“My educated guess is the newer shows maybe have understudies that aren’t as efficient in delivering the role as the lead is. Some of the older shows have more experienced understudies and more experienced swings.”

I saw that too. I'm wondering if some of the bigger cast shows like Phantom are rotating their u/s, swings, etc in more often then before.

If anything, it’s also possible they might be able to swing in people from tours that might be down or on break if they are that desperate

There are three types of tests being offered to house staff and crew: rapid, rapid pcr, and lab pcr. Each production appears to decide for itself how cast and musicians are tested. To my knowledge, Come from Away is the only show that requires the lab pcr for everyone, though I thought I had heard one or two other shows had started that requirement, too. There's also no consistency between shows as to how many times a week everyone is tested.
There are simply not enough people to cover absences, which is why these shows are canceling performances. And since passing on a virus doesn't result in immediate detection, it's becoming an untenable situation. We have one or more cast/crew members testing positive, who are then re-tested and sent home. Everyone who works closely with them is notified and retested. But, the infected have likely already exposed others, who are still possibly incubating. Meanwhile you still have cast and crew scheduling time off, or calling out (for whatever reason), etc. Now you have another (or more) positive test result. So now we have additional people out, and no coverage.
Broadway is a business, so how many replacement actors can we expect them to employ, when salaries are a show's largest expense? This is going to be an endless cycle, which is going to start affecting the advanced sales (the lack of which will close a show). Also, why does a show like Hamilton, which should have a large number of alumni they can call in, decide to cancel instead? We seem to forget that there are a number of people in the arts who refuse to get vaccinated, which also may be tainting the availability of additional cast and crew (I know many theaters are struggling for ushers, who simply didn't come back, so I'm sure the same goes for actors, stagehands, musicians, etc).
I don't follow football at all but I just heard on the news that the NFL is only testing those who show symptoms. Perhaps this is something Broadway should consider?
In an address from the White House today, President Biden said that it is our "patriotic duty" to be vaccinated. He also said that vaccine mandates are not (and I paraphrase) designed to control lives, but to save lives.

That is correct regarding the NFL. And yes, I agree completely.
Also, to the poster who mentioned Hamilton, I am quite shocked that they canceled the entire week with their incredibly deep roster of humans in that company.

This is right out of the Trump line of reasoning. “Test less and then we won’t have as many positive cases to deal with.”
A-symptomatic spread will result in people getting infected and possibly having a symptomatic case, or worse.
In an industry which is full of singing, resulting in whatever’s inside the body coming outside the body to linger in the air, in a packed auditorium, this would be a foolish approach. IMO.
The NHL is going on an early Christmas pause and have postponed all games through Dec. 26. The NHL will likely use the Olympic break to reschedule games. The NBA has only had a handful of postponed games so far.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

It is possible. I heard that the NHL is not sending their players to the Olympics in Feb. and announcement should come tomorrow.

Cierra Renee mentioned last night on Stars in the House that she's been calling out if they have cases within the cast. Sunday evening all four swings were on. Don't see Waitress back before Christmas and they're remainder of their run may be in jeopardy.

I saw the show on the 7th and everyone but Ogie, Dawn, and Pomatter were understudies. Found that to be odd but immediately assumed it was Covid-related. I also caught Phantom the following week with three understudies and Emilie was on despite it not being one of her scheduled performances.
All of this shows us how horribly unorganized this entire situation has been from the beginning. Every single show should be following the same timing/scheduling and protocol for testing and such. The fact that a show has a leading actor choosing to call out of the show for their own health and safety says everything. What a damn mess.
I do wonder how long some of these individual show cancellations will end up extending unless producers wave the white flag, seeing as Omicron will be a rapid-fire burn that will likely fade in a matter of weeks. Well into the new year - February / March???
