this. This. THIS. A Million times this. It is truly astounding to me, that some yt folks can see this production and say speak on what it is and isn't doing in regards to race. I have said this before, if you are not Black you might have a different experience at this show but to discount Black folks opinions and now say the reviews don't match the production is utter BS. It seems impossible (especially on this board) for some folks to just say they didn't see what POC saw in the show. It's maddening. The show is a HIT! Let's celebrate!
Also noting that the glaring lack of much mention at all of Joy says a lot about her performance and the trepidation many critics had in critiquing her. You mean to tell me Louise (the actual title character of the show) is such a throwaway character as to not mention her performance really at all in any meaningful way?
You should see a chiropractor for all the twisting you're doing trying to make this board believe these reviews are anything but raves and that Audra hasn't received life-time best accolades.

Pilates might help."
You mean the people that are accurately pointing out the reservations about the production that are in black and white in the raves you mention? Yes, they're raves, but many are also qualified raves with issues with the production. I don't think anyone is saying Audra didn't get rave reviews here. Including myself. So...great use of snark I guess?

Yep. Something isn't for them 100% and so in their small brains they figure the whole thing doesn't work.
"And instead of reading the raves and saying, "Well, maybe I missed something," they ignore their own small mindedness andcontinue to dig their own graves. "
It's always fascinating to me that people here, and really I guess it's people on the internet in general, are seemingly unwilling to self-interrogate their responses to things. Like. Even if you eventually end up dismissing review you don't agree with, it's a great opportunity to say to yourself "What did I miss" or "I wonder why that played so differently to all these other folks" I love disagreeing with reviews for that reason. You get to have a fun little conversation with yourself.
I'm not 100% sure why you are so invested in convincing us that the 'reservations' you're going on about alter the actual tone of what the critics are saying. You have serious misgivings about the production. Cool...stand with that. Hell...I even understand why this doesn't work for some people. But why do you need to turn the reviews into something that backs up your opinion when they clearly don't? Sometimes you just have to be ok with being the cheese that stands alone. And hell...you're not alone. A bunch of people on this board feel the same way you do. .I HATED the Fiona Shaw Medea from 20 years ago and I was really the single piece of cheddar standing all by myself in that opinion. I don't care. I hated it and I didn't need the critics to agree with me.
And my snark is expert-level. I got a 5 on the AP test.

Yawn. Anyone who feels the need to insult those who have (gasp) a different opinion of about a piece of art really has no claim at the high road."
A perfect example of being part of the problem. If ever there were a Merriam-Webster definition...
MemorableUserName said: "If you have a Merriam-Webster, you may want to check the spelling of "microaggression" if you're going to throw it around so freely..."
The arguing and anger over whether a piece of art is good or “works” is tiring, futile and pointless. I did not enjoy Sunset. Most others did. I did share my thoughts, but wouldn’t ever think others’ views are wrong or make any effort to try to convince anyone to feel the same as me. I’m really happy so many people enjoy it.
i very much enjoyed this Gypsy also. And again, I’m really glad so many people enjoy it. No effort to convince me I’m wrong or just don’t understand how awful it really is will take that away. Sorry.
It's also true WOM has been far more mixed. All I've heard are mixed thoughts - on the production, on her performance.
It's too early to know, but I bet Nicole still takes it. Here's where it's relevant Audra has 6 already... And when the award season kicks off, suddenly the elbows get sharper.

Exactly this. This board is full of senile white gays so I'm not surprised.
It’s annoying that people are trying to rain on Audra’s parade but it’s equally annoying that as usual people have to pull the cards they are pulling and now we’re not just racist and sexist we’re ageist too in the cloak of the opposite which is just madness. Thankfully this ideology is on the way out…
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
WOW to the reviews for this. As a person who has never seen Gypsy I was a bit worried about this show since I have tickets for later in January. The reviews on here have not been kind. So, I'm a bit more optimistic about liking it now. I mean the only negative review press came from a Trump-supporting rag that probably doesn't hold much weight among people going to Broadway shows (/end of snark). It always makes me happy when a show gets universal praise.

You are mad about fake "microagressions "but think it is okay to use a phrase like this? This is why so many hate the Left.
There was no world in which this production would not have been divisive on this board. It was divisive from the initial announcement back in the spring. It was divisive when they announced additional casting. It was divisive when they revealed their key art.
Although consensus on this board often aligns with critics, Gypsy makes some people here set expectations that cannot be met.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
This reminds me of what happened with the most recent Sweeney Todd revival... VERY divisive on board, but pretty loved by critics (Although, I, admittedly, enjoyed this production of Gypsy way more than the Sweeney Todd revival).
I think Kad is right about some of us having expectations that can't be met.
"There’s nothing quite like the power and the passion of Broadway music. "
There were at least two posters in this thread that implied that no one would review this show poorly because many of the artists involved are black. Those aren't fake microaggressions. I don't think that's the majority of folks who didn't like it... but to deny that that sort of thing still rears its head is. Like. Not the move. Also, it's not an insult if someone suggests a black audience member but notice something different or feel a different way than a white audience member. If aren't one of these posters that posted a micro-aggression or took issue with that suggestion, than don't worry about it. But. To act like that's not still a thing makes you look like you should be lumped in with those posters.
Can't wait to see Audra next month. I've seen Nicole in Sunset and now with this Gypsy glorious reviews, I have a feeling Audra will get her seventh Tony
I’m a Midwestern suburban white woman, and have tickets in a few weeks. I absolutely can’t wait to see this show. The fact that there are black AND white actors in it doesn’t even concern me, and I’m surprised some of the posters are making it an issue. The criticisms of Audra’s voice are ridiculous. I don’t plan to sit there and wonder when her chest voice vs head voice makes a difference. I was lucky to see her in “Shuffle Along”, and looking forward to seeing her again.
Is it at all possible that a show like “Gypsy” can be enjoyed without the slicing and dicing of performances? Thankful for Jesse Greene and his review. I plan on having a great time.
