So...Anyone who likes a show is a good person, but anyone who dislikes a show is a bad person. Got it.

Behind the fake tinsel of Broadway is real tinsel.

I'm trying to avoid the negativity on these threads. Especially, after what happened on the Bad Cinderella Thread from Opening Night. I already have a lot of negative BS in my life. I don't need any more of it!

If you go to the official site, the tickets are $79.  I imagine the fees are going to be less than $22, and you’ll know your exact seat.

when I was young, I sat in the second balcony countless times.  I saw Hello Dolly the first time from the last row center, and absolutely loved the show, so the seats can’t be that bad.  I would go for seats 1 or 3 right off the center aisle.  I definitely remember people leaning forward more than any theatre I have been in…side aisle seats remedy that issue.

to second someone else’s comments, it is a real trek up to the balcony, so faint of heart should stay away.

Just watched. I wanna see that street sign IRL! Kander is too cute.

The sign has already been taken down. I was in the city today and walked down 44th just to see it and it was gone.

Spoilers ahead if you don't want to know about what's included in the score:

Included in "New York, New York" first preview:

"Marry Me" from "The Rink"

"A Quiet Thing" from "Flora, the Red Menace"

"Let's Hear It for Me" from "Funny Lady"

The melody of "Walking Among My Yesterdays" from "The Happy Time," fitted out with a completely new lyric

The melody of "Sometimes a Day Goes By" from "Woman of the Year," played briefly by the violinist character.

At 1 hour 40 minutes, (which has been reported by several people, so I don't think the 90 minutes reported here is correct), the first act is not slightly too long. You have to have a VERY engaging first act to be anywhere over 1:20."

Yeah I agree the 1st act was too long/too much exposition, but the music and dancing acts I think were enough to carry the day - things like the tap dancing, Angel's first song (Pure Gold? the YouTube channel indicated that LMM wrote that one and Angel's performance of that one was so good), the doo doo doo da doo song being super catchy with the Trumpet player, I thought all moved things alongside the main plot between Colton and Anna to build up to a superb 2nd act which brought everything together with hit after hit song, sans the Polish character that I think could be cut (despite him being probably the best technical singer in the cast).. I'd think they'll probably work to get 1st act to the 1:30 mark since that's what's advertised, anyways?.

Do I understand correctly that a minority of the score is original to this production--either written for it or never-before-seen Kander and Ebb trunk? And the majority is Kander and Ebb catalog?

There are a few songs that are clearly LMM/LMM+Kander - Cheering for me Now, Pure Gold, Music Money Love, etc (sorry don't know the actual song titles, just remembering from the show). I got really lucky and bought a ticket on Wednesday that was a released House Seat it turned out, which put me two spots from John Kander and his team (who signed my playbil, probably the most exciting Broadway moment I've ever had as someone who doesn't ask anyone for signatures!)... and it seemed from their discussion and the quesitons I asked them it was an overall collaboration between Kander and LMM inspired by Ebb and many pieces from the K&E catalogue, to which LMM would never ever take credit beyond "additional lyrics by" out of respect for Fred Ebb. It definitely drew on things people already knew, I think someone listed a few of those songs earlier, alongside on-stage references to things like In the Heights w/ the shaved ice man in scene 2. I think the score was fantastic and showcased 3 Broadway legends well, the exception being  the slow Colton Ryan song on an execution basis (voice just didn't seem to fit the song.

Thanks. And happy to hear you had such a lovely encounter with John Kander, who may be the nicest man in show business. I've never heard an unkind word about him.

It's a shame, the Colton Ryan ballad is actually one of my favorite lesser-known Kander and Ebb songs so I was excited to see it included.  But agree, I didn't love his version and it didn't seem to be a a great fit for his voice (unlike the rest of the score, which I thought fit him beautifully).  The song was "A Quiet Thing."

Oh NO NO, I wasn't referring to you at all Sutton. It was the person before who said I "only read what I want to read". I appreciated your input on the seating. Sorry for the mixup there.

Lerner and Loewe used to call people who travelled to New Haven to see a show in previews (and for various reasons, hoping it would flop) "Dear SH*Ts."

There are different types of street renaming ceremonies in NYC:

1) Temporary honorifics for a day. They are arranged by publicists in collab with the city. Like proclaiming a "André De Shields Day," or giving someone the key to a city. Other shows have used this as a press stunt, too (Sheldon Harnick Way or Tom Sawyer Way). This is what Kander had.

2) Permanent "co-name" for a street -- enacted by petition to the local community Board, approved by City Council, and ultimately signed in by the Mayor, which Signature Theatre spearheaded last year for Jim Houghton. Those usually get a smaller permanent sign underneath the actual street name. Leonard Bernstein Place, W.E.B. DuBois Ave, Wynn Handman Way, etc.

I guess it's safe to say we won't be seeing Flora, The Rink, or Woman of the Year anytime soon. I know so many are depressed by this news.

(On a less sarcastic note I would've loved a Woman of the Year presentation at Encores)

Climbing up there is a nightmare. It wasn't just the stairs but I had to cross the theater multiple times for some reason. The view is okay unless someone leans forward. If everyone sits back like they're supposed to, you can see fine.

Just got home from tonight’s second performance.  My quick thoughts:

  • Act 1 does just have too much going on and was not that engaging but the dancing and design elements were terrific.  Performances were solid.  Honestly though I was underwhelmed by the tap number.
  • Act 2 was pretty darn good when the story became more focused.
  • The last 15 minutes of this show are absolutely ****ing great.  I don’t want to spoil anything but … wow.

Good luck to the creatives as they work on the show - this is far, far from a disaster.

This shouldn’t have any bearing on the future of WOMAN OF THE YEAR or FLORA (which would both be ideal Encores shows) or any other K&E titles.

Not to invoke a cursed thing, but PETER PAN on NBC did a similar thing, with Amanda Green rewriting some DO RE MI songs to fit into that. How many different shows have featured Someone to Watch Over Me or Blue Skies?
