to be clear, i welcome ALL the criticism of Ragtime, and very much understand the argument for CATS in terms of the act of reviving. im responding only to those complaining about Ragtime like it is some major mistake by the Tony folks or referencing the whiny white people involved (as characters, even worse).
meanwhile, a beautiful speech by the ever worthy Caissie Levy.

The only new musical offerings I found remotely interesting this season is Two Strangers. I saw Pippin at Signature Theater in Arlington a few days ago, and thought it was leagues better than most of the musicals I saw on Broadway this season. Thank goodness the plays have been strong.

come fall, this production will be gone and soon forgotten. But years from now, much like Sunset Boulevard last year, people will remember what Catsdid to elevate the original material."
RAGTIME will be announcing an extension soon, likely until the end of the year with a new cast. So shut up!

It's definitely a MAJOR mistake - and said from a lover of the musical but not this production. It was a mistake this one won - ESPECIALLY over the artistic, creative, resonant and brilliant NEW CATS. A production like this Ragtime will be seen again. This CATS, no. Embarrassing for the Tonys - history will not be kind to this win.

Lorne Michaels clearly bought his Tonys to try and get a 3rd season of this over-the-top musical.

I enjoyed Schmigadoon though I have no idea who this woman speaking after Lorne Michaels is and it feels like a pretty weak finish to a weak season, though I'm not sure what other show really deserved it more aside from Two Strangers (which goes home emptyhanded? That seems wrong).
Only six minutes over. Bring back PINK next year.

I'm disgusted. Honestly, if the big check is all that it takes for Tony voters to fold and pick the mediocre ****e like Schmigadoon, then maybe Broadway deserves to collapse. I suppose people will keep paying when A list celebs are cast in acclaimed play revivals, but the new Broadway musical is dead. What a damn shame.

Interesting Levy left The Lost Boys to stay with Ragtime and then both roles ended up winning tonight.

I was only able to visit NYC once briefly this season, and saw Becky Shaw, Fallen Angels and Chess. But man none of these musical numbers are selling me on their shows. They come across as amateurish and without any kind of introduction, lacking in context. My mom texted to say that the “Schmigadoon” number sounded like “Oklahoma”(!). She had no idea it was a spoof / homage.
I guess it was a strong year for plays and weak for musicals. I am surprised at the lack of nomination for CHESS revival now that I have seen it.
And why salute CHORUS LINE and not feature original cast? Ziegler sounded awful in a song we have all heard in countless covers.
Pink was a fun host and seemed up for anything. let down by some lame bits (DuBose notes, Criss stunt, free speech gag).

Well that was, overall, a wonderful evening. I have been celebrating a milestone birthday and this was the best gift! Since it is only 9:00 here and I have a few days off, going to float out the door and have a cocktail!
Once again it was fun taking part in the yearly Tony Awards Telecast thread!

Actually, next year will have Paddington, Benjamin Button, and maybe Mexodus so the Broadway musical isn't dead. You're just having a tween tantrum because you have no taste.
