This is more like it NBC! A really solid live musical for television right here, Carrie sang the role nicley even if her acting got really stiff which is a nice start compared to her co-star. Audra, Laura, the children, and Christian did really good.
The sets by Derek Mclane were beautiful, the choreography by Rob Ashford was shockingly decent, just about everything was really well done. I'm glad that a live musical for television, done the old fashioned way is still a thing.
Is it as good as Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella from 1957? No, but this presentation of The Sound of Music was a nice, solid B in my book. :)

Yeah. Because Laura Benanti could really sell a multi-million dollar broadcast on national television....
Saw this on Lin-Manuel Miranda's twitter:

HA!
Just started here on the west coast. Audra McDonald can do anything. She is magic.

Thank you NBC. I am sure you learned a lot but I really hope you do this again some time soon. This was a brave attempt by you and by your two leads who are not Broadway trained.. and I hope you get amazing ratings.
And thanks to the other posters here for the fun in sharing this tonight. : )

Huey's Pop, please report back to us if an extra steps on Laura Benanti's dress and toward the end when the men come for Captain Von Trapp if the actor steps on Von Trapp's lines. These were the two mistakes that prove it was a live broadcast and I'd like to know if they fix them before the west coast broadcast.

Goth, it was a live broadcast. Without any doubt. I was just texting with several former colleagues who worked on tonight's broadcast.

When watching the east coast feed, I wasn't impressed with Carrie's acting. I realized Julie's performance is so ingrained in my head, I can hear how Julie would deliver the lines. Upon watching the west coast feed, I was able to appreciate Carrie's performance more. Perfect? Hardly. But it's not bad considering she carries the weight of the program on her shoulders.
The West Coast broadcast began at 5 p.m. if I read the article correctly, so it was the same broadcast
"Had high hopes for this, but it really felt like community theater with a big budget. "
Um even if that's so. That's more theatre than Americans get yearly.
This was AWESOME. Check Deadline.com tomorrow. This was a SMASH.
This was that thing people chatted about, and then DID and with social media made it and EVENT. NBC is popping champagne right now!!!
Perfect or not, this is what we want and this was AWESOME TV.

Liza, I never doubted it was a live broadcast. I'm just interested in knowing if they correct these two mistakes for the west coast broadcast.
If Hello Dolly becomes a live musical production after this one, I would be a happy camper.
If NBC does a live musical adaption for mature audiences in a few years, introducing HAIR to this generation would be incredible.
...without the nudity though.
I was in and out of it, impatiently waiting for the next musical number. Carrie Underwood sang the songs very nicely. And then she started acting...
Happy everyone else is happy, though.

All of you are funny with your Hello Dolly. You know next year it's going to be Annie.
I think if they did Mame, Benanti would be an AMAZING Vera.
This was so much fun. It turned out to be so much better than I expected.
Thanks to NBC!!! I also felt that the length and frequency of the commercial breaks acceptable.
Yes,yes, yes to Hello Dolly next year.

I love the people on Twitter saying they don't understand why they would "bastardize" a classic by "adding new songs."
It was exactly what I anticipated. Carrie can't act, Audra and the other Broadway vets killed it, the sets were lovely, Stephen Moyer's singing was...hit or miss, and it was perfectly respectable if not necessary or exciting in any way. Except "Climb Ev'ry Mountain." I also loved the transitions between scenes/sets, like when Maria leaves the house to go back to the Abbey or when the set changed from the house to the concert hall. Thought those were surprisingly smooth and theatrical without being jarring. I'd give it a B-, I guess. It'd be exciting if they aired more live musical productions like this, maybe every Holiday season or something.
I more or less enjoyed it and the three hours went by fast, but I was hardly bowled over. Glad most of you seem to have a more positive view though!

Yeah, NBC will be doing this again next year. This was the ONLY thing people were talking about tonight. just a matter of what show and with whom.

This summer NBC presents live 1776 with Stephen Moyer as John Adams, Carrie Underwood as Abigail Adams and Billy Joel as Ben Franklin.

The west coast broadcast began at 5? Um, considering I'm in the west coast, it definitely began at 8. Yes, it's the same broadcast but it definitely didn't air the same time. Do-re-mi just ended in the west coast.
NBC will be doing this again!!! It's gonna be big numbers!
We just need to tell them what shows we want to see! (FAMILY FRIENDLY!!!!!!!!!)
Bad. Embarrassingly bad. I can't remember a worse performance than Underwood's.
