Who got bumped?  Probably 6 people who had hopes of getting in from the Cancellation  Line.

Lol!  I'm not crying.  I saw the show 6 times and not via the cancellation line.  But like the many hopeful who do the line, that's 6 less tickets that go towards anyone who waited.  That's all...

Carry on...

And my butt will occupy seats again in 2017 =)

Because we all work hard in this country to enjoy things life has to offer. And many of us are here for the love of theater.

Kenickie, you answer quick!  I spell corrected my message and you still got my mistake.

"Carey" on...

Heaven-forbid we allow someone we may disagree with to enjoy a night at the theater.  It is an absolute safe bet that there were others in the audience who went to the show hoping to escape from the vitriol of the previous 18 months - - and were not pleased to have politics intrude into their night-out.

And preaching from the stage to an audience member is not a "conversation."  Nor should this industry be seeking to make the relationship between audience and cast a "conversation."

Wait. So theater shouldn't be a conversation between the actor and audience? Wow! I guess artists have been getting it wrong for thousands of years! I'll just rip up my MFA and forget why I got into the arts in the first place! Thanks!

Why are you putting conversation in quotes? I didn't call it that. And it's their show, if they want to make an announcement afterwards they can. Are you offended by the Broadway Cares pitches? Some people don't appreciate paying a ton of money for seats and then hit up for more money

"#boycotthamilton is the number one trend on twitter right now."

Good. Hubris gets its just desserts.

That's gratifying to see.

But does anyone think we'll now see a toning down of the self-righteous, self-satisfied, self-serving sermonizing we've had to endure since the day the show opened? Or that the show's fawning media admirers will hype it less? I would say there's about a snowball's chance in hell of that happening. If anything, we can expect the sanctimony to be ratcheted up even more, if that is even possible.

A cheery prospect, n'est-ce pas?

"So theater shouldn't be a conversation between the actor and audience?"

A lecture is not a conversation. Nor is a sermon, a tongue-lashing, or a harangue.  It's a one-way street. The actor does all the talking, and the captive audience has to sit there without any chance to rebut what it hears.

That's no conversation. Rather it's a stacked deck, with the audience as patsies.

I agree that what happened on stage was not a "conversation," but I do think it is acceptable that it took place because it was not "harassment" or an "attack."  Everyone needs to consider the words they choose, including the almost president of the United States.

Mr. Trump and Mr. Pence now have a worldwide platform that they can use to express their beliefs and opinions.  In that moment last night, the actors/creatives behind Hamilton took their brief moment to do the same, while appealing to the vice president in a respectful way.  It was after the show concluded, so if anyone disagreed, they were free to leave.  There was nothing wrong with what happened on that stage.

Context.

Acting is a metaphorical "conversation" between actors and audience.

But calling out a specific member of the audience / directing an extemporaneous off-script message to that audience member as he or she is leaving the theater?  I'm not especially interested in that becoming a common occurance.  And I'm even less interested in audience members initiating their own dialogue with the cast.  It's just not the time or place.  Appropriate feedback given generously seems more appropriate.

There are endless forums to express one's personal views about any number of subjects.  It's just not - to me - a great idea to bring that into the theater.  This isn't about ideology.  It's about decorum.

The cast message to Pence was just so inappropriate!  The cast should have only made any type of announcement if Pence had stood up and made racist remarks which he never would have done.  The cast should issue an apology to the Vice President Elect.

"But calling out a specific member of the audience / directing an extemporaneous off-script message to that audience member as he or she is leaving the theater?"

It wasn't extemporaneous, because it was clearly prepared in advance. What it was was both a set-up and a sucker punch. Neither one is either appropriate or honorable.

Our country is founded upon revolution and standing up for what one believes in.  As I mentioned above, I don't think there is wrong with voicing an opinion, as long as it's done respectfully.  And it was.  Clearly we will all have differences of opinion on this and it only highlights the dissension in our country at the moment.  I worry for us in these "united" states.

It is disconcerting to see how many of you value the concepts of respect and decorum even when the person in question has caused tangible harm to thousands of people. Pence didn't bother to fund STD treatment programs in his state because he thinks gay people are immoral, and he actually caused an HIV outbreak in 2015 because of it. A man who does vile things does not deserve anyone's respect- he deserves scorn and ridicule. Showing him unearned respect won't keep him from hurting people. Rebuking him and his ideas will.

Also, LOL at all the people clutching their pearls that the theatre was used for a (incredibly mild) political statement. Y'all know that theatre is a literal extension of politics, yes?

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

"

From the NY Times http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/19/us/mike-pence-hamilton.html?smid=fb-nytimes&smtyp=cur&_r=0 :

The statement that Mr. Dixon read was written by the show’s creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda; its director, Thomas Kail; and the lead producer, Jeffrey Seller, with input from cast members, Mr. Seller said.

“We had to ask ourselves, how do we cope with this?” Mr. Seller said. “Our cast could barely go on stage the day after the election. The election was painful and crushing to all of us here. We all struggled with what was the appropriate and respectful and proper response. We are honored that Mr. Pence attended the show, and we had to use this opportunity to express our feelings.”

Mr. Seller said that there was some discussion about whether it was appropriate to inject a political statement into the night, and that those involved decided to wait until the end of the performance. He said no cast members had skipped the performance to protest Mr. Pence’s appearance.
