People have always and will always react differently. Do certain attitudes irk me? Of course. I'm sure I rub people the wrong way sometimes, too.
(I am talking about the posters, here. Not the obnoxious fans.)

"For fans of Follies if you don't get it then your too dumb or not evolved enough to 'get' the work."
LOL- I had to stop reading right there. Before you start calling people too dumb or not evolved enough, try using the correct "you're" when doing so, dummy.
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.
Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!
Easily the Sondheimites. He's a genius, but so many of his fans are pretentious douchebags who consider themselves intellects because they enjoy listening to "smart" music. They put others down to make themselves feel superior - and they judge people based on their tastes, which absolutely sucks. (ex; my favorite scores are Children of Eden, Spring Awakening, Legally Blonde, and Sunday in the Park with George. Judge away, bitches.)
And it's a shame, too - theatre is such an incredibly beautiful art form, yet the fans insist on making it this catty, awful place where opinions go to die.
^ Honestly, anything can be turned into that and has. I love theater, but I also visit message boards and websites for other interests. People can be disrespectful to one another if they have different opinions, and it is really sad. I'm getting tired of it too. I've come to realize I just don't like specific people and it should be no reflection of everyone who like or does not like something.

Oh, of course - that's a given. I bring up Sondheim fans because a select group of them (on these boards and people I've worked with) have been the most consistently 'superior' and egotistical fans I've ever witnessed, on any message board.

^yes, PalJoey, miles worse than anything I've ever posted on these boards. If you're taking offense to what I wrote - well, I wasn't including you in that statement because you've tended to be one of the more even-minded posters on these boards, but that's on you.
DEClarke beat me to it! How can we forget Clay Aiken??? You couldn't critique his performance without a backlash from the bored, without-lives-of-their-own housewives known as his fans. Then when discussing his then-rumored homosexuality they lashed out with every ton of their being against you...then magically disappeared when he "came out."
If you're taking offense to what I wrote - well, I wasn't including you in that statement because you've tended to be one of the more even-minded posters on these boards, but that's on you.
Yes, I take offense when you and emlodik call other posters on this board "douchebags," "fag hags" and "queens."
And what I'm trying to explain to you is that it only makes you look bad. It has no validity as a discussion point or argument.
We all know the people of whom you are speaking, but as soon as you call them the lowly names you just did, that puts you on their level -- no better, no worse. Exactly the same. It's still you thinking you're better than they are.

The only time I truly get offended is the attitude that to enjoy a show that was created purely for entertainment somehow makes you inferior and ignorant or that those types of shows aren’t “worthy” of being on Broadway. It’s completely illogical, not just in theory, but from a historical perspective. Is it always “or”? Is it never “and”?
"What can you expect from a bunch of seitan worshippers?" - Reginald Tresilian
I actually started to hate those shows/performers MORE because of the fans. They're ignorant, narrow minded, pompous and just completely emotionally retarded in general. Anyone else feels that way?
Wow... that must be the most narrow minded post I ever saw here. I admit that I haven't been here for very long though...
I find it very insulting. I don't consider myself any of these things (certainly not ignorant and narrow minded) and I am a big fan of Glee. I think it's sad when people make assumptions on fanbases just because there are some intense fans who may have obnoxious behaviors. The fact is, this happens in all the big fanbases. This minority of obnoxious fans don't represent the fanbase, you know?
To me, generalizing like you just did is what would be considered narrow minded and honestly, even if I don't like Wicked, Patti LuPone and lots of other stuff that are very popular, I much prefer hearing/reading about people's admiration for it then seeing people complain and insult other people for loving something. Just my two cents...
And that's almost my point exactly. For fans of Follies if you don't get it then you're too dumb or not evolved enough to 'get' the work
By 'get' do we mean understand or appreciate? I think that if you do not like FOLLIES it does not mean you're dumb. BUT, I do think there are some people (not all) who are not capable of understanding the show, which in turn makes it hard to take their opinion of the show seriously because their opinion is uninformed. In other words, there is nothing wrong in my opinion with disliking FOLLIES if you understand it, but there is something wrong with disliking it if you don't understand it.
For example, there was a post about the recent revival on ATC when it was running who said that "In Buddy's Eyes came out of no where" and that Sally was " so cold to Buddy" until this apparent love song. Clearly they missed the point of the song and the subtext that Sally is actually very unhappy with Buddy.
Why did they overlook this? Well, it could be that
1. The concept was not able to be conveyed successfully by deficiencies in writing, directing, acting etc.
2. The person lacked the ability to understand the concept of subtext either because of a lapse in attention, or lacking prerequisite knowledge of 'something' (e.g. a certain understanding of how songs can tell a story) that would allow them to understand.
I am sure that while 1. is often an issue, there are people who also fall to 2.
Before I go on, I think that we can surely accept based on the countless "Wicked fan" or "Glee fan" posts in this thread that some musical fans lack knowledge. The cliché Wicked fan who says Wicked is the "best musical of all time" clearly has an uninformed opinion because it seems unlikely they are familiar with all (or enough) musicals to make this judgement..
Similarly, I think that there could be some kind of knowledge required to understand certain concepts, more complicated concepts that are explored in some shows but not others. If someone has little understanding of what 'subtext' is and is only familiar with shows that do not explore the concept at all, it might seem obvious why they might find it difficult to understand aspects of FOLLIES. In this case, it is hard to take an opinion (e.g. FOLLIES is a poorly written show) seriously the same way a WICKED fan might say WICKED is the best musical of all time because it is uninformed.
I will point out as mentioned that it is so hypocritical for people to complain that Sondheim fans are pretentious and then look down upon Wicked or Glee fans. If people who look down on the knowledge of WICKED or GLEE fans are not pretentious, why are Sondheim fans who sometimes look down on the knowledge of other people pretentious?
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I think this thread is making a mountain out of a molehill.
I've asked this question before and I'm asking it again- why does it bother you if someone doesn't share your opinion? I couldn't care less who likes what.
