I smoked a little weed before a performance of a B'way musical yesterday (call it "medicinal" - I couldn't stomach the show without it). I politely took my seat with my companion down in the orchestra (great seats!) and proceeded to flip through my program, enjoying the moment of excitement before the curtain went up. I did not act out, behave stupidly or do anything out of the ordinary.
Within the first 15 minutes of the show, the gentlemen next to me checked his cellphone THREE TIMES, distracting me out of the darkness of an otherwise semi-pleasant experience.
I planned my attack.
During the next round of applause, I asked, "Are you a doctor?"
"No."
"Well then, would you mind putting that away? It's very distracting."
"Well, I didn't say anything about you reeking of marijuana smoke when you walked into the theater."
Touché!
It got a little ugly (he called me rude ... I told him it was distracting again ... then he almost got physical on me - he had a Napoleon complex for sure - all during a 30 second applause moment - the lady in front of us turned around ... and then I told him to shut the eff up to end the confrontation). What a lovely night at the theater! Regardless ... that cellphone didn't come out one more time during the show. :)
Sure, I've been offended by peoples' cologne in public - so be it - and in California, I'm sure half the people in the audience would've reeked of pot, too. But here it's illegal - but isn't texting and using a cellphone in a theater illegal these days or is that just wishful thinking on my part?
