I do not see why so many people want this casting to happen. I just don’t see it. And while I always believe in giving people chances (like Al Roker in Waitress who was so good as Old Joe 😊) I just don’t see Lady Gaga being a fit for Fanny.
no thanks

My favorite answer to this question is one that would have changed history in a literal sense: Elvis Presley was offered Tony in the film of West Side Story but the Colonel declined it, considering it to be too highbrow. Elvis singing art music and dancing ballet would have hurt the highly commercial lowest common denominator niche Col. Parker has established with the “Elvis movies” at the time. If Elvis had taken the role, it likely would have broken him from the stranglehold of Parker’s management and encouraged him to live differently and take more risks. He might have lived a few more decades and been remembered as a lifetime achiever, not the Vegas but out of his twilight era.

I'm still not sure we'll never see this happen, but I still dream about Gaga as Eva Peron. I know it's a little too on-the-nose after years of being compared to Madonna, but come on—she's perfect for the role.
Gaga would also be flawless as Elphaba, but it sounds like she's not really in the running to be cast for the Wicked movie these days.

So many roles that Judy would have been phenomenal as. Think of how heartbreaking her “Send in the Clowns” could have been in A Little Night Music. Or the absolute fire she could have brought to “I’m Still Here.”

This isn't Broadway, but it just hit me the other day... she'd have been really great in the Helen Reddy part in Pete's Dragon. Make her Mickey Rooney's sister instead of his daughter. Could've been bigger than it was.

Yes, Gaga is talented.Phenomenal. But why is everyone so convinced she could handle some of these roles, especially one as iconic as Elphaba? What has everyone so convinced?

A huge portion of the posters in this thread did not read the original post closely enough, unless there have been a ton of very recent tragedies I haven't heard about.
Since a lot of people are mentioning Hello Dolly, it occurred to me that Roger Rees would've been a great Horace.
EDIT: Jessica Walter as Joanne in Company!

To answer the actual question I'd love to have seen Vanessa Williams as a Queenie replacement if The Wild Party had run longer.

And then other people mentioned performers who are still with us, so I thought it’d be okay to comment on those. What’s with the snark? Geez.

It was only meant to be light snark, and not directed solely at you. It's no big deal, I was just poking fun at the way the thread derailed from its original intention. But I apologize that it came across as overly harsh.

Some great suggestions here but the original question was about people who passed away.

I cry for this not happening. I can’t think of better replacement casting because his personality fits the character so well. In its own way, it’s like a slightly different Emcee (which probably factors into why I loved MCH so much in the role
