I thought maybe Audra would be the last revival, but actually the obvious successor is Lea Michele. She has the voice, she has had a bit of a career revival/respect, she seems to be a genuine box office draw (Funny Girl, Chess). 15 years ago if someone posed the idea they might be laughed away as a naive Glee fangirl.
I could easily imagine this being a bit of a 'swan song' Michael Mayer project with Lea Michele returning in the next 10 years.
Even better if they get Aaron Tveit or Jonathan Groff as Herbie.

The last revival’s lack of interest, even with Audra McDonald headlining it, finally made its point: GYPSY needs to be shelved for a few decades. As everyone has noticed, a 10 year gap on a Broadway feels like 6 months. A 15 year gap between revivals always feels like there was a 3-5 year gap between them. There’s nothing new that can be done to the show - Sam Mendes and George C. Wolfe tried.

I agree 100 percent.

I think the vocal BWW participants on here are generally tired of Gypsy discussion because of the last Broadway production. Right after Funny Girl and before Audra Gypsy, there were similar numerous comments on here that Lea should be the next Gypsy in 10-15 years. It'll become popular again in a couple years.

Sutton Foster has a better chance at being the next Rose, and I'm not even sure I'd pay to see that. I think we need a lengthy moratorium on Broadway productions of Gypsy. I don't need to see every 45-65 year old actress with a big voice take on the role.

I’m also part of the team that thinks GYPSY needs to be shelved for a while. It’s become so ubiquitous that even a 16 year gap between the LuPone and Audra productions didn’t feel like a wide enough break.
I feel like Lea could’ve been a good Louise once upon a time, but I cannot see her maturing as an actress or singer enough to do the role justice, let alone leave her own stamp on it

we get it. you're not a fan.
Putting that aside, I don't believe it's a role Lea has ever expressed interest in playing one day anyway.

It’s a museum piece at this point. Even after all the chatter re: casting for the last revival, a legendary director and star gave us the most ordinary (arguably pedestrian) production possible. Laurents is gone, this was the chance to try something big that he could not veto. Instead of a big artistic swing, we got Audra crying in every big scene despite her character saying “this time I’m not crying” and Louise’s back-up dancers wearing spray painted unitards from UNIQLO. The result was a lumbering presentation. Truly a missed opportunity for all.

Maybe in like fifteen years. I found her performance in Funny Girl to be unsettling in a way that would apply really well to Rose.

Between LuPone’s revival and Audra’s there was a 16 year gap and it STILL felt like it was too soon. GYPSY needs to disappear for about 30-50 years. An entire new generation needs to be born AND be completely unfamiliar with any stage adaptation of GYPSY for it to have any new relevancy again. The next Mama Rose begins pre-school in the Fall.

What is the overlap between Lea Michele’s fan base and existing Gypsy fans? I’m guessing she would bring in a whole new generation. I agree just the thought of another revival is a bit much, but I suspect in 10 years time it won’t feel such. In 10 years it’ll be almost 30 years since the Patti Gypsy. I suspect those who still have memories of it will be a tiny minority of the target audience for this show.

please no
when it comes to gypsy
why does every diva have the attitude
its my turn now
the arrogance and entitlement is out of control
audras limp revival lay bare the problem here
there should be a gap of at least one generation between revivals
patti cast a long shadow
and audra was out of her league
also im surprised that the title of this show hasnt already been banned by the woke mob
and replaced with the title
legacy

Audra will always be my Mama Rose. The cast recording was in my Spotify wrapped. I think the show needed better branding, but her performance I think of often.

I'm not opposed to this. A Michele-Groff GYPSY sounds very, very good on paper.
But, we've still got one more Broadway revival to go before we arrive there in about 20 years: the inevitable Sutton Foster production at Roundabout, directed by Leigh Silverman. :)

Half a century is absurdly long. By that measure, they would have never been the Lansbury revival in '74. 15-20 years seems a more appropriate gap. I don't think the Audra Gypsy would have felt too soon if the Peters revival had not been so quickly followed by LuPone. It was those two in quick succession that made Audra's, even 16 years later, feel too soon.

Oh, Jesus Christ.
Can we not do this? Or at wait until she's in her late 40's?
We don't need another revival of Gypsy. Not for a long, long time.
