This sounds pretty silly - they don't know anything about DEH but they know:
1. Who was in it on bway - including replacements
2. Who was dating whom?
Very silly.
And....of course, back to the ridiculousness that gay people can't/shouldn't play straight characters?
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

On Broadway, I've seen both Dan Macke and David Jeffrey as Connor and both of them had short hair, but their style and vibe still made sense with that line. Dan is an understudy so I figure he would need short hair as he allows covers Jared and I know David still covers Evan despite playing Connor so that sort of explains it. I know Alex Boniello grew his hair out through out his run in the show, but he originally had short hair when he started.

So, you're just going to ignore this, and come up with your own facts?

I forgot. No one has ever fibbedbefore.

So, it makes more sense to disregard the fact that he said in an interview that he grew out his hair, to disregard the video of him in August 2020 with long hair, and to disregard this tweet, than to simply accept that it's his real hair?
WHY would he lie about such a ridiculous thing? He even states: but sadly those are my own curls?

I totally agree. That would be such an odd thing to lie about. If Ben Platt says he isn't wearing wig, we should believe him.
With that being said, I find it interesting that Ben is addressing the hair/age comments at all. From a PR standpoint, it seems like an odd choice to publicly respond to something like that.

I agree, I was surprised to see him commenting on any of this. No need to, let the haters hate.
With that said, wig or no wig, it was not a great choice. I actually think a buzz cut or super short style would have made him appear younger.
When Ben played the role on Broadway, he said that Evan was thin because it didn't seem like the character would pay much attention to eating. For the film, they could also be saying that, with his depression, he wouldn't worry much about having a nice haircut, and his social anxiety would preclude him from going to a barber/salon. Also, for all we know, his long hair could be addressed in the screenplay, which is another reason why people should wait to see everything in the context of the film before getting all bent out of shape.
And many people hide behind longer hair. When men do it, they seldom realize it brings them more attention since it is unique.

Sutton likes Ben’s hair. You should ask him where he bought it! Then you can continue on your BEN IS AMAZING AND EVEN HIS FARTS ARE POETRY kick by BECOMING him! You can do DEH alone in your bedroom! And, if you give it a red rinse, you can also do ANNIE!

I am very much looking forward to her performance as I feel she is one of the most talented actresses of our time. However, I do share your concern that she is not vocally up to par.

I’m sure she’ll be fine. But it will still come nowhere close to that moment shared between BP and RBJ onstage.
I thought the trailer was really wonderful and while I was definitely a bit taken aback by Ben's hair, I've gotten used to it the more I've seen it and I think it does work to make him look younger. The cinematography of the trailer is gorgeous and very in the realm of how great Perks of Being A Wallflower looked.
I think the trailer does a great job of capturing the essence of the show and bringing it to a wider and grander scale. Whenever a movie musical comes out, I am always excited for people who aren't lucky enough to get to see shows on Broadway/tour/etc to get to see just a taste of what makes Broadway magical.

And I'm not on social media so had no idea it had dropped.
So I'm really conflicted. I really, really, REALLY wish they had just filmed the stage version like they did for Hamilton. To me the stage version is absolute perfection.
I've been worried about how the intimacy of the live show will translate to the big screen. And how the addition of characters and songs etc will work. So I've been anxiously awaiting the trailer. I just watched it and I'm still conflicted.
Some of it gave me chills, but some not so much.
I agree with all the initial negative impressions of Ben's hair, his makeup, his entire look and that he is just too old for this. I was really taken aback first seeing him. As some have remarked, hedidn't look real.
Also, I was not particularly impressed with any of the brief glimpses of any of the adults, or the scene in the principal's office.
And I think they gave away WAY too much information - like Connor's suicide. That is the first huge reveal in the show, and now it's out there in the trailer. So it totally takes away that first OMG moment. As some have said, they managed to tell basically the entire story in the trailer. To me a trailer should be a tease, not a reveal.
Will obviously have to wait to see the finished product, but obviously hoping it doesn't disappoint and turns out to be a pure masterpiece :)"
So, after watching the trailer a few thousand times, in addition to dozens and dozens of reaction videos on Youtube (something I didn't even know was a thing - reaction videos that is, not Youtube haha), I'm no longer conflicted. The whole trailer gives me chills, and I think the film is going to be EPIC!
I just had to change my mindset and come to terms with the fact that it's not a proshot, it's not the play, it's an entirely different thing. I don't even notice Ben's hair anymore. It will be so amazing to see all the iconic moments of the show on the big screen - For Forever, Only Us, Words Fail, SB/SS, etc.
It's really fun watching people's reaction to the trailer, especially those that aren't familiar with the show/plot at all. I now think the trailer is masterful - taking us on a mini-rollercoaster ride. I'm not even upset at the Connor suicide reveal anymore lol. Watching all the reaction vids I see it's central to the overall narrative of the trailer and entices us to want to learn more about how all these elements play out.
FYI the primary Universal trailer site on Youtube is up to 3.9 million views - so almost a million views/day so far - with 55,000 likes and only 1,100 dislikes.
Total DEH fanatic and love to chat with similarly obsessed fans. Please feel free to PM me. In times like these, we could all use a friend.
I'm on the team who really liked the trailer and is very curious to see how it all translates to the big screen. Though some of my friends thought the trailer had this "Oscar-bait" tone to it, which I can understand, but it's a September release date film though. That term applies to November-December releases that have that air about them, "This Holiday Season" is a giveaway as well, which Cats tried to use to not so hot effect.
Eh. I just can’t get behind any of this. This man is here because his father paid for it. They curated a show that best suits his talents. Not saying he isn’t talent. I didn’t see him in the role but he’s clearly a great singer and actor but the fact that his only Broadway credits before this were shows his father has produced just sits weird with me. And how we are all okay with it. How it’s like oh you just need a Tony award winning producer father to get ahead in this business. I don’t know. I think the show - at least on stage - is boring and repetitive. And the trailer is not my thing.
You didn't see him in the role so you wouldn't know. And his ONLY Broadway credit before DEH was Book of Mormon which his Father had nothing to do with.

While I certainly have my opinions about the believability of Ben Platt as a teenager in the DEH film adaptation, it’s complete ludicrous for someone to discount his work ethic and career by claiming that his success is the result of his father being a producer.
Ben is very, VERY talented & deserving of the accolades and success he has received thus far in his career.
Good for him owning up that it’s his hair and not a wig. Colossal fail for those involved that didn’t see it “reads” like a wig on camera and not try to make it look more realistic. If the mainstream masses are commenting and focusing on his hair, there’s a problem. Wig or real hair - no one should be focusing on it. Period.
Seems the Gen Xers who LOVE the show are truly excited for this.
