It actually skipped several songs, including Little Lamb and Small World... odd

Gotta Get A Gimmick and Wherever We Go are also truncated - generally the beginning beats and then cuts to the end.

And now "Rose's Turn" is the slowest breakdown I've ever heard. Ugh.

hi all

Will continue to look for another easily accessible recording of the complete show

for now the best way to see the complete show now is:

registering for free at

http://hola.org/

and then going to:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour

gets you access (you may need to register at bbc site as well, I did)

Maybe it is because i was 12 when i saw Lupone do GYPSY but i was much more emotionally engaged with Imelda's performance. Again probably because it has been a while but i picked up on much more watching her version than Patti's.

I will say this;   In my opinion her performance borrows heavily from Tyne Daly's exquisite interpretation..

I may have spaced for a minute or been refilling a drink, but I don't think I saw the scene where the hotel manager tries to count all the people in the room and then is accused by Rose of an attempted attack.

I see how (especially in the second act)  Imelda was often described as feral. It seems that each Rose through the years gets increasingly sexy or psycho in "Rose's Turn" (Angela - hearing the applause, Bernadette - upping the sexy, Patti - more sexy, more psycho, Imelda - total devastating breakdown.)

Really enjoyed the actor playing Herbie. But I think my favorite Louise is still Laura Benanti.

It's almost like you know which facial expression she's going to use before SHE does-don't think there is one trick left in that big bag of hers-no thanks-not a fan-perhaps I'm all Gypsied out.

I agree Dame.  I watched four plus minutes and thought, "Tyne's up!  Life's too short!"

I was watching this late last night and after perhaps one scotch too many, I decided to get a nibble of the leftover prime rib in the fridge and cut myself. Of course I posted the pic of my sewn-up finger on facebook, a friend replied that I've always gotta' have a gimmick.  I replied:
You can cut through your digit, if you merely fidget
slicing meat with the beat of the show.
But ya gotta' get two stiches
if you wanna stop the flow!

I couldn't get through it all and after witnessing many versions of this legendary show including the atrocious 1962 Warner Bros. film version, the Tyne Daly led Broadway revival, the merely serviceable 1992 tele-film with La Midler, the Mendes mis-directed, re-conceived atrocity that starred Bernadette Peters and the glorious LuPone led revival that redeemed the show for me from the mess that came before it, I can honestly say I am all "Gypsied" out!

Maybe it can come to BAM for one night and they can sell the house to visiting Chinese dignitaries?

I just wish Imelda would have been directed to show ONE other emotion than ANGER!!! I was so tired of her screaming the dialogue AND the songs for the most part. LOVED Gimmick though.

I am so O'd on Gypsy that there has to be a really good reason for me to see it anytime soon...in fact, the ONLY reason would so the desire to see the next great Rose.

Because it is not live, it will never catch the excitement of a live performance.  Given.  What a recording does do is give me the opportunity to fast forward through parts that I just don't enjoy seeing for the 30th time, e.g., All of the June numbers, Little Lamb, All I need is the Girl, Mr. Goldstone, in particular.  I saw this in about an hour as a result, sorta the greatest hits version, and liked what I saw.

I though Imelda did a fine job.  I never really liked Tyne Daly's performance as much as everyone else because I really didn't like her singing.  Imelda's performance was closest to Tyne's, but she sang the songs extremely well.  I thought her entire scene leading up to and including Rose's Turn was excellent, and represent an interpretation unlike any I can ever remember seeing.

So, I thought she did herself proud, but I still could not see myself buying tickets at this time, this proved yet again how Gypsy'd out I am.  I know it so well that my fast forwarding capability was remarkably acute.

Really didn’t care for Staunton’s overly caffeinated psycho version of mama Rose. It’s like someone told her she had the lead in “Whatever Happened to Baby June”.

I'll agree that I wish she hadn't been so angry in every scene. Rose needs nuance. I'm sure Arthur Laurents would have hated her, especially because she cried before the last scene.

Her "Everything's Coming Up Roses" was divine, as was her entire last 15/20 minutes. THAT was the "Rose's Turn" to end all "Rose's Turn"s. I've never been so moved by that song or that final scene before. However, I do think she missed a lot of the humor. It was she wouldn't hold for the laughs and just kept on going.

I loved the almost scary drag queen quality of the strippers and Lara's voice deepening as she went through her Strip montage. That was a nice touch. The rest was a mixed bag. The quick pace of Act 1 was fine and refreshing, but it missed a lot of laughs that way.

It's weird because I really did think Laurents' last revival was genius in terms of its casting. In fact, it was the first time Herbie and Louise even registered. Patti was Patti and was fine, but it was the supporting players who really surprised me and who I remembered after the curtain fell. I wonder what it would be like to take Imelda's Rose and pair her with Boyd Gaines and Laura Benanti.

Oh, man, this is a performance that was not made for video. Imelda overstated and oversold everything. I cut to the end of it after Some People (I almost stopped there), and her Rose's Turn makes LuPone's look demure. Ugh.

Tyne Daly is still my favorite Rose. I believed her Rose was a real person instead of a show-biz caricature of a stage mother.

would have loved loved loved.... to seen Tyne Daly live as Gypsy or at least a good quality bootleg copy for sure...

Patti's OCR is the one ill be listening to forever

Its very interesting to read other peoples takes on this show who were able to see so many other women take on this role....

I am very grateful that we finally have a high quality pro -shot version of this show for those times

when i need my gypsy fix, because the bette middler and Rosalind Russell versions never did

it for me....
