Even with Music Man cancelled, we have 23 Broadway shows set to perform tonight.

I absolutely agree with this. For sure the producers of each show should have been much stricter about backstage protocols when it comes to testing and mask wearing, but we’ve seen enough anecdotes to suggest that company members too have been far too complacent recently - also how many members have had their booster jabs? I understand that this isn’t a requirement right now, but considering how vitriolic the Broadway community has been against anyone who is seen to be anti-vax, I would hope that it’s near 100%.
However at the end of the day, Omicron is so transmissible that I really don’t think it matters who is masked or not. They reduce the chance of infection but only that. All these cancellations are awful and so unfortunate for an industry trying to get back on its feet, but we’re living in unprecedented times right now, and I’m not sure there’s a whole lot more any company’s could have done to ensure the shows stay performing right now.
I would quote another post on here, but BWW isn’t letting me do so. Again, even though I’ve disabled my ad blocker.
If you’re not on instagram, the Broadway Understudies twitter account has been doing a great job of updating (also, sorry this isn’t clickable. That isn’t working either!) And for those not on instagram: https://twitter.com/understudies/status/1475603496577777665

Tourist and ticketbuyer behavior is not the same as it was before, and some shows were a hard sell prior, anyway. It also shows that the League is willing to scapegoat the front of house for the closures (off-site testing with entrance refusals until test results are received, no bar, stringent oversight of staff and audience by covid monitors). Meanwhile, all cancellations are the result of backstage outbreaks, where enforcement is unenforced except at the stagedoor. Cast and some crew are tested on site, which means those with Covid are now exposing others. Covid monitors don't enforce mask usage on cast and crew during pre-show setup or in backstage areas. Further exposing others. Actors aren't wearing masks when not on stage during performances, which is supposedly required. Musicians and music directors are inconsistent with masking from show to show (a friend of mine who works at Come From Away was outraged that not only aren't the musicians masked, but the flute player is continuously allowed to blow his flute inches away from the faces of audience members). It's time to stop tiptoe-ing around backstage enforcement protocols and bring down the hammer."
When i think of the protocols that my kid has to jump through to participate in middle school band (negative test or wear a special face mask made for instruments), really aggravating that these adults who are getting paid to be there aren't being held to the same standard.

People working on shows shouldn’t be blamed for getting COVID. It’s not a failure on their part. What are they supposed to do? Live in quarantine? Yes, they could mask up whenever offstage or if they’re in the pit- but the onus remains on theater owners and producers to enforce that any protocols. Odds are, any number of people working on these shows were exposed in any number of regular day to day interactions.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
Miguel Cervantes said that at the outbreak at Hamilton, no one offstage had Covid. Probably due to their militant masking policy. If this is true, then policies work, if people follow them.

No."
For what it’s worth, I am fully vaccinated, boosted, and consistently wear an N95 mask- several coworkers tested positive, and then I did, too. It IS so transmissible that even extremely cautious people such as myself are getting it. My caution, however, was beneficial in that I did not infect my family.

That’s devastating. I’m glad they were able to have any kind of run this year, and I’m lucky I was able to catch this earlier in their run. I’m happy to report that the orchestra (except for the woodwinds and brass, obviously) were fully masked the whole show, but with such a large cast that included children, I bet the spread was hard to contain.

So they got it not following the no stage door rule ?

I guess so - Per Telecharge :Mr. Jackman will not be appearing in THE MUSIC MAN on the following dates: January 2 - 5, 2022"
Do we thinkSean Montgomery would be on as Harold Hill?"
I'm sure he'll get rehearsed in case Clayton is out. But as a standby, Max would be first to go on.

I think you're forgetting people have lives outside of their jobs. I know people in shows who have been beyond cautious but then got it from their kids, who got it at school. These people have lives outside of the theater and no matter how militant you are there are a million moving pieces.
