anyone know what she's performing? Is it something from The Color Purple?
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
It's strange the color purple is doing another performance on Stephen Colbert. Why not jimmy Fallon? Also I hope Stephen has as many or more musicals than David letterman. Didn't David always have the musicals com on at this time of year in preparation of the tony awards?

Colbert seems to be pretty into theatre and has a genuine appreciation for those guests. He gushed over Jessie Mueller's Carole King and asked if she would indulge him in a duet. They sang a few bars of Will You Still Love Me and it was delightful. So I hope he continues to have theatre actors on because his convos with them are always great. I think we're also seeing an uptick because the Tonys are on CBS.
Will be watching. I hope it's I'm Here. Saw The Color Purple a couple of weeks ago with no expectations. Didn't know who Cynthia Erivo was but I soon learned. She moved me deeply with her strength, dignity, love and amazing voice. Yes, she stands tall as a tree.
She sang 'I'm Here' and Stephen introduced it as the first televised performance of the song by her. She was accompanied by a band behind her, she was out of costume and in her full fashionable self with her huge arms just exploding out of her skin (lol). The song was abridged at some points, but she killed it!
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
I've been going to professional theater since I was in diapers and I can say without hyperbole that Erivo's is the greatest musical theater performance I've ever seen. This clip just drives that point further home. What she can do with just her voice -- no sets, no costumes, and no context -- is extraordinary. I hope she's come to like New York and decides to be a frequent visitor to our stages.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
