Despite the narrative on here that NYC is a ghost town at 4th of July, these grosses are fine for the most part.
But yikes what a disaster for Gypsy. Obviously this show will not last past Audra and will probably be gone around Labor Day anyway.
Gonna be a tough time at Call Me Izzy while Jean Smart is out.
I feel like Hell's Kitchen is gonna be gone by the end of the year and I'm still keeping my eye on Mincemeat.
I'll be very curious to see how John Proctor does when Sadie Sink leaves. It has been crushing it lately.
5 shows closed the week before, plus the July 4 week is typically a slow time for Broadway.
The GYPSY and IZZY numbers are simply ugly without Audra and Jean.
Happy trails to Tom Francis.
The entire appeal of Call Me Izzy is Jean Smart so I don't see how they wouldn't close at this point especially since her return date is up in the air.
The ATP for Gypsy is INSANE. I guess some people CAN’T even give it away…
Call Me Izzy is riding heavily on Jean Smart and so her absence is basically guaranteed to open a wound that’s already bleeding.
I’m very surprised Stranger Things is somehow staying afloat with a sub-$1M gross. Unless Netflix has a ton of cash to light on fire or the nut isn’t as big as we think it is, it’s definitely losing money.
I remain unbothered and unworried about Mincemeat. It’s following the fluctuations of the season and there is not any major changes in capacity or gross like you see with GYPSY. It’s fine

Based on how far the gross dropped, I suppose Gypsy is basing that 57.81% capacity on the available-for-purchase seats, with the rear mezz and rear orchestra being closed. Which means the average audience size across the week must have been around 27% of a that very big room.
Editing to add: I was all wrong about the above!

I don't think that's true. The capacity listed for both this week and last week (for the whole week) is 12,720. It wasn't even doing great with capacity with Audra but they were selling more high priced tickets.

Yeah, that's pretty dismal.
I hadn't been too concerned for Gypsy's prospects- as long as Audra was contracted, that is- but they just burned a whole week. Without having recouped or without strong advance, that could be very detrimental.
Those Gypsy numbers are terrible. If only they could have gotten Heather Headley instead.

Let’s assume the capacity for “this” week was taken as 12,720 just like the previous week. That means “this” week saw just a 10% drop in persons in the auditorium, but a 70% drop in monies taken in. They must have been some very very cheap tickets, or a truckload of comps. And the comp crowd has probably already seen this production.
I’m still thinking they’re considering “this week’s” capacity as seats available-for-purchase, but very happy to be wrong if the capacity has been calculated as the same week-to-week.
Editing to say: Mea culpa, I see now the average ticket was $39 so there were a ton of comps and discounts with the usual capacity.

I doubt Headley would have helped with sales anymore than Glover.
I believe the initial booking period only went through the end of June, so last week would have been the first week of the extended booking period.

But it also has seats sold on the chart - last week was 8,451 and this week was 7,354. So it wasn't a huge drop in attendance compared to grosses. It was just heavily comped/discounted.
Headley would likely have had a much easier time selling tickets for a week. She is far better known and more exciting to people than Glover. That's no shade on Glover as a performer- but she simply does not have the same reach. They're not comparable in terms of draw.

Indeed, I’m now seeing the average ticket price was $39. You’re right, my bad on the capacity. They really comped heavily and people showed up I guess!
Stranger Things isn’t turning out to be the megahit that was forecast by many folks. I’m sure it isn’t going anywhere before the final season drops in December. It’ll probably get a bump as the marketing machine revs up later this year.
Anecdotally just from polling friends and family who are visiting New York this summer, no one I know has much interest in seeing it, despite having seen the series on Netflix.
It seems like the kinda show that would probably do well on tour.
Gypsy was also advertising $40 tickets w/Glover.

They were advertising $25 day of tickets as well.
I think Gypsy should have shut down for the week a la Jackman in the Boy from Oz. The raison d'etre for this production (and, frankly, any major production of) Gypsy is for the actress playing Rose. It would have underlined the fact that she is the reason for the season and get your tickets now because the show won't be around forever. This was a real exercise in 'diluting the brand.'

If history is a precedent, Headley, Glover, and Patina Miller should have just shared the role.

This is why Audra McDonald has been doing 8 shows a week until now. The producers will have to heavily discount the Sunday matinees, and that’s going to hurt the bottom line every week.
