Broadway: So, we heard you love heterosexual men in dresses for a laugh.

I am excited because of the more classic, wholesome style from Casey--and I do like the movie a lot. However, I can see how this may seem a little out of touch.

It's definitely a strong team attached to the project.  Considering the Tootsie "backlash", I'm surprised they're moving forward with it, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

This is weird and also confusing. "Sugar", the 1972 musical version of "Some Like It Hot" was renamed "Some Like It Hot" ages ago. So now there are two musicals with the same title based on the same story. Was the world really clamoring for another musical version?

What's next? A new musical version of "The Apartment"?

"The First Wives Club" and "The Cher Show" do not count as drag queen musical premieres in Chicago.  I think that "Sugar" would be the definitive version of "Some Like it Hot".  What will the new writers/lyricists bring to this show that the original people didn't?

I think they meant Tootsie and Kinky Boots.

"Sugar" has one of the great unknown Jule Styne scores, and while it needs some streamlining in the book, and a couple more big numbers, I don't understand why anyone would think to start over with this property.  And especially not Shaiman, who is so inferior to Styne's worst scores.

There are so many clever lyrics and melodies. It will become schtick instead of charm with this team. So disappointing.

I meant Kinky Boots (2012) and Tootsie (2018). Though, Victor/Victoria (1995) could be argued as one as well.

I was in the cast of 54 SINGS SUGAR back in 2017, with Tony Roberts as a special guest...the evening was sold out and the audience ate it up. Granted, it was more a concert than a fully staged production, but I don't see why the original musical can't benefit from an Encores! or York Mufti treatment.

This could end up like Phantom, where one adaptation is a global phenomenon and the other fades into the "hidden gems" realm of the theatre canon.

Neither of those options seems likely for this project if it ends up being anything like their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which borrowed songs from the previous musical adaptation and still wasn't any good.

Saw the original with Morse/Roberts.Killer cast but the score was sub par Styne/Merrill with the exception of a few numbers

Will.probably not see this one but will.listen to the score to see if it improves on the original

I am glad that you thought that, Mr. Roxy, because I was keeping my mouth shut, since I have found myself a little too cdismissive of some old chestnuts lately.  I remember little about this show, other than the fact that I was very disappointed by the score, since (at the time) Gypsy, Funny Girl and Bells are Ringing were among my favorite scores.  FG and Bells are not as high on the list anymore (I guess I think that both are about 2/3 of a great score), but Gypsy certainly is.

I remember it being very labored, with a lot of the laughter forced.  I remember thinking that Anthony Roberts was totally miscast in this one (think Tony Curtis impersonating Cary Grant, and substitute  Roberts into that equation...).

I am not sure that the movie needs another musical remake, but I would not use Sugar as an argument that one should not be attempted.

Gower Champion fixed many of the show's issues in Los Angeles and that production was terrific - Morse, Larry Kert, and Gale Gordon subbing for Ritchard, who had a heart attack prior to the opening.  And Leland Palmer as Sugar.  Huge laughs, and no one is ever going to tell me MUSIC is subpar - it's fantastic - some of the lyrics are a little, well, sketchy, but the music is classic Styne all the way.  That production had at least one cut song put back in for Sugar (Nice Ways) and it just all worked really well.  For me, Mr. Nicholaw's shows are machines and I'm tired of their relentlessness, frankly.  As to what the new writers will bring to this that Mr. Wilder, I.A.L. Diamond, and Peter Stone didn't, well...  As to the composer/lyricist, we'll have to see/hear.
