casting for a reading is so not important here...it's the fact that the movie version of INTO THE WOODS will be made!..i am soooooooo excited and i think this movie version could do a hell of alot better than tim burtons overly-dark (and i do mean the look for the movie, not the cast) SWEENEY TODD...(which by the way did very good business world wide)
finally a new SONDHEIM project to hopefully see in the not to distant future...and i LOVE MERYL STREEP for the witch...the woman can do anthing!
And that's not going to change until they start dubbing actors, like they done since day 1.
The problem with that is you can't hide it anymore.
While, I'm sure a lot of people were able to guess that actors in the heyday of movie musicals were dubbed, there was no Internet to offer any evidence or spread rumors about that.
Some audience members were able to look past the fact that it wasn't the actor/actress doing their own singing. I'm sure that still holds true today but I feel like the vast majority would judge whomever is being dubbed as not being right for the part.
Why should the Hollywood actors and actresses get that crutch? It's certainly not that way on Broadway. If you have an A-list star come in to do a Broadway musical, no one is standing off-stage singing for them while they mouth the words. Yes, keys may be lowered and tempos may be changed to suit that person, but at least they're giving an entire performance.
Personally, if I was seeing a movie musical and I knew one of the leads was lip synching to another person's voice...I would find the performance to be less than genuine.
And, I certainly don't think voters on Awards committees would even consider those actors/actresses. I think a lot of actors know this. Hopefully they're not taking parts simply for the chance at an award but I'm sure it's in the back of their mind.
That's why I feel like it takes a serious amount of convincing to get big names into these films. Some of them may want to do it but they feel they're not a good enough singer/dancer/what have you. They know if they are dubbed it won't be able to be kept a secret and they want to spare themselves the media judgement that they simply weren't up to par for the role altogether.
I believe that's why a great deal of them choose not to do it. They don't feel it's worth the risk.
"I love talking about nothing. It is the only thing I know anything about." - Oscar Wilde
I hate when films dubb. It totally takes me out of the moment.I could be listening to "On the steps of the palace" and be totally in the moment but than realize it's not her singing and than I would totally be taken out of the the moment and song.
Why would you cast someone in a musical that could not sing the part?? does not make any sense! They dont have the requirements for the role,so why should they be cast? That is exactly why Hepburn did not get her Oscar Nomination for MY FAIR LADY,because she couldnt SING the part -_-. If they are going to cast celebrities in Movie Musicals than they should probally know how to sing,or else whats the freaking point??Thank god Les Mis is doing it right...
I don't believe for a second there aren't enough singing actors to cast in movie musicals...the problem is there aren't enough popular enough ones to get financing from all the overseas investors. That's why the same familiar names get cast. Believe me, you'd instantly get 20 million in the kitty instantly if you somehow found a way to shoehorn Jason Statham in this thing.
"Hey little girls, look at all the men in shiny shirts and no wives!" - Jackie Hoffman, Xanadu, 19 Feb 2008
Streep will be perfect as the Witch, the role fits her incredibly well (more than say, Violet Weston in AUGUST: OC). However, I did think that Catherine Zeta-Jones would be fantastic. Not really sure what makes Cruz so wrong for the role of the Witch apart from the fact her first language isn't English, which is all the evidence some of you have provided. Collette needs to be in a movie musical already! I agree. Whatever happened to the musical film adaptation of the BILLY ELLIOT? She needs to play Mrs.Wilkinson already. Love this cast so so much! Anna Kendrick has to play Cinderella. Wouldn't mind Arianda as the Baker's Wife, but I was hoping for Collette or even Winslet.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
One thing: you better believe that some of these actors who are big in the theater would take small parts in this kind of film...for both career and money reasons.
The one big exception for me is Hilty, who's sung so much on a network TV show that this wouldn't really do anything for her.
I wish Anna Kendrick was playing Little Red...she'd be a hoot. And she still looks awfully young.
Just no Anne Hathaway, please...give us a break from her for a minute.
hyperbole_and_a_half, Collette is in no way too old for The Baker's Wife. The character is a woman struggling with her ability to conceive a child, and even though part of that is related to the curse within the story, I think it adds a lot of gravitas to the relationship between The Baker and The Baker's Wife if you're given the impression they've been trying to have a baby for quite some time, the effects of which have gradually strained their marriage.
Besides, Collette is only 39 (and looks incredible.)
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
Meryl would be too old on stage, on film notsomuch. They WON'T dub in her singing voice. Her reupation (ego, to be mean) would be damaged. She can sing well enough, and the magic of electronics can do the rest. Vocal challenges on stage can be minimized and ovecome more easily on film.
"Through The Sacrifice You Made, We Can't Believe The Price You Paid..For Love!"
If she agrees to accept the part, The Witch will most probably be Meryl Streep (rumor has it that Sondheim personally called her and asked her to play the role at the Delacorte). She is a brilliant actor who can do anything and her last seven films have had over $1.5 billion in worldwide grosses (and yes, that does matter). And as far as being too old, she has a genius, Oscar-winning hair and make-up artist named Roy Helland.
If Les Mis works, there's going to be an expectation that ITW be shot the same way, so they're going to need singers. I can't see many of the reading cast, as good as they are, making it through to the film, this many parts sort of screams lots of big names to me. Corden is inspired though. Anna Kendrick is interesting. I'm amazed Amy Admas name hasn't been thrown around with the film. I'm not saying she should play the role, but surely, you think she'd be in consideration.
Even before I read it earlier in this thread I felt that Steve Carell would be great as the Baker.
"Carson has combined his passion for helping children with his love for one of Cincinnati's favorite past times - cornhole - to create a unique and exciting event perfect for a corporate outing, entertaining clients or family fun."
There is such a thing as overexposure. And Meryl is overexposed. I'm sick and tired of her in everything. I can't say I am partial to her singing voice either. I think she's a great actress, but she's not the only talented actress out there. Surely, someone else can do this.
I don't think it's boring. She's so right for the role... Her "Stay With Me" is going to be amazing. People have been wanting her to come to Broadway, and musicals, for years. I was one of the many who were devastated that she didn't get SWEENEY. Meryl FINALLY in a Sondheim piece! What is there to complain about? That she's not singing ABBA??
I love Anna Kendrick, and she'll be a great Cinderella - but I totally thought of her for Little Red. Either way, she'd be brilliant.
I've been wanting to see Toni Collette as The Baker's Wife for years now. I really hope it happens, but it most likely won't...
I know that this is an odd request - but I'd personally love to see Zach Galifianakis as The Baker. While Zach has been type cast lately as playing a zany man-child, he's truly a smart, passionate actor. You can see it in his film, It's Kind of a Funny Story. And he certainly has the voice to handle the Baker's songs.
Also, I'd love Nathan Lane in there, as Cinderella's Father or (preferably) the Mysterious Man. As Cinderella's Father, it would be fun to see him and Christine together... but also a bit of a waste, given his talents and name recognition.
