I want to see Paris Hilton in "The Apple Tree"! Love the avatar ratherbewhaling. Haha.
-Love Spring Awakening and think the tour cast is amazing -Love Wicked -Love anything Sondheim and anything Disney (except Aida and HSM, which don't even count) -Love Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph... dream coat-- hate anything else ALW -Loved Chitty Chitty Bang Bang -Love Karen Olivo in WSS and think she can dance better than any of the soggy old queens who criticize her -Love every aspect of the WSS revival (except Tony and Riff) -Love Patti, but a little bit goes a long way -Liked the new A Chorus Line recording better than the original -Drowsy Chaperone should've beaten Jersey Boys for Best Musical -[title of show] needs and deserves a full-tilt-boogy "revival"
"These rabid fans...possess the acting talent to portray the hooker...Linda Eder..." -The New York Times
I love Cats. I love Joseph...Deamcoat. I hate everything else ALW. I think Patti LuPone is overrated. I love Seven Brides For Seven Brothers...the movie. I think Idina Menzel sounds like a dying cat. I love the music of Spring Awakening, but I think the show itself is absolutely boring.
Liked the new A Chorus Line recording better than the original Thinks Karen Olivio is AMAZING in everything she does Thinks the current RENT tour cast is the best cast
skb2010: I honestly don't like Ethel Merman's voice. It doesn't float my boat.
When I read the title of this thread that is exactly what i was going to say!! I have tried to listen to her stuff but i just dont see what the big deal is....
Spring Awakening 7.3.07!!, Wicked/ Rent 7.5.07!!, Legally Blonde 7.6.07!! The Color Purple 7.7.07!!, Gypsy 8.19.08!!, In the Heights/Wicked 8.20.08!!, The Little Mermaid 8.21.08!! Legally Blonde Tour 11.9.08!! Shrek 7.7.09!!, Blithe Spririt 7.8.09!!, 9 to 5 7.9.09!!, Next to Normal 7.10.09!!
I loved Rent Remixed and had no problem with the changes made to the characters.
I also enjoyed the film version of Rent.
I love just about every show that's looked down upon on these boards (Cats, Starlight Express, The Wedding Singer, Legally Blonde, The Little Mermaid, etc).
Spring Awakening left me cold.
I don't really like Colm Wilkinson's voice. Updated On: 4/4/09 at 02:14 PM
I'm a teenager and think Spring Awakening is really overrated.
I loved the movie version of RENT. I love Legally Blonde.
I like the new cast recording of ACL better than the original. I don't care how talented she is, but Patti Lupone needs to get over herself, big time.
I think Phantom has a beautiful score. I think West Side Story is THE best musical ever written, not ONE of them.
I'm a professional. Whenever something goes wrong on stage, I know how to handle it so no one ever remembers. I flash my %#$&.
"Jayne just sat there while Gina flailed around the stage like an idiot."
-I don't like Jerry Herman, and Kander and Ebb -There's nothing wrong with a show that is pure fluff on Broadway. I don't like Mamma Mia, but... -Chicago on stage is boring -Patti does nothing for me. -The WSS revival is not as bad as many of the people on here make it out to be. There are some very good things about it. -Karen Ziemba and DHP were the ONLY redeeming factors of Curtains. -Spectacle is a theatrical necessity. -Brokeback Mountain was a snore -Mandy Patinkin is one of the most annoying performers. -Amplification is necessary for Broadway shows nowadays.
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert
-I think title of show should be revived -hated Curtains -Ethel Merman's voice annoys me a lot -Spamalot wasnt that funny to me (and I enjoyed the movies) -WSS revival isnt bad, its good, but just not as good as Hair -I enjoy Cats -not a fan of Oklahoma!
-I know this isn't broadway, but I don't like shrimp-
Rent is FANTASTIC brilliant theatre, and beyond deserving of its pulitzer.
I really don't like a lot of the older musicals like Annie Get Your Gun, Oklahoma, Kiss me Kate, Carousel, Sound of Music ect...
The score of next to normal is half good- half third rate rock music
I think Lestat has a treasure of a score and is deserving of a revised revival on Broadway
"There's nothing good on. The media hates Christmas. The media loves vampires, though. Maybe they will show a Twilight Christmas." -Danmeg's 10 year old son.
I too loved the Rent movie (maybe it isn't such an unpopular opinion after all...)
I didn't enjoy the Lion King (musical, not movie)
The only thing I like about West Side Story is the music
I'm not a fan of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
I think Wicked deserved to win best musical over Avenue Q (though just barely, I love them both)
I also thought the DVD of Sunday in the Park with George was thoroughly boring
I loved the Phantom movie, and only had a problem with Raoul
"Rather than ignore those who choose to publish their opinions without actually talking to me, I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love."
