I saw this musical recently at the fifth avenue theatre in Seattle. I happen to love the score and the story, but I’m sad to say, this musical doesn’t hit anymore. It’s outdated and irrelevant now that we’re living in a world with parents letting the kids have sex in the house. A musical and play that was once daring and shocking is now cooked because society has progressed this show out of relevance. Sad and good
A story that takes place in the 1890s is, by definition, outdated. I saw the west end revival last year (or year before) and thought it hit just as hard as ever.
The whole show is this tension between the kids and the adults. Being out in the (liberal) suburbs, all I see are parents letting their kids do what they want. But maybe that says more about what I see than you.

I hate feeding the troll, but you’re posting a remarkably dunderheaded opinion framed through the lens of your personal experiences.
Glad your suburb is liberal (whatever that means these days). Many areas are not. Hell, there are places that would (and have) outright ban this musical because of its content.

"letting"? Teenagers have found ways to have sex since.... ALWAYS.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

What under God's mighty sun are you talking about? Roe was overturned, does that mean nothing to you? All of these book bans in schools? Health education being heavily restricted? Young people have always and will always have sex, whether they're given tools to navigate that in a healthy way and understand what is happening to them. We are living through a terrifying period of extreme conservative backlash to the progress made in the 20th century, the show is more relevant than it was in 2006.
What these states are doing do not reflect the will of the people, and they don’t reflect everyday American life. And spring awakening is not a show about abortion. It is about the consequences of trying to control kids and hiding information from them. That is a topic I don’t think resonates with most Americans today for the reasons I gave, and it certainly didn’t with the young people in the theater.
Which her mother forced her to get. If that happened today, I think most parents would make sure their kid got what they needed. A small group of Christian conservatives have hijacked the government which does not reflect the views of the vast majority of Americans. How many gop politicians have we seen getting their mistresses abortions
The bald-faced ignorance of this comment is absolutely staggering. Real people are absolutely suffering and in some cases dying because of what's happening. Over a fifth of people seeking an abortion have had to leave their state, which is absolutely not feasible for everyone. The country slamming the gas in reverse isn't relevant because our lawmakers are hypocrites and don't represent everyone? Do you think conservatives weren't like that before? You think there weren't areas of permissiveness in America before Zoomers (who are actually having less sex than previous generations, if studies are to be believed) were being raised? This whole take is only possible if you believe the world has no context or history.
Which parents? People with liberally-minded parenting styles? Then sure. (Well, maybe. Some wild 70s parents probably have them beat.) That certainly isn't everyone. The more seismic shift in information access is the internet, though without actual communicative and honest parenting involved, this too is something that can actually rhyme with the events of the show.
Broadway Flash said: "Do you agree with me that parents today are much more liberal with their kids than ever before?"
What does that have to do with the show? Yes the songs are contemporary to bridge the hundred year Gap between teenagers of the late 1800s and modern teenagers but the story itself a 100-year-old story is time specific. The attitudes and repressions are times specific. Especially when you indulge in the theory that these young German kids grew up to be the Nazis.
I have siblings/cousins in and just out of high school, in a fairly progressive suburb of Chicago. The idea that parents are just openly letting their kids have sex in the home (whatever that means) any more than they have in the past is utterly divorced from reality.
MODS! PLEASE DELETE THIS THREAD!!!!!!!! As for you Flash, Please, for the love of god! STOP!!!!! The Spring Awakening thread is probably the stupidest thread you've created since your whole Bad Cinderella PRAISE last year! GO AWAY!
The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince
