I'm sorry but performer's vocals get critiqued here all the time. Head voice and chest voice, overall range, pop or operatic tone, and key changes are among the many many aspects of those discussions. It would be more unusual if no one did comment on it for Audra in Gypsy given the mix she is using and the belting associated with most of the previous Broadway divas in the role.

Yes, those are microaggressions.
Also, it's not an insult if someone suggests a black audience member but notice something different or feel a different way than a white audience member.
No, that's not an insult. It is an insult to say that anyone who has a different opinion of you has a small brain. It would be just as true if RememberTheDay (or anyone) had written, "Something is for them 100% and so in their small brains they figure the whole thing is the bestest thing ever."
It would be great if everyone on every side could keep their critiques to the actual content of the shows instead of throwing shade and aspersions and insults at anyone who feels differently, questioning their motives and intelligence. But hey, it's BroadwayWorld.
Anywayyy....Just won the lottery for the matinee tomorrow! Excited to see the first show back after a day of rest and these GLOWING reviews! RIGHT ORCHESTRA Row V for anyone curious about where the seat is.

I agree with you about that comment. It was stupid. But the suggestion that people are only critiquing this production because they are white is equally dumb.
This board is fascinating. Everyone is being so mean! We can all love or hate any show we see. I, for one, really disliked and was disappointed in this Gypsy. But it’s fascinating to see that Word of Mouth and Critics are so different here! I was expecting mixed/leaning positive reviews. Do I want the show to fail? No! I’m happy for them and am open to seeing it again because I saw a very early preview.
But this is so interesting that it’s raves when in-person I hear mostly negative things. Without divulging too much of my personal life, I’ll say that I work in theatre and find myself in a position to talk to strangers who had just seen this show almost everyday. Every single day people have been saying they’ve been so disappointed in this production and didn’t like it. And these are mostly industry people!
Analytically, I’ve been noticing more of a divide between Critics and Industry Insiders as years go by. Especially since the shut down. Look at Critics loving Hell’s Kitchen but most people I know disliked it and then the Tony went to The Outsiders.
Very curious to see if this season’s Tony voters side more with critics or more with word of mouth.
Anyways - glad this show is doing well regardless of my disappointment in it.

Pretty sure your industry people, if real, are just jealous.
It's worth reminding the youths that over-analyzing the acting and singing choices in each production of Gypsy is a tradition that has gone on for as many years as the show's been around. You think some posters are being hard on Audra? You should read what folks wrote about Rosalind Russell. Heck, read what Sondheim had to say about Ethel Merman. It's because the show is so multi-faceted that it stands up to intense analysis. You won't get this much chat about the women playing Sarah Brown in revivals of Guys and Dolls.
Hell, take a walk down memory lane and look for the responses to the LuPone revival here in 2008. Complaints about the key art, the sets, and LuPone herself were just as prominent as those praising it.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."

I can't help but agree with this. I too get to hear feedback from a LOT of theatgoers/industry folk in my line of work.
A few nights ago, a lovely couple who couldn't hold back trying to school me about everything that was wrong with this production (and the miscast leading lady) just happened to be producers of a musical revival just a stone's throw away from the Majestic.
I for one am beyond delighted that Audra and the magnificent cast are receiving all the accolades they deserve.

It's always fascinating to me that people here, and really I guess it's people on the internet in general, are seemingly unwilling to self-interrogate their responses to things. Like. Even if you eventually end up dismissing review you don't agree with, it's a great opportunity to say to yourself "What did I miss" or "I wonder why that played so differently to all these other folks" I love disagreeing with reviews for that reason. You get to have a fun little conversation with yourself."
Hmm...and are the people attacking these views (and claiming "microaggressions" or variations of "white people, amirite?" self-interrogating their own responses?
This is such nonsense. Some people think aspects of the produciton don't work. When you have to villainize someone for not liking what you like, I don't think the issue is with them.
You'd think there were never instances of other shows that didn't tackle race yet led to similar discrepancies of response. Considering all the discussion around Sunset Blvd, this is staggeringly blind.

I don't think the outsiders winning the tony is a good example of this divide you claim exists. This is more an example of the Tony's bias against jukebox musicals. Only 2 jukebox musicals have won the best musical award, including Moulin Rouge which was up against other jukebox musicals. All the new musicals with original music that were up against the outsiders for the award received mixed reviews as well. It wasn't really a surprise that one of them would end up winning.
I feel like you can usually get a good understanding of the response to a new musical by looking at the online reviews of both the critics and the general audience. It's so interesting that you frame "word of mouth" here as the opinions of Industry insiders instead of the general audience, especially because the opinions of these insiders can't be measured in any real way and only serve as anectodal evidence to support your opinions about the show 😭

Equal parts deranged and disgusting. When will this fever break? How do people function under the weight of this much stupid?

Anyway Sara Holdren nails it as usual."
Would love to read the Vulture review but not a subscriber. Anyone have a gift link for it to share, please?

Why ANYONE turns to Michael Reidel — for anything! — continues to mystify. He’s a genuinely despicable individual who presents his opinions as facts and can rarely defend them. He lacks any sense of caring for and knowledge about theatre. What’s more, he lacks any sense of humor, often mistaking cruelty for wit. He’s the type of guy (not man) who is self-satisfied for a particular zinger at brunch when it was actually just mean. And will kvetch to his therapist that nobody likes him.
Frankly, there are several posters here that are more eloquent, passionate, and thoughtful. I’d MUCH rather listen to them.