-Neil Patrick Harris
I loved the Phantom movie, too. But I loved Patrick Wilson's Raoul. He was a bit of a pouncy-boots (okay, the ultimate pouncy-boots), but I think that would be fairly realistic for a privileged young French aristocrat-- and he also displayed a good deal of courage and love for Christine.
Now, Gerry Butler's voice was disgusting, but I actually liked his acting. And the managers were perfection. I thought visually the film worked very well at translating the story from stage to screen.
In my pants, she has burst like the music of angels, the light of the sun! --Marius Pantsmercy
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I loved THE PIRATE QUEEN and saw it a dozen times.
I think Patti LuPone is the most overrated performer alive and her singing in EVITA should be studied due to how horrendous it is.
I too, loved IMPRESSIONISM. I've seen it 4 times and think it's a beautiful show.
I think a big portion of "theater geeks" ages 12-20 are the single most annoying creature ever created. The ones latch on to every show and "make it theirs" and the ones I have to stand in line listening talk about the current state of musical theater and history of it and only reference Alice Ripley, Idina Menzel, Gavin Creel (all performers who are great) and throw in something about Sondheim to make them sound smarter than they know they are.
The revival of THREEPENNY OPERA was genius and so inspired. I feel bad for everyone involved they were robbed of the attention they deserved.
Speaking of the above, I feel that most theater people are complete lemmings when it comes to what they like and don't like and this has a serious effect on how shows are seen/remembered. I know for a fact some people on here bash certain shows but, how many times have I seen you guys at them saying how much you love them? In an attempt to be cool and to be heard, a lot of people will say pretty much anything to be "accepted".
THE PRODUCERS was an unfunny piece of sh*t.
The only version of "Send in the Clowns" I really enjoy is Streisands.
I think Daphne Rubin Vega is amazing and will see anything she does and I believe that (as I said before) she was very unfairly judged in LES MISERABLES, just because she wasn't the "norm".
I think color blind casting is, in most cases, a ridiculous idea that only serves to detract from the show. While it would be great to see Audra play anything, it would also be great to see the following -
Marin Mazzie & Jason Daniely in PORGY & BESS Mary Testa as Ariel Leslie Kritzer as Mme. Armfeldt Kristin Chenoweth as Gaston and of course Patti LuPone as Shrek.
I think Bette Midler is the ultimate Mama Rose. I hardly doubt anyone will ever come close to capturing what she did and the fact it's on film is something I should get on my knees and thank God for daily.
Jordan I tottally agree about the 3PO revival!!! It was brilliant. I didnt get to see it live unfortunatly. It was between that and Lestat and Hugh Panaro is my favorite actor so I had to see it. But I have seen it by "other means" and found it genius. Cumming was great and Dale & Gasteyre stole that show. It should have been recorded and is a shame it wasnt.
Other recent developments and opinions: While I have always like Bright Lights Big City I find it brilliant and think it deserves to be staged more often and on Broadway.
In Evita after "The Money Kept Rolling In" the show is boring and frankly I shut the recording off after that song.
The Opposite of Sex was fun and I wish it had a longer life. Kerry Butler was wonderful. The opening number gets stuck in my head all the time.
I love both Ragtime and Parade. When asked which I think is better I pick Parade.
<------ Me and my friends with patti Lupone at my friends afterparty for her concert with audra mcdonald during the summer of 2007.
"I am sorry but it is an unjust world and virtue is only triumphant in theatricle performances" The Mikado
I didn't like In The Heights and could not understand one word Lin-Manuel sang/rapped. I just dont get the phenomenon.
Patti LuPone has let herself go. (Stand her next to Bernadette or Ebersole and see what I mean). Hot mess.
Grey Gardens should have won best musical hands down.
Christine Baranski was the weakest link in BOEING BOEING. Her understudy was much better than her.
I loved Kate Mulgrew in EQUUS.
I have no idea why Matt Cavanaugh works so much...lovely man, good actor, but is he really the best these shows can do?
"The sexual energy between the mother and son really concerns me!"-random woman behind me at Next to Normal
"I want to meet him after and bang him!"-random woman who exposed her breasts at Rock of Ages, referring to James Carpinello
Wicked was a very under underwhelming show for me. It was a huge disappointment.
"There's nothing good on. The media hates Christmas. The media loves vampires, though. Maybe they will show a Twilight Christmas." -Danmeg's 10 year old son.
