“In the interview, de Blasio specified that Broadway itself is aiming for a September full reopening, though smaller shows could reopen at 100 percent capacity earlier in the summer. "Broadway takes time because they have to mount a whole production," he said. "You should expect Broadway, full strength, in September, but I'd love to see some of the smaller shows up in July and August."
All depends on the CDC's guidelines and what AEA can work out safely.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
Curious as to what this means for Broadway - with most shows already having announced or planning for fall reopenings, I doubt many will be ready to meet this earlier date.
None of what he says changes the fact that AEA and the Broadway League still have to get over themselves and work together to get people back to work before this can happen. Could some shows reopen in August? Absolutely. Will they? Absolutely not.
Let's recall that DeBlasio has zero say in when things reopen or expand, and if past is prologue, whatever he says will be wrong (because Cuomo will make sure of that even if the unions didn't). Also, this "fully reopen" "full strength" in September stuff is sheer nonsense and is wholly absurd. Typical DeBlasio and terrible management of expectations although of course he has nothing to lose since he will be in the rear view mirror by then...
He clearly states July 1 is for stores, restaurants, etc. Details TBA which will of course include masks at all times, etc. He mentioned Broadway can start up around September.

Agreed!
I take everything DeBlaaahsio says with a grain of salt. I’m sure any day now we’ll get Charlotte St. Martin’s statement

This July 1 does not imply Broadway."
He used the word “theatres” in his statement regarding the July 1st date, which is why it seems newsworthy for this site.
Anything on Morning Joe is newsworthy and it is certainly possible that the 100% capacity in theatres could happen by 7/1 but De Blasio is clueless. We are talking about someone who thought showing his face at Perfect Crime was a good idea. Maybe that's where he heard this. lol
Just as Biden unfortunately cannot do everything he wants just by announcing it, De Blasio can't and in fact has 2 major roadblocks to any "power" on this topic.
Thanks for posting this! Saw the headline but you saved a click from seeing what it says about Broadway. This is exciting! Hopefully it works out and can stay open. I know from the Deadline Company series that Patti LuPone felt October was too soon.. (pasting Patti's quote below) so hopefully those expectations readjust and October can work out.
We were sent an email from our general manager the other day saying we were going into rehearsal in September and then opening in October. And I thought, I don’t think so. I don’t think that’s going to happen. I guess what I’m saying is: Stop. Wait until we know we’re going to open before we keep getting these emails. It’s depressing when it doesn’t happen.
I personally don’t think that Company should come back in the Fall. I think that we should let the big guns open and let them work out all the kinks. You know, Wicked, Hamilton, Lion King, the ones that have been running, that have paid off and are in larger houses and can afford to play to a quarter or half a house. Let them lead the charge, and then let’s see what happens.
Now what is the progress on the new Jujamcyn Theaters tech that lets you order a drink to your seat at intermission....
Jordan Catalano said: "Yeah the whole ordering drinks at the seat thing means everyone is gonna have to play “pass the snack” for 15 minutes back and forth. Not a fan."
haha yikes I didn't think of that.. I have been too focused on how I can go to the bathroom and receive the drink
We still have to wait and see what Albany says. Deblasio said,
“Federal government, state government always have a say,” de Blasio said. “But I’m saying as leader of New York City, we’re ready to come back and come back strong.”
The 11:00 news said we will see if Cuomo addresses it this afternoon.

I liked the attitudes of my high school's cheerleaders too. But I don't think these clueless cheerleaders (and I throw St. Martin in that pile) are a good thing. It's expectations management. People hear what he said on national TV and make plans. Then those things don't happen, and people are angry and alienated. Ask any parent.
