I was also at dress on Saturday night and haven't got a chance sit down and write something until now! Without saying too much out of respect for it being a dress...I think the show is hysterical and so incredibly well crafted, all of the jokes fall exactly where they should. Although all of the performances are incredible I think Brad Oscar stood out to me the most as the crazy soothsayer, hopefully he will get recognized come Tony time! Brooks as the puritan crazy father was also another highlight! I can't wait to hear what people think of the first performance tonight! This isn't really a spoiler since it is in the press video, I have had the line "don't be a penis, the man is a genius" stuck in my head since Saturday night now! I'll end my thoughts with thank god for original musicals and for the genius of Casey Nicholaw!
i was at the invited dress as well. can't stop thinking about this show. i thought it was brilliant and absolutely hilarious. i plan on seeing it again in previews and after opening. i keep telling people they need to buy tickets now because i feel like they'll be hard to come by! i smell a big fat hit.
Does anyone think they will extend the discount offers, or should I just suck it up and try to go within the current window? I have a feeling they might not?
Had a conversation with someone Saturday who said this show's backlash was brief but intense (even in the biz) based on a rather facile misconception: that it "kicked" SIDE SHOW out of the St. James. Of course, even if that were true, it has zip to do with the quality of this piece, its potential, and the audience reception. The paying public has no concept of fighting over theaters, and SIDE SHOW left Broadway because it didn't sell well enough. But a whiff of that hangs over this, at least around the perimeter of these boards, and it will likely ebb as soon as this is up and running. Because the show arrived sans try-out, some people smell over confidence bordering on hubris. Though this kind of piece isn't my taste, I actually suspect the show must be in great shape to eschew a shake-down. People seldom toss money around unless they see evidence that the risk-taking is measured. And to those still troubled: remember the word of mouth on SEUSSICAL? It had some of the very best post workshop (that "made grown men cry" vibe). And it landed with a soft thud. That's B'way, as unpredictable as ever. May this show flourish and be the hit the season needs.

I honestly feel like this show's only huge competition is Fun Home. I've heard great things about American In Paris as well, but I haven't seen it yet so can't speak. Fun Home is an important show that needs to be seen by a wider audience- I was moved by it at The Public, will be interested to hear how previews go this week. This could very well be a year similar to Billy Elliot & Next to Normal.
Going off someone’s earlier question about the style of humor of the show (now that it seems this might be a hot ticket that I should get in advance – which, in turn, means paying full price – I want to be sure I definitely want to see it before making the purchase), does it fall more toward the “Drowsy” style of humor or the “Gentleman’s Guide” style?
Also, how is the score? I would love to hear more about it.
GilmoreGirl, without going into great detail since it isn't the first preview yet, the best way to describe the show would be not even one of those styles more "Spamalot" actually. The score is a riot-definitely pays tribute to old Broadway while adding a contemporary feel. There is a number in the first act that literally make fun of popular Broadway shows, got a mid show standing ovation! I can't get the score out of my head!
Well I just scored some rear mezz tickets for Friday's performance for $37 each. Will someone please tell me the sights from the rear mezz. The balcony is not being sold, do you think if this is a smash hit, they will sell those balcony seats?
Also I plan on bringing my 22 year old son with me. He is not an avid musical theater fan but does like some...his favs were BOM, Spelling Bee, Avenue Q, Matilda and a few others.....is this for him?
Yes, I think you should take him. (I saw early versions of the show plus the press event.)
This show casts a wide net and likely had wide appeal. Going this week and cannot wait! I actually couldn't get the seats I wanted most (front center mezz).
Yes, basically. I think that SR held a lottery for this as well.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
@BrerBear- A bunch of us on here won tickets through the #TeamRotten contest online, but it was mostly invited friends and family of the cast, crew, and creatives. I was in line behind a bunch of the original first national tour cast of Book of Mormon, noticed faces from Elf and a couple of Casey's other shows, and a bunch of other recognizable theater performers.
This is reportedly a 14 million dollar show. Someone must have a lot of faith in it for that kind of support. I look forward to all the legit views that will follow, while understanding that this is a first preview and will accordingly it a lot of slack. P.S. The title is very witty.
The big song where Noatradamus predicted a "musical" blew through the roof!! It got standing ovation!! Shakespeare as a rock star was clever idea. Lots of references to other musicals, which are pretty entertaining to audience.
Audience seems really like it so far. I could hear people praised it left and right. Indeed I think it was pretty well-crafted, and it would be popular with theater-goers. Costumes were amazing and dance sequences were very tight. Hard to believe it was first night!!
My little nitpick, if I may, is that it has little too many double entendre jokes for my taste, but audience seemed to laugh at those, so what do I know?
The opening number was beautiful but the first act number about musicals is priceless. Even if I missed a reference or two, I still loved it. So far, it's very entertaining, although I'm curious how it plays to casual audiences.
