Does anyone know if they are doing the full show with no edits or censorship?

Posted: 1/17/19 at 1:28pmI mean, it's airing on network TV. So of course it will be censored/sanitized for network TV. There will be no nudity, profanity, etc. Also, they have a runtime limits based on the fact that TV airing (with commercials) will only be 3 hours long, so one would imagine there will be at least some minor cuts also for length.

My feeling about that is...then why do it. Yeah, it's a great platform for the estate, I guess. It stays in the public eye, but I'd rather them bleep out a word or two then edit it. The lyrics are so important to who these characters are.

I'd expect about 45-50 minutes of commercials throughout. Since RENT is roughly 2 1/2 hours, I expect some content will be cut. In my opinion, if they have to edit content deemed inappropriate (including language), then they shouldn't do it. RENT's Broadway production is available on DVD, so at least the full show is preserved. If anything, this will still probably be better than the movie.

Definitely going to be edited
For example, based on the La Vie Boheme video it seems dildos was changed to latex.

I mean if an entire musical is derailed because you replace a few sh*ts and f*cks with milder expletives, then there's something wrong with it. Revivals and restagings of plays and musicals happen often with slight tweaks and cuts here and there, that is the nature of restaging any property.
Why do it? I mean, let's not kid ourselves, it's for money. The success of previous televised live musicals have made these types of events solid event marketing opportunities.

Depends on the context and depends on the show. Spring awakening is not the same without curse words. I would say the same is true of some parts of Rent.
Sure, swap out "she cheated! F**king cheated!" And it doesn't really matter.
Meanwhile La Vie Boheme is thr characters being deliberately outragious and provocative, to shame Benny and his prissy dinner companions for their sensibilities. To then ajust it to sooth the sensibilities of the audience is... a remarkable level of irony.
On the other hand, just watched the new video of the cast in their costumes and was quite happy. It was very clearly Rent and very clearly the characters without being a carbon copy. So thumbs up for the costume design at least

It's at 8pm on Fox, it will be very sanitized and edited, therefore, not worth watching.

We should just be happy that Live musicals are even happening each year. It allows exposure to those that might never get the chance to see the show or introduce those to musical theater. As long as the essence of the show is there, we should be happy people will get to see a great show.

The only thing that they'd have to take out is any swearing. The movie version wasn't 'R' so I doubt much will be cut. If they said it was going to be a 2 hour version, I would be worried. Let's watch first and then complain.

I do hope there's a rethinking of the staging. In the original show there was a lot of marching-to-the-front-and-forming-a-line-and-singing-at-the-audience stuff that grew tiresome onstage and would be worse onscreen. I think the show is dated but it's still dynamic and the score is memorable so I'm looking forward to it.

If you think that swearing is the only thing they have to take out, you haven't seen the show in a very long time. And I won't be complaining at all about the actual event, I won't be watching. Rent: Live on Broadway is perfect in every single way, no need to see a PG-13 clean version. It's a three hour broadcast with commercials about every 7 minutes, so it won't be the actual length of the musical.
Oh, and the Chris Columbus movie was one of the worst movie musicals in modern history.

I wasn't aware that this was happening until I saw the tail end of a promo while watching the NFC Championship game, and so I checked out a cast list and have a question: does anybody else see Vanessa Hudgens as more of a Mimi than a Maureen?

^ There's a large thread about this and it talks about that a lot. Look it up and check it out.

In short, Digific, Vanessa did play Mimi in the Hollywood Bowl production. I too was surprised when she was announced as Maureen for this, and would love to learn more...so if anyone finds that thread, please share the link.

Funnily enough, I remember thinking at the time of the Hollywood Bowl production that Vanessa was a better fit for Maureen...

RENT was highly commercialized the minute it moved to the Nederlander.
