Oh Mary Tour - REVIEW!!

Natalie Joy Johnson was really, really great last night! Hers is a very grounded, physically confident and realistic Mary that played up the role's emotional throughline. On her second performance, she was still finding the timing in some of the more complex physical comedy bits such as the opening and the desk dismount, but the cabaret section was hysterical, the audition was great, and the "Great Day" monologue was performed beautifully. San Francisco is in very safe hands until Alaska is over her illness!

A shout out as well to Wesley Taylor, an absolutely hysterical Teacher - I loved the cocky Raul Esparza thing he was doing in the acting lesson scenes. This was a less naive version of the character that I really liked - the Broadway company better snap him up after Foa leaves. John Andrew Morrison who's Lincoln has grown tremendously in specificity and power in the year since I last saw him opposite Jane Krakowski.

Hoping SF announces some additional rush tickets so I can go back and see it once Alaska returns so I can compare, but I was very happy with the show last night.

Re: Oh Mary Tour

Ghee announced they will not be returning to the tour due to health reasons.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I'm sorry to hear this and wish J the best. As someone with a family member who lives with chronic kidney disease, I've seen first-hand how challenging this condition can be.

The idea of having one actor begin as Mary's Husband and then transition to Mary is still a fabulous one -- and I hope some production realizes it at one point. It will be interesting to see who they recruit for the second leg of this tour: a veteran Mary or a new face.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Re: Oh Mary Tour

Since the tour will run another year, I hope Ghee gets to play the role at some point. Whether on tour or on Broadway.

I had the exact same thought. When I heard about the extension, I had a feeling something like this might happen - but I’m choosing to take it as a sign that the top hat and/or bratty curls will be ready when they are.

Re: Oh Mary Tour

Such a bummer, and seems unlikely Alaska can extend due to her own tour kicking off very shortly after her stint as Mary is scheduled to end.

I wonder who will be taking over. Maybe bump Natalie up full time and get a new swing/understudy?

I only really know Natalie Joy Johnson from "Legally Blonde" I've listened to that cast recording and have watched the MTV production numerous times. It's a fun show to have playing while out on a run. Her "Enid Hoopes!" during "The Harvard Variations" is a vocal stem of mine. I haven't really followed her since the show and with the casting announcement decided to re-familiarize myself with her and what she's been up to. I'm kind of obsessed with her at the moment. She kind of fits into this role perfectly. I would love to see her interpretation.

I wonder if they could get Jinx or Mason to do the tour.

I mean, speaking of Jinkx could we get BenDeLaCreme to play Mary?

DeLa is not a Mary. There is a zero perfect chance she'd shove needles into someone's eyes. She'd make an EXCELLENT Louise, but I also doubt she'd want to play 2nd fiddle to Jinkx since their other works have been a true equal partnership.

DeLa is a great actress in the vein that fits the piece and I'd love to see her in either role for sure, I just don't see it happening.

Re: Oh Mary Tour

DeLa’s drag persona is quite different than Mary but she is an incredible and versatile performer who could milk so much out of the role

No, she missed two performances and then was back in.
