No need to be sorry. I joked around about Patti knocking some broadway star in a boxing match & he will no longer answer any posts I make. A bit harsh but such is life.

Reasons: there were about 6 different styles going on, he forgot how important a set can be. he cut two important scenes. he had his leading lady (who some say is the greatest star on Broadway) act with a stuffed dog. He went back on his word that he would never let her near his show. Updated On: 5/12/08 at 10:27 PM
I don't know about overrated but I have no desire to see Xanadu.

"In theater, the process of it is the experience. Everyone goes through the process, and everyone has the experience together. It doesn't last - only in people's memories and in their hearts. That's the beauty and sadness of it. But that's life - beauty and the sadness. And that is why theater is life." - Sherie Rene Scott
There's a whole lot of things I'm not going to bother getting into in this thread. It's not worth the fight.
The one thing I DO have to comment on is this statement: "Clips do not do Kelli's Preformance [sic] justice."
I'm sure that's true because clips don't do ANYONE'S performance justice. They're CLIPS. So Problem A: they are simply a mere brief sample of a few moments of an actor's work; Problem B: video is a great way of preserving a performance for posterity, but that video can never do justice to energy, passion, or life of the live, real thing.
Thinking a show is overrated and not liking a show are two very different things. I don't think people are quite grasping it. I've heard lots of criticism about SITPWG, and I don't feel it is going to receive too much Tony Award attention.
It seems to be overshadowed by Gypsy and South Pacific, which are also great.
My pick, though not Broadway, for most overrated musical is Adding Machine. I got it. I liked the darkness, but I still thought it was not that great and WAY overrated for the love it's getting.
If I have to decide what I'm going to spend my 100+++ bucks on, and clips were made available by the producers, I really do have the right to judge it based on that. While the arch of a performance is hard to determine, things like vocal ability and character can easily be judged by a few clips. People only say this when their holy show comes up. Some of us aren't alone in the South Pacific/Kelli O'hara are overrated camp.
If you've seen the whole show, then I would consider your opinion valid. South Pacific is not my "holy show," so you can take that sass and shove it you know where. As you said, you cannot experience the arc of an actor's performance from clips. As an actor that offends me deeply.
It's one thing to watch clips and say that you don't have an interest in spending your hundred plus dollars on the show. That is your business and perfectly within your rights. It's quite another, however, to call something overrated that you have not experienced yourself. That is just ignorant.
ETA: Btw, where in my original post did I indicate that I was referring to "South Pacific"? I was referencing ALL of the ridiculous posts from people who haven't seen the shows they are criticizing.
