I always have HORRIBLE luck buying these things when they first go on sale. I wait in holding patterns forever it seems and then the ticket selection is awful. But tomorrow morning I will give it my best. Also, I have looked at a number of photos online, and the balcony is way to steep for me. It looks like I will be going for orchestra. I have about 14 people that want to go (including a handicapped person), so I have a lot of tickets to buy. Any tips are appreciated.
Many people believe Pearl Bailey was the best Dolly ever. This clip, long unavailable on YouTube, displays her emotional dept and her dazzling star quality. (And with the original Gower Champion staging!)
Bette, I love ya honey, but you can't just be better than Carol or Barbra. You gotta better than Pearlie Mae:
Well--Just watched with great interest that clip and fondly remember forevever listening and enjoying the voice and 'adlib' for the great PB--but with this viewing I just hope to God that NONE of what I just saw will be used in this 'new ' production--how things date [no rap parade though please]. Why did Ms Dolly have to disappear and the camera try to follow her amongst the crowd--silly. Anyhow am sure as I read-'parts' will be kept of the original---waiters' gallop eg. I hope ,and all that silly faux ballet nonsense with the food etc.--lots to keep and just as much to throw away.
Watching and reading with great interest from afar as rumours change and multiply.
PS----HAVE JUST BEEN TOLD OFF BY PJ THAT I USED A WORD THAT WAS RACIST AND 50 YEARS OLD SO WILL JUST LEAVE A ?? MARK AND YOU [READER] CAN USE WHAT EVER WORD YOU LIKE ,but whoever it is- ??--if that casting is correct--then it is-PERFECTION !
Having the star "disappear" in the middle of the number and reappear at the end is one of the ancient precepts of good choreography and staging: It builds excitement.
I'm so torn on this whether I should try to get tickets as soon as they come out tomorrow. How likely is it that the balcony seats will sell out quickly? (I'm not going to spend any more than for the cheapest seats, since I just can't afford more than that, sadly). Here's hoping it would be just as enjoyable from the balcony - the only time I was in the Shubert was in Matilda, where I had a partial-view extreme side orchestra seat from Rush,
Also if it's true that Ms. Midler's alternate/understudy is a woman of color, that would be good at least, and offsets some of the complaints of lack of diversity, but I still think they could have done more. Though if the current cast is great that wouldn't matter.
I would imagine that the less expensive seats will go very, very quickly
I sat in the very last row of the balcony for Matilda. It's certainly not the best seat I've sat in, but you have a full view of the stage and will be able to enjoy the show just fine.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
Just placed Telecharge Group Order... customer service rep indicated that they are not taking orders for any Tuesday performances as Bette will not be performing.
I attempted to place a group order on Telecharge this afternoon. I gave the sales rep four possible dates and times. She said two of them were unavailable for group tickets, the other two were possible, however, there is no guarantee. The order was forwarded to Ticketmaster sales which is supposed to send an email with the status. She said this is usually done within 24 to 48 hours.
So this puts me in a quandary. Do I try to buy tickets tomorrow in case I don't get the group tickets? Would be so disappointed to get shut out.
So wait, Re: Bette's Standby. Looking at the clues people in know have dropped... Famous Broadway Actress. Would make Pearlie Mae proud. Only doing two shows a week. Could it be Audra?
I don't know her due date but she is likely to have had her baby before this opens. Only having to work 2 shows a week would give her time to be with her family. Not to mention she is a name that would not disappoint the folks that miss out on a Bette show. Eventually she might then transition into the role full time after Bette leaves. She doesn't have Shuffle Along to go back too and Lady Day in West End is likely going to be postponed a long while. Possible?
LesWickedly said: "Interesting. Wouldn't expect them to have her miss the first performance of the week.
Makes sense if you think about it. This would allow her to have two consecutive days off so she can rest or fly back to California, or whatever it is fabulous celebrities like to do!
EthelMae said: "Am I wrong about this? I saw Ethel Merman's Dolly and as I remember it, she played 8 shows a week. And never mised one. I don't think any Dollys in the original show played 6 shows a week. Who in hell will buy tickets on a day Midler has an alternate going on?
I will. I'd rather see just about anyone than Bette Midler.
Audra may not be as famous as Bette, but I seriously doubt that she would be a two-show alternate for her- the woman has six Tonys and just won a National Medal for the Arts! Plus, she's too young to play opposite Pierce.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
