Safe for a delicate pious Mormon who swears like a garbage man when there are no cameras around.
^wonder how he responded to the tea party joke
I love the Michelle went to PORGY.
Very classy night out.
And that she showed up unannounced and didn't make a big deal. I think that's better. Otherwise, she's the show, and the audience is distracted.
I find the criticism of taking Sasha and Malia to see African-American performers starring on Broadway extremely irritating.
The last time they were here, Mrs. Obama took them to see Addams Family, Memphis and Blue Man Group.
Is there also something wrong with taking them to see blue-skinned people onstage?
Wow - Romney did not see "Book Of Mormon" - lol
Another thread ruined by utter nonsense.
I wish the President would go see The Normal Heart in DC. It's an important play and would confirm his professed stance on equality issues. (I don't say same-sex or 'gay' issues because if we continue to separate, there will be no equality ever.)
They should see what shows they want to see. A night at the theatre does not have to be used as support for a political platform or as confirmation of a social stance. Updated On: 7/15/12 at 10:19 AM

They do not just show up randomly at theatres. These trips are planned in advance with security, Secret Service etc. visiting the theatre days before the actual visit to scope out the location of exits, entrances, seats, and other random vantage points. It is a well planned affair with no stone left unturned.
And I do not find it odd that the majority of their theatre trips have been to black shows. Nor do I really give a damn what shows those people choose to go to. And I am sure the producers of STREETCAR made overtures left and right to get those behinds in seats at the Broadhurst. They still have 1 more week.
Spike is totally correct. It is a well oiled and seamless affair when they are in town. I work in the hotel where there are staying and aside from the presence of gorgeous Secret Service detail skulking about here and there, you would never know they are staying here.

They can correct me if I'm wrong, but I assumed by "randomly" it meant not announced ahead of time to the audience in order to turn it into any sort of appearance or political event.

^ AEA, yeah, that's how I took it as well...thought that was pretty clear. Obviously they have it planned and security precautions and all that happen, but they don't make a big publicity spectacle of it.
I'll bite... so since when exactly was Sister Act a "black" show?
If your logic is correct, it must REALLY suck to be an Asian-theatre goer.
Almost as much as it sucks to be an Asian actor!
Yes, obviously by randomly I meant what AEA said. I didn't mean to indicate that they just decided on Saturday morning to see a show that night.

Ever hear of Chinglish? Duh.
You mean they didn't just stroll up to the TKTS line before dinner to see what was available?
I heard that Michelle was asking people if she could have a free ticket outside of the theatre.
Huh. I guess Book of Mormon was sold out.

Of course they didn't. They did rush.
Wynbish - Great post, they should be able to have evening of entertainment not having to make a political statement.

"Huh. I guess Book of Mormon was sold out."
They wouldn't see that, anyway. It's only half-black.

Assasins is almost always cast with all white people, so I would imagine that that would sent the whiteright message.
Tea Party folks are going to use this to show how frivolous the Obama's are--spending our money on overpriced B'way tickets.
Oy.
Good for them. I'm a big fan of both the President and the First Lady.
