Oh Mary Tour

it seems like it is plugging into the calendar wherever it can as a "last minute" addition to many of the venues 26-27 season

Oh Mary Tour

The initial press release mentioned engagements in a number of major touring cities (LA, Boston, DC, Chicago, SF, Philly) that haven't been formally announced with dates yet. I'd imagine these will be longer engagements, 2-6 weeks based on the city.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Kad said: "To lend some credence to the Jinkx idea: although there are only 4 stops with any kind of timing announced thus far, none of them fall over the November-December window in which she would usually be touring her annual holiday show with Ben Delacreme."

The tour has announced for Seattle the first week of November.

which is very fitting. because Jinkx and Dela are both from Seattle originally. so they could easily start the tour from there a few weeks after Jinkx does Oh Mary!

I would think that the awareness that this is such a big hit on Broadway would make this very desirable on the road.

Unfortunately, I do not think it is ta good property for the road 'barns'.  It is a very small show and will get swallowed up in most of the standard road theatres, which could hurt its reputation.  I just picture this in the Straz Theatre in Tampa, for example, and don't see it working.  I wonder whether they would be better off targeting cities with theatres that do not seat 2,500 people or more.  Point of reference: would this have been a hit if it opened at the Gershwin...the intimacy of the Lyceum (even the second balcony) is a contributor to enjoyment of this show.

I have said the same things about recent smaller musicals that have toured, e.g., The Band's Visit, Kimberly Akimbo, Fun Home, and they either were or felt considerably bigger than Oh! Mary!

I have not heard any casting on this, but like others, I do think Jinkx Monsoon would be a good fit for this. She has a major profile, is used to touring life, and has been willing to return to the show. If they can't get her, slotting in another Drag Race star like Bianca Del Rio or Ginger Minj would give it some star power and the requisite zany energy. Those girls all tour regularly with their own drag shows so it might take less convincing than other stars.

It would be nice to see Hannah take this on full time, maybe with some Cole swap outs for LA, etc., but I also want to see what she does next. May be too much "Mary" for her to make the role her next career step fulltime. But it seems like a logical choice outside of someone like Jinx.

Considering everything that's happening in this country, mainly caused by the rapist felon president, I think it's important the tour have Mary played by a drag performer.

I think I've seen that Hannah has been doing some readings/workshops for potential upcoming shows. If i were her, I'd hold onto this gig for as long as I possibly can. She's fantastic in it!

The four venues they've announced so far are in the 2,500 range. I would compare this to something like the Into the Woods tour from a few years ago, longish stops in smaller venues in bigger cities. You have a better chance at enticing a name if they aren't constantly traveling and as you said it works out in the shows favor because they work better in a smaller house.

2500 still sounds like way too big a theatre for this show. But then I personally find most touring venues too big.

Local press being such a big part of a touring play’s ad plan, seems like they need a star with some name value. Like a 90s/2000s SNL lady who hasn’t done much lately. A Cheri Oteri type.

"

Are you saying you believe Mary needs to be played by a drag artist? Or by a male/AMAB actor? Because Jinkx is the only person who's played Mary to date who actually comes from a drag performance background, so setting that as a standard you expect is somewhat odd.

Although I would hesitate to call Cole Escola a drag queen, per se, so much of their work has been based on playing female characters.

Both Cole and the late Divine consider/considered their work as actors not drag performances. They were playing characters that were women not men dressed as women. Divine played his female roles as real women and Cole plays their roles also as real women.

Sorry, I meant male/amab actor.

Off topicish: Catherine Tate has been cast as a West End Oh Mary, would love to see her do this.

AMEX presale for the Los Angeles run started this morning, and CTG's website was down for over an hour. They had a queue to enter the site, and you'd get through the queue and then the site would just display a huge error message. Looks like this run will do well, hoping we get some fun casting.

We should hear about casting soon.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I was VERY impressed how CTGLA handled subscriber pre-sale for Oh, Mary to buy additional tickets. They gave plenty of reminders via email, and offered discounts for all seats for subscribers. They emailed many reminders warning that the clock was ticking until general pre-sale and once pre-sale starts it would be harder.
