Yall can say I’m lying. Yall can say these people are jealous. Say whatever you want to make yourself feel better. But I’m just passing on what I’ve witnessed. I’ve consistently met people who were very excited about the show and left very disappointed. These have almost always been theatre workers of all kinds and some tourists.
Therefore I stand by my statement. Word of mouth has not been great.

Where are we? Middle school? My god. You responded this way to someone saying they were happy for the production getting the reviews it got."
Thank you!

There's microaggressions, and then there's straight-up racism, I guess..."
Please go read a book on what racism is, so that we're not forced to have these conversations AGAIN in 2025 😭"
Racism is juding a person's character on the content of their skin, which at least one comment has done. Do your own reading, if you don't know the defintion.
Everyone enough already! What's happening now lately...everyone seems to be pissed off, filled with indifference or just in a bad mood all the time on this board! What's going on?Let's CHILL n Merry Christmas-Happy Holidays!

Can y’all hear my eyes rolling?
I’m not really sure I understand this reaction. Is the narrative now that we have to believe the show is an unqualified critical and audience word of mouth success or something else? Based on show-score.com, this board and my own reaction to this show plus the anecdotes of others in this thread I believe that the noise around this production reflects something.
I don’t mind that the show got raves as I said before this I kind of low key hoped they’d be kind because it’s not good for Audra or the Gypsy brand. But you can hold a gun to my head and I’m still not going to pretend that outside Audra the production had the same magic the LuPone production did as a whole (just go and watch Booyd Gaines and Laura Benanti in their roles there is a high quality bootleg).
And any name calling associated with this, especially some of the disgusting earlier comments re: suggesting senile white gays etc. is so ridiculous and unacceptable. I refuse to accept this childish viscous emotion it’s among the worst behaviour I’ve ever seen here and it’s not ok.

I love how all the deservedly glowing reviews from critics suggest that a "narrative" is taking place.
You don't have to believe it, and you don't have to mind it.
But it sure is making some folks fume.
I keep reading how Gypsy has the greatest book ever created... the greatest musical of all time. Who decided this? I can think of ten shows that have books as good. It's not the greatest show ever written. It's a good show. A great show. But it's not the "best" show ever written. It's become a vanity show for actresses who have achieved a certain status... doesn't matter if the show or the role really fits them... squeeze them into the show.... Kelli O'Hara you are up next. Ready or not. Sutton Foster... get ready too. Ruthie Ann Miles get ready... we can have an Asian version going too. And I am not racist because i don't want to see an Asian version of Gypsy.

So funny you mentioned this. I was watching some YouTube videos the other night and was amazed at how many musicals Kelli O'Hara has done and wondered when she was going to do Gypsy. Also, when Sutton Foster was cast in Sweeney Todd right after Once Upon a Mattress, I wondered if producers forgot there were other actresses out there. Not that these two ladies aren't incredibly talented, but, yeah, squeeze them in.

I don't understand this protection of Joy Woods where no one actually said she was great (in fact some of my favorite criticsalmost completely ignored her) but no one spoke about how essentially mediocre she is in the role. I like how Sarah Haldren dissected and commented on how the concept doesn't work, however. But even she gave more kudos to Woods than she deserved. But again, these reviews cement Audra as probably theatrical history'sgreatest Rose. SoI'm very happy."
Who made you the barometer of Joy's performance? It feels like you zeroed in on her being "mediocre" and wanted to see that reflected in others opinions. Rooting for negative responses about an actors performance is uber strange. You can say she was not for you and go about your life. Yikes.

I saw tonight’s show. I might say more if I’m inspired later. I thought the first half of the first act was messy. From there it hit hard. Audra’s turn at Rose’s Turn is the best performance I’ve seen on Broadway. Her voice is piercing but is arguably wrong for the role. However, her acting is next level. She’s the Meryl Streep of Broadway. There was a spontaneous and sustained standing ovation at the end of the number that I’ve never encountered. Give her another Tony.
(Btw, we saw the matinee of Sunset and thought Nicole was well directed but superficial and a little stupid in comparison. It’s on.)

Everybody on these boards declare in definitives but that hardly makes anyone a barometer on the subject on which they're speaking. And I'm sorry I do get angered when a mediocre performance is hailed or not called out. And again this kind of thing is not unusual on these boards, but I have a feeling you're mad at me because I'm calling out an actress of color.

This is incorrect. PREJUDICE is judging a person's character on the content of their skin. RACISM is using one's power against someone based on that prejudice.

Welp. Just got a cancellation email for tonight's performance. I hope everyone rests up and gets better.

I wonder if Audra called out or they simply have too many sick cast & crew currently?

I feel like it needs to be said every time this happens (and I get it, as some folks just don't know) but it's standard practice to not rehearse any understudies or covers until after a shows official opening night. For a show this big, one or two illnesses just a couple days after opening night can essentially shut the whole thing down. I wouldn't be surprised if their first understudy put in was scheduled for this morning, too.
