I really hated their remake of Rocky Horror (who wouldn't?) but I'm not writing this off yet. Besides the language and probably Contact, I'm sure they'll be just fine with the content. Even though Rocky Horror was terrible, it wasn't overly sanitized and that is quite a bit more questionable as far as content goes. Then add in their spectacular direction of Grease and I'm incredibly interested.
Fox did great with Grease Live. They may do great with this too.
The problem with Rocky Horror was that RHPS is THE cult film of all cult films. Nobody was going to be satisfied with it, no matter what.
While we have two film versions of Rent already, and a third seems unnecessary, I'll still give it a shot. After all, I'm giving a third film version of Bye Bye Birdie a shot this year.

Nope.

Fox NAILED Grease Live!, one of the best live musicals to date. If ANY network is going to do justice to a racier subject matter it's this one. All the others are too Disney-fied.

Wait omg yes please
Yes, yes to Rachel Bloom for either Maureen in Rent (or Miss Shields in A Christmas Story). I doubt if CW/CBS will let her out. I hope both of these FOX specials turn out well.

Except the filmed versions of Birdie span 54 years while Rent will have 3 in 12 years. It just feels like unnecessary overload.

I agree with everything you said. Grease Live! was amazing on Fox. I have high hopes for this one.
i'm cautiously excited for this just because of the exciting possibilities for casting and ensuing cast recording. the idea of Rachel Bloom as Maureen is genius... I'm looking forward to this.
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
A musical about gays, lesbians, cross dressers, strippers, adultery, drug use, cursing, having sex, and AIDs.... on FOX PRIME TIME? Yeeeeah this is basically a dumpster fire waiting to happen.
People couldn't handle the 4 Minute Kinky Boots Tony performance, how do you think they are gonna take 2 and a half hours of everything in this show? I already can see the twitter comments from your average 'Merican viewer cheerin' someone dies from AIDS. They are going to tear the script to bits to make it "network friendly" so what's the point in even picking something they are going to totally change for it's view base? I am putting my money ALREADY that Angel will be cast to a woman like she is in so many high school productions to make it "less controversial" for them.
This might be the first time you get to see the anchors on Fox News Network denouncing the morality of something that their own network put on.

Don't confuse Fox with Fox News. Are you aware of the sort of programming Fox shows on prime-time? On Sundays at that? Watch a few seasons of Family Guy and tell me how cleaned up this will be. Fox doesn't shy away from the controversial topics. The programming on Fox is quite liberal and often risque (remember the near constant barrage of bare butts they gave us on NYPD Blue?). Yes,they will likely have to ditch some of the more obscene language. We will not hear the word sh!t or the 3 F-bombs dropped in the show, but in terms of subject matter, I don't think you have much to fear. Angel will still be a drag queen, we will still have the edgy content and everything else.

While I love Darren and think he's extremely talented, I'd tend to agree that there's not really a role in RENT I can see him fitting, but in general I do take issue with how much hate anyone associate with Glee tends to get on these boards haha. Say what you will of the show itself (even I, as someone for whom the show meant SO much to me, have to admit it got much weaker later on), but many of the cast alum are really genuinely talented.
And how exactly would Ben be boring? He's honestly just the best choice for Mark that I can think of! Who else would be a better choice?
I don't need a life that's normal. That's way too far away. But something next to normal would be okay. Something next to normal is what I'd like to try. Close enough to normal to get by.
I know Darren Criss is a cookie-cutter Glee kid, but you know FOX is going to stunt cast. I could see either him or Adam Lambert again, but Lambert isn't as much of a name anymore. And I love Rachel Bloom, but I feel like Maureen is supposed to be dark and edgy, and Rachel Bloom is the opposite of those things.
First cut at a potential Fox cast - assuming they will have some stuntcasting, some alums, and some Glee alums too. Some of this is taken from other places, some is my own:
Mark: Ben Platt (as mentioned previously) Roger: Aaron Tveit Collins: Oak Angel: Todrick Hall (this one came from Sarah VonEgypt on Facebook) Maureen: Will probably be Lea Michele unless she is locked up with ABC Joanne: Jasmine Cephas Jones Mimi: Naya Rivera Benny: Corey Hawkins
the alums will probably be the voicemail people and maybe Paul
