I was mostly being facetious but somehow I knew somebody would say that
I honestly like Avenue Q better than Wicked but I feel like most people don't
And I also thought it was a very appropriate comparison
I considered comparing Kinky Boots and Matilda or Hedwig and Gentlemen's Guide but I think that Avenue Q and Wicked illustrate my point much better:
Wicked is financially viable and already respected enough that it didn't need a major Tony win to bolster its success
Avenue Q was by a bunch of relatively unknown people with relatively unknown actors and did need the Tonys

To me the best musical of the year (have not seen Illiisnoise or Great Gatsby or Notebook or Outsiders
but to me LEMPICKA was so much better than Suffs or Hell's Kitchen and even Water for Elephantts,
so Lempicka was ROBBED!

I agree. Back to the Future was so well done and so much fun.
And so much better than Hells Ktichen or Suffs.
Id rather sit through that again than Suffs (ugh so preachy and we know women got the vote so where is the drama?)
and Hells Kitchen (like an episode of One Day at a Time with Alicia Keys Music. That being said, Im glad the lead in hells kitchen and Kecia Lewis was nominated. Kecia Lewis was wonderful.

I am not understanding the hate some have for BTTF. I understand that not every one likes a show. I get that. But it seems this show is always at the brunt of jokes from those who do not like more than any other shows. so it is not the dislike of the show it self, but rather the attempts to continue to bring up those options at any time
it reminds me of NFL fans and the Cowboys. You are either like then or you end your comments with “Dallas Sucks” no matter what team is being discussed
I am relatively new Broadway and honestly it was BTTF. that got me to NYC this season.
It is fine to say you don’t like a show when that show is the discussion. But I find it odd that it would get brought up even when that show is not the topic.
Is there always a show a season that becomes the “Cowboys” of the Broadway talk? The one you didn’t like, and you will make sure that everyone knows it even when asked or not?

I don't think it's any personal animus towards the BTTF franchise or the people who work on the show, it's just the fact that the show seems completely born out of cynicism. Every Broadway show tries to make a marketable product that'll turn a profit, but with the assumption that it's done by hiring talented people with a story to tell. BTTF has none of that. It is here because Universal figured that "Back To The Future" on a marquee would put butts in seats.
Maybe there's some young talented composer out there that had a brilliant idea on how to musicalize BTTF, but Universal decided it would be a better idea to just hire the composer of the original film. Maybe there was some visionary director who had incredible plans for the Delorean sequences, but hey, John Rando has experience and he works well with producers.
The focus is never on the art, it's about putting just enough content into the production to convince the average consumer that they didn't waste their money on a ticket.

I agree totally with the above and will add that when there is a movie adaptation that works, the stage actors are not imitating the movie actors and giving exact line readings of the film. Casey Likes is not playing Marty McFly. Casey Likes is playing Michael J Fox playing Marty McFly. Additionally, there was not one song that I remembered 24 hours after seeing BTTF. It just feels like a total money grab much like revival of The Wiz does (but that is another category of bad.)

posted some of this in the other thread but:
Musical: its a shame Here Lies Love, flawed as it was, didnt make the cut. Days of Wine Roses not making the cut surprised me based on the intense love for this show, but I thought it was dull as hell so no love lost here.
Play: Based on what I've heard, it feels somewhat political that Paula Vogel's pedestrian play beat out the toast of London (Patriots)
Musical Revival: I feel bad for Spamalot, because it was such a crowd-pleasing fun time, with sincere effort made to modernize/update the humor and take it in new directions, whereas Tommy was just a rerun.
Play Revival: they went out of their way to say "We really didnt think much of Uncle Vanya or Doubt" right? Given the reviews, seems more of a pointed snub of Doubt.
Actress Play: I havent seen Vanya so maybe I misread the WOM, but I thought Anika Noni Rose was likely to get nominated here. They really seem mad at Vanya huh.
Supporting Actor Play: I would have much preferred to see some Purlie love here (Billy Eugene Jones or even Jay O Sanders), and I was shocked that Will Keen didnt make it (less shocked about Imperioli, but it does suggest some coolness re Enemy compared to other shows).
Supporting Actress Play: Francis Benhamou is The Snub. I am genuinely shocked she didnt make it (she outright won a bunch of awards for this role last year), and her firebrand monologue explosion is what Tony love is usually made of. I cant help but wonder if the ongoing Gaza/hostages nightmare played a role here- her character was overtly political? I cant quite understand it. Especially because Juliana Canfield sdidnt really blow me away, and Quincy Tyler Bernstine was similarly fine but not earthshattering at all. Kinda nuts that Zoe Kazan somehow became the only non-nominee of that cast- i thought she was great. And NO women from Jaja?? But really leaving out Francis makes no sense to me, at all, full stop.
Actor Musical: Of course I would have loved to have seen Chip Zien finally recognized for a storied career, but the writing in Harmony was so bad, it was hard to take him seriously.
Supporting Actor Musical: Paul Alexander Nolan probably seems the other overly egregious oversight. Lotta griping about Roger Bart--i havent seen BTTF but it strikes me as pretty normal for them to nominate the showiest role out of that show---its Sky Dakota Lynch and Brendan Victor Dixon who seem to have snuck in due to love for their shows more than anything theyre actually doing on stage. Nolan is sublime.
Supporting Actress Musical: Nikki James is doing great work in Suffs, but its wild that shes the only nominee from this overstacked cast of talent. Collela missing out seems odd, but hard to think of her as snubbed given the other ladies in this category.

Can a show be considered a cash grab when it has taken over a decade to reach the stage? Also, I believe all the big decisions about BTTF were down to Bob Gale rather than Universal. If he and Silvestri are very good friends then it stands to reason that Bob would want him on board.
Anyway, just as #FilmTwitter is a tiny microcosm of people compared to the film going public at large and their opinions rarely hold sway in the 'real world', the way some people here look down their noses at certain shows bears little reflection with the outside world.

I found this article on the Playbill website to be interesting. Ingrid Michaelson feels that she was snubbed. I haven't seen The Notebook, but from what I heard, the score isn't that remarkable. I find it interesting that some people feel that they deserve a Tony nomination simply by showing up. Yes, not getting a nomination is disappointing when someone puts so much of their life into creating art, but I wonder about what seems to be a sense of entitlement.

Actually, I feel for some of these performers. It’s some of the critics on this board responsible for alot of the mayhem on Broadway. Miserable Mary’s!
