4000 CASES in NYC as of this evening...NYC Needs to do this now!!!
All Californians, Nearly 40 Million People, Have Been Ordered To Stay Home To Stop The Spread Of The Coronavirus "This is a moment where we need some straight talk and we need to tell people the truth: We need to bend the curve in the state of California."
I know this sounds pessimistic but I am now convinced we will not be able to contain the virus due to the delayed, inconsistent or lack of action from most western countries. I only hope we can hold on until there is a vaccine.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Hold on economically and preserve as much life as possible*

Yeah, holding on economically isn't really an option, because at this point...I feel like it's gonna collapse either way. But that's def on our 'dear leaders' who knew about this since NOVEMBER and did.absolutely.nothing. And continue to drag their damn feet. We could have made like S.K. who's already in recovery mode but NO....
Secondly, experts have been saying it's not going to be contained anymore. It's here, its spreading. What CAN happen is....FLATTENING THE CURVE. Aka, stay home as much as possible, when you do go out if necessary for the love of heaven, step lightly as it were, watch your hygiene, etc.
As of Friday afternoon, there were 7,845 confirmed coronavirus cases in New York State, with 5,151 of them in New York City, according to official data.
A jump in CASES overnight from 4000 > 5151 in NYC!!!
"Anything you do, let it it come from you--then it will be new."
Sunday in the Park with George
I think the jump in cases is attributed to the fact that we keep adding testing capacity in the NY area. Governor Cuomo basically says this every single day during his press conferences. So the increases are expected. He's trying to do what South Korea did in order to stop the spread but the issue is he needs federal support and is not really getting it.
I hope that Broadway can start to reopen by late May-early June so that they can benefit from potential Summer tourism. Travel always comes back.
Travel doesn't come back quickly, it's a luxury, just like Broadway tickets. Considering we will be in a recession with millions out of work, the bounce back will NOT happen at the end of May. It will be years.

This isn't something I thought about, but seemingly we're taking the lead in terms of ramping up testing. So if it's because of ramped up testing, that's gives me a mite of hope. Dear heavens we're so behind overall thought... Never thought I'd said I'd like the guy, but here we are. And of course he isn't getting fed support...SHOCKING, I say!
Ive seen multiple ads where shows are saying to buy tickets for April 12th and onward. Why are so many shows doing this with the uncertainty of shows coming back that soon?

Probably because they need the advance sales on the books to help the investors make decisions about whether they CAN come back and push through this...

There was never a hope to contain the virus. All of the shutdowns are primarily meant to slow the rate of transmission as to not overwhelm the health care system, so they can treat as many people as possible; that is the only goal. The hope is that you slow the spread enough so that at some point you have enough of the immune who have already gotten through it, combined with enough people who never caught it who eventually have a vaccine, and by that time you have enough herd immunity to move beyond it.
A source told me, now full transparency I don't know this source well but they are connected to the topic at hand...but the source says, "Cancelling the TONYS isn't an option, that's not the spirit of theatre."
Instead there is a serious discussion that whatever opened before Broadway shut down, THEY will be eligible for Tonys. Anything else that manages to still open/survive, will have the option to either fall into nowhere or be pushed into the 20-21 year. That will hopefully guarantee there will even be a 20-21 year.
Take it for what it's worth, it's just what Im being told...

If that is true (and I do love the optimism) is gathering by June 7th in a very large auditorium how they will be presented?
Having the Tony's right now is foolhardy. Call it pessimism or realism, but not only will it be unsafe to have them at all, this WILL NOT die down by then and won't for a while...unless a damn miracle happens, so yes it is an option. But it's also completely unfair to the rest of the shows of the season. I'd rather see it not happen at all. Either none are eligible or they all are eligible. Maybe it's just that I don't want to see the victims of circumstance shut out because of something they couldn't control. Just like people, the privileged will buy their way in.
I don’t see how this is even feasible. Has the nominating committee even seen all the shows that had opened? And if so have a enough of the voters seeing all the shows that will be nominated?
Beyond that I suppose I could see how they could possibly just have an announcement of which shows one but I don’t see there being any kind of an award ceremony.
I hope I’m wrong but I think this is going to go on a lot longer than people think it will. I’d be surprised if we have any shows back on Broadway prior to August and I think even that is optimistic. That being said I know China’s Apple stores are back up and running so we’ll see. But even with that I believe they started seeing cases in November and we are now in the end of March.

It's cool to be in the spirit of things, but state law prohibits it, which trumps everything. The Tonys will be cancelled or postponed for months. People still thinking it's happening on June 7th are ridiculous.
Sounds like Lincoln Center is going with the 8 week recommendation. Some of the non profits could very well cancel spring and summer venues and then open with the fall season.

Late summer or fall does seem far more likely for when thing might be up and running with some semblance of normality.

Huh...I can actually think of other things that qualify as artistic tragedies. This definitely NOT one of them.
It's been revived over & over again. It'll come back in another form...someday. Until then, focus on the tragedy we are facing in the real world."
Seriously? Please let people be upset. Once again this is a broadway message board for people with a love of broadway. They are allowed to feel upset about shows closing.
