I am overjoyed Fun Home took Best Musical! Brave and brilliant piece of theatre- insanely deserved.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
considering the small theater it plays in, FUN HOME will be a very hard ticket to get for a while now.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
As I said in a thread a few weeks ago, I don't get to New York nearly as much as I used to, but I do still follow these things and this year, I was lucky enough to see On The Town, and Fun Home. I saw the latter only because an American in Paris was nearly sold out. I'm so glad it was. Walking out of FH, I didn't quite know what to make of it (I went in knowing next to nothing)but I knew I had just seen something special. I'm grateful that the Tony voters voted their hearts and not their wallets. Actually with the exception of featured actress in a musical, which I would've been very happy going to either Judy or Sydney, I am very happy with the way everything turned out. I plan on seeing the King and I for my birthday and hope to bask in the glory that is Kelli O'Hara.
Speaking of Gigi, I've had enough champagne, and it's time for bed!
Overall I really enjoyed this years show. Only disappoint for me was hand to God not winning anything and no live appearance from tyrone which I thought would have made a great segment.
Well, even though most of my picks in the key categories failed to win, I thought it was a great night at the Tonys. My only real quibble is with Sam Gold winning best direction for his tiny chamber musical with 9 actors in a relatively simple stage space. My heart was always with Christopher Wheeldon's mega-show on a vast canvas that was AN AMERICAN IN PARIS.
Still, hurrah for the season of 2014-15! Now stand back and make way for the year of HAMILTON.
The whole show seemed stale and dated to me. I half expected Ed Sullivan to walk out and introduce the next act. And the featured musical numbers certainly didn't make me want to run out and buy a ticket to any of the shows. Ironically, the two performances I enjoyed the most were from Neverland and It Should've Been You. Otherwise...one big yawn.
3 hours of great entertainment. Kristen and Alan were perfect hosts- relaxed, self effacing and having fun. Most of the numbers came off very well due to the great direction and camera work. Amazing how many social issues were hit upon tonight with out bashing them over your head. Broadway is all about love and art and humanity and I thought that tonight's telecast reflected life in show business in spades.
That said, I don't think those particular shows needed the help but it might help them run even longer in addition to selling well. As for spreading the love around, I wonder if the Something Rotten PR will be able to spin Christian Borle's win in to anything. No love for The Visit. And of course this doesn't even consider the shows not nominated (not that it matters at this point for most of them).
Really Luscious? That 11 year old girl SLAYING THE AUDIENCE WITH HER NUMBER on the Radio City Tony Stage that has previously defeated the likes of Idina Menzel didn't move you at all?
