Are you actually capable of contributing something of a substance into this conversation or you just calling posters names and blabbering about punctuation?

It's horrible to feel unsafe, I get it. But to pooh-ppph the major reasons for this (I should say ONE reason, all the other reasons stem from the ONE--wealth inequality) is sad. The wealthy do not care about poor, sick and desperate people. They don't care about the middle class being robbed at gunpoint or attacked because Bellevue doesn't have the money or room for all the mentally handicapped people that pass through its doors. If foreign nationals are going to buy 40 million dollar investment penthouses across the city, tax them for keeping them empty! If corporations are closing local businesses or tearing down local walk-ups to build towers, tax them! We are so afraid of the rich, so afraid they'll take their money someplace else, we give them all kinds of concessions with barely a nod to the poor who need their own concessions doubled. I know it's easy to blame crime on the "nasty people" who perpetrate it,and that wealth inequality and corporate welfare are possibly too abstract in reasoning to blame, but I would think people on these boards would get it."

Oh dear... this board is full of people whose favorite sport is to bully if your opinion on a theater production doesn't match theirs. The number of times I and many other posters were called names here for stating an opinion.... You've seen some posts here, unless you wind up physically harmed and hospitalized, you're overreacting, you right wing troll.
"

Oh dear. Who called you these names? Why did they call you these names? What names did they call you?  Where are these mysterious posts? Please clarify.

Crime is definitely up, and they're getting more brazen about it.
"

No, it isnt. I dont care how many personal anecdotes you want to share, anecdotes are the opposite of data. Anyone pontificating on the crime rate based on their own personal experiences but without addressing the voluminous public data we have on these issues, should be ignored.

That said, our PERCEPTION of crime has been severely altered by the fact that everyone in the world walks around with a live video camera at all times. This was unthinkable 10+ years ago, so we simply cannot comprehend the higher crime rates from years past in the same way.

And yes, we have to admit, our adjusted bail laws (while well intentioned!) are not helping, and no one--not the ghouls on the right or the fools on the extreme left--have any good answers to growing mental illness issues plaguing this country. I dont have an answer either. But its an underlying problem (exacerbated by our insane gun laws, by our dancing around using the wrong word, etc.) that no one seems to know how to solve long term. I have lived in Manhattan since birth, and crime isnt new; the idea that violent criminals can be released pending trials, thats brand new, and it just isnt working.

while i dont know which post youre responding to here, i can ASSURE you that nothing helps Trump more than declaring anyone worried about crime (even based on exaggerated, hysterical perceptions of reality) is an ignorant bigot who should be written off with the rest of the MAGA monsters. sadly, a lot of MAGA crazies visit the theater. Even Broadway despite what Faux News says about NYC.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

You can thank the Democrats for allowing crime to grow and ruin NYC. They eliminated bail and that needs to return. The voters of NYC need to vote out the Democrats ruining the city."

And vote for whom? Aside from the fact that places run by Republicans aren't statistically safer than those run by Democrats, it's been impossible for decent people to vote for Republicans since at least 2004, when the party leveraged homophobia to ensure Bush'sreelection.
"

There is no Republican Party in the 5 boroughs - it is a joke and they do not even try - the ones that exist are not going after “ gays” turn off msnbc - what is more important is for Democrats to vote in the primaries- know who is running for city council - know who is running for judges - assembly- state senate- so the far left Democratic socialist endorsed candidates who favor criminals over victims are never elected again - nobody voted in the primaries and many only vote in the general- voting straight down ticket Democrat- when the damage was done already and the Democrat socialist won the primary already - look at who you vote for
"

Is that a sentence? You don’t believe in periods? Only dashes?
"

A natural response from someone who has nothing else to say because my points are true and accurate, if you really want to know - I’m on my smart phone and was busy doing something else when I wrote it, none the less with my distractions and all - the post is more profound than anything you have ever spoken in your entire life, because luckily I’m not you ."

Spoken like a true Broadway Patriot — I mean Right Wing Troll."

Refute my post , prove that I’m wrong.Democrat socialist candidates endorse “ reformative justice “ meaning no jails, literally for anyone , example Tiffany Caban of Astoria, she holds city council position because nobody voted in the primary. Do you support her ideology ? Most people do noteven know what these people support , because you want to shoot the messenger, instead of listening. , I’m not even that “ right wing” , to you right wing is anyone to the right of ChairmanMao"

What the hell are you even talking about??? Between your right wing screen name and your incomprehensible posts, you sound completely insane. Are you sure you’re not the orange blob, moonlighting from his repulsive “Truth” social website?"

