

I think the only nomination "lock" would be featured actor for Salazar. Beyond that, totally up in the air. It's a pretty crowded season and I still think that Ain't Too Proud or Beetlejuice could push it out for things like Best Musical and Book and such. Score and lights are the other two I think it's got a strong chance at but at the end of the day it's a show with a very acquired taste that could very well get mostly shut out. Fan favorite does not equal big nominations.

Posted: 1/26/19 at 9:16pmI didnt find any aspect of this show worthy of a nomination, but objectively speaking I think its unlikely that theyll be shut out of the Score category. Considering how many ineligible jukebox musicals there are this year, then on top of that, you have shows like King Kong, Pretty Woman, and Gettin The Band Back Together which are likely to get completely shut out in the major categories. Plus Joe Iconis has been working in the industry for years, and will likely get votes from his friends and past collaborators.

Based on merit? None
based on the politics of the voters... something like score

It could win Best Musical...or it could not be nominated. BMC's critical reception, grosses, and adult word-of-mouth is going to be a factor, along with the critical praise for other shows. Right now, the score is its only lock for a nomination.
Hadestown and Tootsie seem to be formidable Best Musical contenders, with ~6 shows vying for the 2-3 other slots (The Prom, Ain't Too Proud, BMC, Pretty Woman, The Cher Show, and Beetlejuice). In the acting categories, it's possible that a few shows could get 4-6 noms each: Oklahoma, Kiss Me Kate, and Hadestown.

Pretty Woman will get snubbed. I think the Prom will get a few noms but wont win anything. And BMC will be nominated.

IF the NYT gives another I-don’t-get-it review of BMC, are there any examples from history of shows that were massive fan favorites, did not receive critical acclaim, and ended up winning Best Musical?
