It’s called nuance. There is a HUGE difference between someone’s actions being of their own volition and actions that are influenced by psychiatric or substance abuse issues.

I’ve been punched in the face at work by many patients. I am more forgiving of those who lack the faculties to have control over their actions (chronic illness, withdrawal) over those who are looking to flex and assert themselves and know exactly what they are doing.

The behavior is still not appropriate regardless, but where it comes from affects how you respond to it it.