I’m sorry your level of understanding is so low you don’t understand my posts - there are free lessons online which can help your reading comprehension,  if you don’t understand my post from before , you clearly read under 3rd grade level , NY public schools are bad I know , but this is pathetic , when did “ patriot “become  right wing ? I never knew that, fascinating…. did Msnbc tell you this ?
let me explain it again - there are many Democrats in local government here n NYC, who are endorsed by the DSA( Democratic socialist of America) - they are against jails and believe all crime is because of “ racism “ and believe that the victim should rehabilitate their attacker. For example City Council woman Tiffany Canbanq from Astoria, believes in this specific idea, some call it “ woke” , the actual name is “ restorative justice “. People like her are very influential, in fact more powerful than the mayor; hence this is why crime is high. Idiots , such as yourself do not vote in primary elections , therefore radicals are elected because in general elections , many vote down ticket  Democrat. Capiche?

Thats what the local news is for. To scare the hell out of the people who actually bother with the local news. I am not denying there are serious problems in NYC that require fixes no one seems to have, but FOR THE LOVE OF DATA please temper your emotional reactions to actual data about crime rates, violent crime rates, etc. etc. Its easy to find and would reset your perspective.

KJisgroovy said: ""Almost every big city is seeing an increase in violent crimes"

Except that's not true. Most recent statistics from the FBI show that violent crime is down. The fearmongering is what makes it seem the violent crime is up. We know about the random punching because of Tiktok. We know about these incidents because they are Broadway celebrities. These things happened before Tiktok we just didn't hear about them in the same way. They weren't covered the same way.

If you don't feel safe, that's valid. I wouldn't live somewhere I didn't feel safe regardless of what the statistics say. Feeling safe is not necessarily tied to facts. But. You also can't claim facts when the statistics don't back you up.
"

My problem with the statistics argument is that it tries to write off anything that could be an issue. Is there something causing people to punch random women for no discernible motive? Are there more biased incidents or hate crimes against particular minority groups? Are there more subway pushings? Is there more gun violence? You can't address any of these problems and figure out what might be happening if you ignore them because the overall statistics in violent crime. Writing everything off as random and unconnected and impossible to solve lets a lot of people off the hook.

There literally never has been. My college roommate and I were robbed (of money and most of our clothes) on the D Train in 1992. Do you suppose that we made the 11 o'clock news, or even the Fordham Ram newspaper?

It is absolutely valid and necessary to use anecdotal details to craft strategies to address different types of crime. However, only statistical analysis can support a claim like "New York has gotten less safe over the past five years."

My thought is that that data is probably close but not completely accurate. There are many many attacks and incidents that go unreported. And these aren't "anecdotes" but I have know a number of people who have been attacked over the past several years that didn't bother to report the incident. Last year there was a rash of people snatching jewelry and other items over on 8th between 42nd and 45th. Along with the incident I mentioned on Page 1, I was punched in the face by a homeless person, who ran after he did it, about 10 years ago. The police pulled up, I told them I was hit in the face and they pulled off. Have no clue if they reported it but they didn't ask me for any information outside of what I told them.

And can we get off of the political train and get back on topic?

When I was a kid, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones' 1990s song "Nevermind Me" suggested that if someone mugs you and you walk away alive, and not completely destitute, you were probably NOT the real victim in that altercation. Painfully naive? Probably. Well intentioned? I'm willing to say yes. But it's at least proof that "vagrants are not villains" is NOT some new zoomer-era philosophy.

IT appears felony assault has been on the rise for quite some time in NYC. IT's up about 50% in the last 11 years, or so. And a huge jump in the past 2-3 years.

I must say that Michael has gotten a ton of press over this. Every news outlet I normally read has ran the story. It probably is the most picked up park story since Kevin called the police after his cell phone was taken while he was walking his dog at three in the morning.

I was a bit worried/scared before my Trip to New York reading all of these things. I try to be very aware of the people around me all the time. And I always have it in the Back of my head as soon as I leave the hotel. Thankfully nothing has happened to me or somebody around me. Until this morning... I was on my way to rush for a Show and on 43rd 5th Avenue (I think) there was a guy walking towards us and then he tried to hit a guy that was two people infront of me. Just an innocent guy on his way to work. Either he missed him or the other guy was able to duck. He was not arguing with anyone, he also didnt go back to try hit this guy again, he was just walking along the street trying to hit people for no reason. So it seems. Everything happened so fast. I was completely in Shock. I just kept on walking. That was really scary!!! This could have been me as well. And maybe I would have not been so lucky. The guy infront was just a few meters away from his building/work and he just said "Well.. Good Morning".
