The performance looked like a rip off of the Hades number from Broadway Bares 17: Myth Behavior. The only problems were that costumes were a cheap imitation (Bares used the leash and the cane first), and the dancing wasn't as good...

First, I love Adam!

With that said, the vocals were not good. It was all sorts of shreiking and caterwauling. The whole sexual aggressiveness was just embarassing. And last but not least, his foundation was way too heavy.

sorry *ducks*

I was just telling a friend I don't care that his performance was sloppy. I am just so damn glad that he was lewd and shocking.

Artists are so tame and neutered these days. Pop music is downright boring, we need more Lamberts and Gagas to shake things up.

The only thing that freaked me out was that his make out with the keyboardist looked like he was trying to devour him like a snake. If nothing else, could they not have practiced that to look a little better?

Everything about it was horrible.
He does have talent- you couldn't tell from that.

I think the difference between someone like him and Madonna is that this performance did not seem well calculated at all. Madonna does not have an amazing voice, but she makes up for what she lacks in raw vocal talent with a business savvy and and eye for detail... When you look back on some of her most controversial turns She clearly had a vision and a real finger on the popular pulse.

His performance last night was probably chocked full of TV Pop music firsts (I don't ever recall seeing a male pop star kiss another man or the simulated fellatio) but it seemed pretty old hat... even over the top. He seemed like a parody of the things that actually would have been shocking... Or like a little boy playing dress up. I don't believe for a second that the aggressiveness of that thing was HIM. Like others have said... it would have been much harder to argue with it had his vocals been good. I know the country erupted in Lambertmania a few months back, but I still don't see the big to do. It seems all smoke and mirrors and effect. I would hope that a guy with true vocal talent, given the platform this guy has been given would be able to showcase his vocal talent better, since so many people seem to think he has it in spades.

HATED IT. Thought this was much raunchier than Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction, and that caused quite a stir. Would like to have known in advance there would be simulated oral sex - sorry, I draw the line there.

Saw him once as Fiyero in LA, and he blew me away. But, after that performance last night, no thanks.

Although the vocals were horrible, I enjoyed his performance. I thought it was unique and entertaining to watch.

Vocals were not good for someone as talented as Adam Lambert. The performance was not focused. It was not great. Gaga's performance was far and above any other of the night. I mean, come on... How can you go wrong with a burning piano?!

Yeah, shocking does not necessarily equal good in my book. Absolutely nothing was good or in good taste; nothing was focused or well executed; everything felt forced and too in-your-face and over-the-top to be considered any good. I thought it was a complete train wreck, and to top it all off, he sounded dreadful. Completely off-key and his riffs were just annoying, unnecessary, and all over the place. Not a fan at all. I find his voice very grating and hard to listen to. Chalk me up as one who was dissuaded from buying his album due to his performance. I don't care if "it made the right wing upset," it made me upset as a theatre person and as a gay man to be equated to anything that took place on that stage. Really, we get one out person in pop music and this is the face that gets to represent an entire population? If his performance were shocking and GOOD, then I'd be whistling a different tune. But wow, that was cringe-worthy and completely unwatchable.

On the other hand, Lady Gaga was brilliant. Now that is how you make shocking become art. That people are saying Adam Lambert is anywhere near that genius is completely ridiculous

It all felt thrown together for shock value, so we're only doing what they intended us to do, which is talk and talk about it.

The CD isn't bad at all. I thought there would be more "vocal flare," but it's not bad at all. There are some catchy songs though.

I just wish he'd create a good performance rather than a bunch of skanky moves strewn together last minute.

"Artists are so tame and neutered these days. Pop music is downright boring, we need more Lamberts and Gagas to shake things up."

Boring yes... but only because today's performers are all cookie cutter strip/sex acts with backup dancers.

IMO today's popular music is swallowed up by "shocking" and media-attention-grabbing antics. We can thank Madonna for setting that precedence. But heck, even Madonna has aged past many of her sexual antics of 20 years ago.

I don't consider today's artists tame and nuetered... I consider them ridiculously overt. I am so tired of seeing/hearing the obnoxious Britneys, J-Los, Pussycat Dolls, Christinas, Mileys and other no-talents masking their lack of vocal talent/ability with live sex performances. Most of the time, they lip sync so they can fully concentrate on the onstage physical performance. That kind of "talent" is mis-guided IMO. You mentioned Gaga... sorry, she's vocally lackluster live as well. She typically drops songs a key so she can concentrate on her "art."

I held Lambert (while on Idol) in high regard because he was "different" and had and odd twist to his perfs. Most importantly, I felt he was the first artist in a long time that would awe with his vocal prowess first and foremost. However, the other night he fell prey to the boring mainstream ideal that one has to "shock" in order to market themselves.

Lambert has the talent... so I was frustrated to see him stoop to immaturity. Heck I am a gay male and personally feel Adam took us back about 2 steps the other night. He played into a stereotype IMO, and I was terribly dissapointed by it.

I bought Lambert's album, but definitely not because of his perf the other night. I wanted to hear him SING. As expected, it is VERY good. At this point, I'll stick to listening to him and don't care to watch him.

I hope the next time he performs at the AMAs that he remembers that it's a MUSIC awards show... and the focus should be on the music, and not groping around on the stage.

Rise above it Adam.

You honestly think Christina and Gaga are "lackluster" live?

"You honestly think Christina and Gaga are "lackluster" live?"

If you were asking me...

Yes, I find Gaga live vocally lackluster. She relies heavily on backup and undersinging and as I said, scales down.

Christina, although a powerful belter, is vocally annoying to me. She couldn't just "sing" a song if her life depended on it. She has to riff very other measure.

I am a bigger Broadway vocal fan than I could ever be a pop fan. I prefer disciplined, clear vocals, it's hard to find that in most pop performances. Lyrics are important to my enjoyment. Because of that, in general I enjoy hearing a recorded pop vocal rather than seeing them struggle or scream through it live.

But if we're showing our garters here... I'll never be a pop star... I'll never star on the legit stage either. I just enjoy being a message board critic. LOL!

You really need to check out GAGA's unplugged youtube stuff. She also some unplugged stuff you can buy on itunes. She has an amazing voice. There are hints of early Cyndi Lauper raw-nes in her voice. She is brilliant IMHO. I thought the whole thing rocked. (except the whole breaking glass on the piano... i did not get that...)

I think Adams biggest problem is that this was his first LIVE TV appearence like this and he tried too hard.

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

And...he should get it!

Not related to his AMA performance, but after listening to him rip those high notes, does anyone else think he could possibly play St. Jimmy in American Idiot? I think Tony Vincent is practically irreplaceable in the role, but I kinda also think that Lambert could pull it off (at least vocally!).

I missed the performance and have been searching for a video of it online, but they've all been taken down!

Anyone have a link or know where I can watch his performance online?

GaGa always sings live. Always

If you have actually watched any of her performances you'd see that she normally sings an octave higher and in harmony with any backing vocals, so you're wrong there as well

As for Lambert, CBS Early show censored with a blur his kiss when showing a clip of the performance, but seconds later showed the infamous Madonna-Britney VMA 2003 kiss.

It's an outrageous double-standard. See the link I've posted.

Elizabeth Hasselback is a morn too. She was ranting against Lambert on The View. I am sure she wouldn't mind if Taylor Swift kissed a man onstage. She's a dolt.
