I thought people were overestimating Illinoise.... Some nominators surely had a hard time considering it a musical I would imagine.
Lempicka did better than I thought.
I thought Merrily would be a juggernaut and get a bunch of design category noms too but that didn't happen.
I was pretty sure Best Musical wasn't happening for Days of Wine and Roses but I'm shocked it didn't get an Orchestrations nom.
So completely shut out were: The Wiz, Harmony, Heart of Rock and Roll, How to Dance in Ohio, The Shark is Broken, The Cottage, I Need That. Anything else?

I agree. I especially am concerned with the lack of a Best Director nomination - I can't imagine many shows have won Best Musical without getting at least a nomination for its director. However, the nominators might have thought (right or wrong) that the bulk of Peck's work was the choreography and that his nomination there (and likely win) was sufficient. And in general I suspect a lot of folks don't know quite what to do with this sublime but offbeat show, which could break either way in the end.

Hell's Kitchen leading the musical noms is so disappointing, one of my least favorite shows this season/ever. Really don't understand how Here Lies Love didn't make it's way into musical. Sad about Conrad as well.
So happy for Nikki M James, Stereophonic and Jaja's though! The plays were where it was at this season!

Hey, should I have that medical team I have on call for that “Heart attack” stand down? I still don’t see the promised nominations for Casey Likes and Jeremy Jordan. Hahahahaha.

How did Cabaret get so many nominations when the show seems to be such a misfire?"
The show was a misfire for most critics, but that is an entirely different set of people from the nominating committee, which then expands to the much larger voting body. It still has a decent chance at many of its nominations.
I’m sad for the eternally overlooked Chip Zien and wish we saw more love for Illinoise among other shows.
But I’m beyond ecstatic about Stereophonic’s performance. I was so close to including Tom Pecinka. Glad to see viewers saw past an unlikable character and recognized a great performance.
Cabaret was always going to do well in nominations, thanks to its technical aspects and the quality of the show itself. I don’t think it’ll be winning very much, though.

Every single person I know who saw Cabaret in the West End loved it. I think the reception to it reminds me a lot of the year Matilda came to Broadway - critics (Ben Brantley aside, oddly) didn't like it but it almost felt like it was this "this was popular on the West End and we are BROADWAY" chip on everyone's shoulder and it wasn't liked just because it was a hit over there. I could be wrong but that's the vibe I get with Cabaret.
I think it's probably a decent show that people in NYC *want* to be snobby about.
I think it's a great set of nominations. That featured actress in a musical category is incredible. What I am very surprised at is all of the love for Water for Elephants. It was by far one of the weakest musicals of the season for me and for it to be nominated for Best Musical and a slew of others was not on my radar.

Who the heck is gonna win Featured Actor in a Play? Corey Stoll? Will Keen was the most common prediction I had seen before today, but, well...

In all honesty, that show should have at least gotten best choreo. and sound design nominations.
I really hope Will Butler wins Best Score
Surprised Illinoise didn’t get direction as well.
Women are totally owning it in the direction categories this year! Seven out of ten nominations? Great showing and all well deserved.
Thrilled with the love for THE OUTSIDERS--my fave of a middling season. ILLINOISE may have a struggle at the Box office even with the Best Musical and Choreography noms. An ambitious dansical for sure-- the nominating committee couldn't get past anointing it as a fully-fledged Broadway musical.

I’d have to think the frontrunner for Best Musical is The Outsiders.

Eli Gelb or Will Brill would be my pick.

Brill or Gelb. Brill’s the showier part but Gelb is the heartbeat of the show.
