So sad but not surprised to hear it. I was in the "love it" camp of this show but the writing was on the wall. Who knows but I wish they had waited a season. I think it might have had a chance to be the critical darling musical among shows like Frozen and Escape to Margaritaville next spring.

Well he kept it open for about the same amount of time an A- lister Josh Groban did his musical.
Not really and not nearly with the same kinds of ticket sales. With Josh Groban, Comet ran from October to June with pretty healthy grosses. Groundhog Day began previews in March.
Well I was there tonight and didn't find out until I came home and read this board. If the cast was sad about the news they didn't show it -- the energy. charm and humor from Andy Karl was off the charts and the ensemble has really been tightened. I brought my friend who had resisted seeing this show for a long time and he really enjoyed it.
All in all, a big loss for theatergoers seeking quality shows. I know it's not fair to say this, but there are several inferior shows on Bway that soldier on. No names, of course. Well-shows with one word titles that are synonyms for "female food server" and "lovely"
^ "Waitress" is a pretty excellent show, and even "Beautiful" is pretty great for a jukebox show. Talk about how "A Bronx Tale" is one of the HIT shows of the season?! Like, honestly, da fuq?! I saw it and it's awful. Music sucks. Story sucks. Design sucks. Directing sucks. Just awful. And alas.....
I've seen GHD twice, and I will probably go back before it closes. I've not even seen the money, but I really enjoy what they did with it. I hope it lives on on tour and regionally. And hopefully it will find more interest in London should it return there.
Agree to disagree. I guess. I'm in Brantley's corner on these two shows. He called Beautiful "formulaic"-which I think is generous, actually- and Waitress "unexceptional" and noted that they were both redeemed by Jessie Mueller. I thought GHD was funnier AND more moving -and probably could have bagged some Tonys in a weaker season.
Aw, I love this show so much, I'm sad American audiences didn't get it. I guess Brits just feel more comfortable rooting for an asshole, Americans are a little softer, and I guess tourists from wherever were not interested. Oh well, I will see it again and again and again until it closes. I hope Bill comes back too.

I fully recommend seeing it twice. Especially if you're coming all that way. The show has many beautiful layers to it. See it once from close up and once from the mezz. Best of both worlds.

Bought a front mezz left side seat for the Saturday 9/16 matinee! No hotel or flight yet so I am truly crazy. I only have Friday night and Saturday night open for shows now. Thought about Friday night, but what if my plane is delayed...would love to see it twice but not sure when. Once will be better than not at all.
Andy is such a professional and loves this show so much, he will ABSOLUTELY be there for his show and his cast closing weekend. I look forward to seeing the last show, as sad as it is.
I wouldn't call him "poison," but the lack of any sort of familiar name in this show did kind of hurt it a little bit. I know a lot of people took the attitude of "why should I go see a musical for $200 of a film that I can watch for free on Netflix?" A lot of people felt that they needed a reason to see this show. That, and also the marketing was atrocious.
All this being said, Karl has a fanbase now and has become a bit of a Broadway name. I think he will sell well in the future. I don't think this will hurt his career at all.
Even with all the press he got for GROUNDHOG DAY I can't see ANDY KARL becoming a big box office draw on name recognition alone (the press for GHD didn't exactly, you know, work...) But if he finds the right role in a good word-of-mouth show I think he could finally have his moment... He's earned a lot of love in the community, especially this year, and I can see him winning a TONY on his next try... But as of now his track record does not scream "money"...I wonder if producers will give him a try again...
But when will that be?? Based on interviews I've read and watched he seems kind of over Broadway at the moment, which is understandable given the drama he had with GROUNDHOG and all of his recent flops...

I understand your concern about what if your Friday flight is delayed. Maybe just wait and see what's available at the TKTS booth or at the GHD box office after you land, assuming you land in time to make a show.
I am flying into New York City on Wednesday, November 8. My flight lands at 1 PM and I have tickets to see one of Ben's last shows in Dear Evan Hansen at 8 PM that night. Unless I get horribly delayed I should have no problem making the show. But if you hear on the news of a guy from Oklahoma rushing the cockpit on that day and trying to fly the plane to JFK, you'll know who it is. LOL

I haven't been lucky enough to see a show with Andy Karl, yet. But I'd really like to one day. I don't live in NYC so I either miss the shows he's in or they haven't appealed to me. While he may not be enough of a huge box office draw with name recognition outisde of the Broadway circle, he is a Tony nominated actor and has an excellent working reputation, I believe. I don't think anyone thinks the problem with Rocky and GHD was Andy Karl. If he is open to continuing on Broadway, I think he'll find the right show for him eventually and I think Broadway will continue to employ him, if the role suits him.

For his sake, I really hoped this would make it longer than Rocky, but it's going to fall 8 short. (Previews & Regular performances combined.)

This makes me really sad. Groundhog is a much better show than Rocky. (Both films I adore)
To the poster considering going twice.... I think you're squanderig your time. The show is really cute, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it, but is it worth missing a second show? Not to me.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Unfortunately, this is not surprising. Yesterday morning, before the announcement, I was looking up tickets for the 9/16 matinee and almost all of the mezzanine and a good chunk of the orchestra were still available. I'm also going to see that evening's performance of Bandstand, so I'll have a double dose of Closing Eve.

Don't worry. I would love to see it twice, but probably not in a row. I'm looking at other shows for my other two slots. Since this is a last minute trip, I have no idea what else to see, so might just go over to TKTS when I get there on Friday.

I may be in the minority, but I don't consider shows like this a "flop". Yes, it failed on a financial level, but it was generally well-received by critics and those who saw it, which makes it an artistic success in my book.

They asked how I knew it was closing and I referred them to this site. Can someone please suggest a show for me to purchase a ticket for? Already seeing Miss Saigon. Many thanks."
Come From Away will make you feel good at the end, much like Groundhog Day would've.

The NY TIMES said it would lose most of its $17.5 million investment. To me that is a yuuuge flop...
